From the Principal, Mrs Anne Fry

Dear Parents and Carers

It was with great relief and pride that yesterday we farewelled the last of our HSC students - the graduating Class of 2021.  With a box of chocolates as their consolation, we bade their goodbye through a guard of honour at the conclusion of their final exam.  After all the delays and the changes to the format of the HSC exams for 2021, I can now breathe again knowing we did not have a single Covid disrupted exam - Alleluia!  I am immensely grateful to our Presiding Officer Mrs Michele Naughton, our Director of Teaching and Learning and the Diverse Learning Team, and all who made it possible to run our Covid-safe HSC.  A special mention of gratitude to Mr Ken Devlin, for setting up our Covid-safe check in every day and Mrs Viviane Schmitzer for conducting the screening of students in a warm, welcoming manner.

Today our attention turned to the graduating Class of 2027!  Our incoming Year 7 students came together to become familiar with the College, their new teachers and their new classmates.  They were joined by over 35 new students who will enter the College from Years 8-11. It was particularly good to meet our new Boarding students who always bring country spirit and attitude with them from all over New South Wales.  An enormous thank you to our Dean of Early Secondary Ms Sheenagh Doran, Mrs Robyn Pedley our Registrar, Mrs Elizabeth Brooks and the Heads of House for making their first day such a good day!

Our term (and year) finishes on Tuesday 7 December at 12.00pm midday.  All the students have been advised of our expectations and hopes for these two big days next week - our closing of the school year Mass and Speech Day.  I strongly encourage you to ensure your daughter attends both days as we bring celebration and closure to 2021.  At our final assembly on Wednesday, our new Student Leaders led us in a review of the year and hopefulness of the Advent season.  Our Year 7 students have led us thoughtfully into Advant with their beautiful nativity scenes each morning.  It has filled my spirit with hope and given me so much new energy, I feel like breaking into song..."So long, farewell...adieu adieu adieu"... (channeling my inner Julie Andrews from the Sound of Music).

Yours sincerely

Year 9 Boarding 2022

We have had several conversations with parents recently about the impact of the COVID pandemic on routines and positive study habits.  As a Boarding College, we have a unique opportunity to offer a Boarding experience to Year 9 students in 2022 - this could be for a term, a semester or a whole year.  The rationale behind this is to help re-establish good routines, supervised study and the chance to enhance the development of resilience and independence.  If you are interested in discussing this possibility for your daughter, please contact our wonderful Registrar, Mrs Robyn Pedley to arrange a time for a conversation.

From the Deputy Principal

What a day - what a week - what a year!

It was a thrill to welcome our 2022 new students to Orientation Day on campus today.  The high-spirited activities, new relationships being formed and the sharing of stories and hopes brings a new energy for all of us.  The welcome of new community members is a particular gift to schools - as we enjoy the opportunity to grow through new relationships.  Only the day before did we give a standing ovation to the last of our Class of 2021 HSC candidates as they exited the Dance theory exam.  And today our clapping was for the enthusiasm of so many students and families, not just Year 6 students, but those joining us in Years 8-11 who have placed their trust in St Vincent’s College.

Our College Assembly on Wednesday celebrated so much that has been achieved in our time back on site together.  It was wonderful to be led by our Year 12 Class of 2022 with the inclusion of every year group.   Our Boarders acknowledged the many lands upon which we respect the First Nations custodians of country - growing our awareness of the breadth of our College community.  Year 7 delighted us with Christmas nativity blessings, Year 8 opened our hearts to be people of service with the organisation of Christmas hampers, Years 9 and 10 students inspired us with their Vinnies Makes History projects and their particular reflections of Covid upon their own experience as adolescents in the city and country.  Our Sport Captains provided great tips to get healthy these holidays whilst our Social Justice Captains invited us to consider our opportunities to support our neighbours at Matthew Talbot Hostel.  We ended Assembly with an amazing compilation of the Friday Jazz Ensemble - each frame of a student dancing in her own home pieced together alongside the other, showing that we are amazing in our individual feats - but even better when we come together.

