From the Principal, Mrs Anne Fry

Dear Parents and Carers

Last night we celebrated the graduation of the class of 2020.  There were so many occasions throughout the year when we had thought a formal graduation was not going to be possible, that there was extra sentiment in the room.  These young women are taking their first steps in adulthood in a world made very different by the events of this tumultuous year.  They are well ready to take the next step, and to each we offer our absolute best wishes as they now wait for the HSC results and Tertiary offers.  They have a place in history now as the graduating class of the pandemic and all that agility they have practised this year will hold them in good stead for the journey ahead.

Another happy ending also for our Year 8 students who have returned home after the challenge and excitement of their camp.  Loading so many major events into the last weeks of this final term has created some major workloads which have been willingly carried by Mrs Elizabeth Brooks, Mrs Jasmin Mano, Heads of House, Heads of Department, the Advancement Team, Ms Michelle Smith (EA to Mrs Brooks), Ms Maxine Byrom (EA to Mrs Mano) and our wonderful teachers.  Not only are they still teaching, they are writing reports, marking assessments and many also are marking HSC papers.  A special mention also of the Boarding team, who are offering some very interesting evening programs in these final weeks of the year.  There are some very tired students and staff around, and while the end is in sight, it is not here yet.  We have our New Student Orientation Day on 27 November, annual Speech Night (online on 30 November 6.00pm), our Swimming Carnival on 2 