We look forward to our last two days of school next week.  Advent is the season for waiting with joyful anticipation that is rooted in faith.  With faith we have hope, hope in ourselves and hope in others.  Monday’s gathering to celebrate Eucharist reminds us of such goodness; a fitting way too ritualise the ending of 2021.  Tuesday will offer us the opportunity to commend all students’ efforts' and contributions this year whilst celebrating the particular achievements of students in all domains of learning at St Vincent’s - academic, sport, arts, service and leadership.  The planned year group assemblies offer students the opportunity to share in this commendation and reflection of the school year.  By the time our students depart us Tuesday lunchtime, I think they leave behind some very proud teachers who have supported the tenacity of our students this year.  I commend all students, staff and families for your contributions, hard work and trust.  May we all look to the renewal of Christmas with hopeful hearts.

Mrs Elizabeth Brooks
Deputy Principal

From the Director of Faith and Mission

We have one more Year 7 group to produce a live Nativity scene in Student Services on Monday morning.  The scene in Student Services has been way beyond expectation.   The costumes were surprising.  The things that can be achieved with a sheet and some positive thinking are amazing.  We have had some brilliant shepherds, very regal wise people, angels who raised all our spirits and held up the star at the same time, and the donkey has made a very agricultural contribution.  Well done, Year 7.  The live nativity scene is sure to be a tradition from now on.  Our singers carrolled, and it was joyous.  Maeve Collis and Lucy-Rose Doyle kicked off the Christmas sounds on Monday, Natalija Lambert recorded three beautiful carols for us for Tuesday, Ruby Waterlow-Heuston was stunning on Wednesday with some pretty average guitar backing from me, but Ruby was very encouraging.  On Thursday Mr Mitchell Grace and I did pretty well, we thought, with some traditional carols in parts, and today Maeve and Nicola got us all in the mood for Christmas dancing with some contemporary tunes.  My pets - a sheepdog and three wise hens - have been very well behaved all week, and seem to have enjoyed their minor roles in the Nativity.  Miett, the chicken, was a little vocal today, and did try to sing along with Ruby on Wednesday which gave us all the giggles.  It was fun and a little frantic but fabulous.

We have our Advent Mass on Monday morning.  Our Vinnies@SVC team will help demonstrate SVC generosity with hampers and 30 other students all have a role to play in making our Mass happen.  They are reading, singing, lighting candles, leading us in prayer and processing.  What an enthusiastic bunch.  Fr Ramesh Richards SJ our much loved friend, will preside.  There will be surprises, an Examen, a challenge and a great chance to come together to celebrate the achievements of the year, and imagine what is possible for us this Advent.

Blessings for the holidays and all that Christmas means for us.  It’s amazing, isn’t it.  Every year we celebrate our God, wanting to be with us, becoming one of us.

It’s a big thought.

Mrs Jo Kenderes
Director of Faith and Mission

From the English Department

In this last term of Year 10 in order to prepare students for Year 11 Preliminary HSC English we have studied the new form of writing for the HSC examination which is Discursive writing.  We have read and studied a wide range of texts from feature articles to personal essays.  Students were given the challenge to complete one in the style of a magazine article using mimesis from a recent article in 'Frankie' magazine.

I Hate All People - (the rundown)

Ella Rubenstein, Year 10 English

You're probably thinking after reading the title, “How can someone hate all people?” Well it seems stupid I know, but I'm going to provide you with evidence and I guarantee you will want to join my anti-human cult.  Yes I sound like The Grinch on Christmas Eve and I may be slightly dramatic, but I have my reasons - trust me.

The thing is, I’m not an introvert and I don’t really like being on my own - as weird as that may sound considering - but I have had enough of this species who walk around wearing overpriced fast fashion bought with their daddy's money, crying over minor inconveniences and thinking they run the food chain. News flash - they don’t - you don’t - we don’t.  The people who know me are probably dying to say ‘that’s rich coming from you’, and don’t get me wrong, I have been a sad victim of the Eastern Suburbs Gen-Z and sadly I still am.  You might be unlucky enough to find me roaming the streets of Bondi Beach in my Brandy Melville trackies and white air force one shoes, acting like I own the place.  Some might even call me (and I hate to admit it) - a ‘basic white bitch’ - and they would be right.

But it’s not just my generation that I despise, no, adults are even worse.  Who gave them the idea that just because they were born when iPhones were hanging on walls and season one of 'Shameless' wasn’t even out yet, that they know any better about how I should live my life.  This may root from my incapability to listen to authority but some mutual respect might help.  Maybe it’s something about the coffee breath and soup stench of old people that just doesn’t sit right with me.  You see, even the ‘role models’ in my life which we call parents aren’t always the best, all they seem to care about these days are the grades I get and if I’m home by my 10.30 curfew.  Like Steven, I don’t want to end up working 12 hour shifts 6 days a week in a shitty office job like you (excuse my language Mr George) just to end up with a bit of money, a mid-life crisis and seasonal depression - even if you were the smartest kid in your high school graduating class (which seems to be his only personality trait at this point).  But look, my rant isn’t about roasting the only people who actually care about me in life, I'm trying to prove why human beings just aren't trending right now.

Next we have babies.  Babies are cute and all and I would be lying if I said I didn't watch that Tik Tok of the dancing pool baby over 1000 times begging the universe to impregnate me on the spot.  But is going through a nine month pregnancy to be left with a saggy belly button and waking up at 4.00am every day for months to feed and change the dirty diaper of an entitled crying monster who grows up to be an ungrateful teenager worth the ten seconds of cuteness?  I think not.  But each to their own I guess.

At this point you’re probably like - ‘Is there anyone this girl doesn’t hate?’ - a simple answer, no - and I hate myself the most so don’t get any ideas about me being a self-obsessed narcissist, contrary to popular belief due to my extensive Instagram feed of none other than myself.

I think the real reason I’m not a massive fan of people though, is because you put all your love and effort into them ( and spoiler if you aren’t up to this part of your own fantasy movie yet), but they always disappoint.  They’re there one second and poof... gone the next like a Houdini magic trick.  That’s why I like my dog because unlike people, she can’t just decide to walk out when she’s had enough.  I've fooled myself into thinking that if I push the people who mean the most to me away when I get too close to them, then it won’t hurt as much when they leave.  Piece of advice - don't use that method.  You learn when it's too late that they were there for you when you needed them all along. I always know how it's going to end and if I’m completely honest - at this point I may be half the problem.  But you know what?  I’m young and it isn’t all that bad; at least I have a topic to write this English Discursive on (probably should’ve added a few more literary techniques looking back though).

Anyways, that’s enough of that caring stuff, now where was I… ah yes, I hate people and so on...

Year 7J Class Mandatory History - From the HSIE/History Department

As part of the Year 7 Mandatory History Course, 7J completed a unit on Japan under the Shoguns.  During our last week of lessons, the girls had the opportunity to decorate their own Japanese fans.  The Samurai class commonly used these as a status symbol and a means of communication, passing on secret messages.

Year 9 Elective History

A bit of fun to end Year 9 Elective History.  Queen Elizabeth I had over ten possible suitors of whom she chose none.  The girls reached into each of these (in a 21st century way) looking at what they could offer Britain.  In the end, Elizabeth I delivered her speech to the House of Commons outlining her decision not to marry.

Performing Arts News

Students have returned to Garcia classrooms, Keyboard lab, Garcia Dance studio, Music rehearsal rooms, the MCR and Tarmons Dance studio with great energy.  They were motivated to be creative and gain skills in their Performing Arts subject areas of choice - even with masks on!  The NSW Curriculum for Dance, Drama and Music requires so many hours of skill-building that it is a relief to get back in the classrooms and start creating and rehearsing again.

As I have supported my own Year 9, 11 and Year 12 Drama students to create and perform this term, I have also visited classes rehearsing rigorously, especially this week, to complete performance activities to present to their teacher and peers.  I have observed really exciting ideas growing and being shared in every space and, also outside.  We have had to change some of our ways of planning, groupings and rehearsing to ensure we are Covid-safe and can continue to be creative, but it has been gratifying to see everyone working together so productively and inventively.

My Year 9 Drama class has been rehearsing and performing works created using political theatre techniques we studied during Foxford.  It was very exciting being back in the MCR using the theatre lights, projections and the stage.  Students had to work a little harder with a mask on, but they made excellent choices that made meaning on the stage just as well as it would have without the mask.  See the photos of one group performing in class!

Similarly Year 10 Drama created directorial and design projects in response to our study of Absurdism.  They are now rehearsing scenes from plays such as Waiting for Godot, Bald Soprano, Ruby Moon and The Zoo Story.  Please see some photos of these great design projects (at the end of this article).

Yr 12 Drama students rehearsed and performed scenes from their first topic Contemporary Australian Theatre and created directorial multimodal presentations.

Years 7, 9 and 10 Music students are now able to play on our College instruments and it has been joyful to hear the pieces rehearsed in Foxford now played in small groups with harmonies and skill.  Year 12 Music students are also preparing their pieces for their first assessment.

Dance Years 9, 10 and Year 12 classes, have been working both outside and inside depending on the weather and their performances are looking fantastic as students relish the ability to gain their fitness back and really travel when dancing.  No more bumping into things as was happening during Foxford!

This was particularly challenging for the Performing Arts students, teachers and tutors again this year, but as Plato stated in the Republic "our need will be the real creator", or translated loosely in the 1800's and now a common catch phrase, "necessity...is the mother of invention".  I hope for a little less invention created by Covid changes next year and more creativity based decisions for all in 2022, but I am proud to say every Performing Arts student, teacher and tutor learned and grew and we created in amazing ways this year, and I am looking hopeful to what next year will bring.

A reminder about the many opportunities for Performing Arts Ensembles running at the College in 2022:

Dance:  Jazz Ensembles, Hip Hop Ensembles and Ballet Ensemble.

Drama:  Junior Theatresports, Senior Theatresports, Drama Ensemble and College Production.

Music:  Orchestra, Choir, String Ensemble, Rock Band and Ukulele Ensemble.

And also, a wonderful Peripatetic Performing Arts tuition program - so have a think about the opportunities available and sign up via the website.

I hope everyone has a wonderful break filled with creative gift making and loads of singing and dancing with loved ones and your community.

Head of Department Performing Arts

Dance Report

The St Vincent’s College Dance program offered an array of exciting classes this year including jazz, ballet, contemporary and the introduction of two hip hop ensembles.  All Dance students worked extremely hard during this challenging year as we worked together to produce a film clip inspired routine for each ensemble and elective class.

The Dance students have rehearsed since the beginning of the year, attended multiple classes online and rehearsals at break times.  Their commitment and enthusiasm has been outstanding, ensuring continued success.  So many personal achievements were reached, but most importantly, the girls have achieved these in a fun and supportive learning environment.

Thank you to our 2021 Dance teachers Ms Laura Fishwick, Ms Kayla Jomaa, Ms Thomasina Buchner, Ms Madison Scott and Ms Jamila Grace, for their support and commitment to developing Dance at the College, and for inspiring and empowering our students.

Reminder: DARTA - Parent Webinar via Zoom 20 January 2022

Parenting, alcohol, parties and sleepovers in Year 9:  Why this year group can be so challenging and the importance of putting things into place now.

Thursday 20 January 2022 - 7.00pm-8.30pm (AEDT)

If you're a parent of a child about to begin Year 9, it's important to prepare yourself for issues around sleepovers, parties and gatherings.  Putting things into place now can prevent potential problems in the year (and years) ahead.

This presentation will focus on the positive influence that parents can have on their child’s drinking behaviour, even during adolescence, as well as the barriers that they may face during this time.  Peer influence is a significant issue at this time and it is important for parents to have clear rules and boundaries in the area of sleepovers, parties, gatherings and alcohol.

This presentation will also examine the latest data on Australian teen drinking behaviour and the growing evidence on the risks associated with this practice.

For further details and registration please go the following link:   Parent Webinar
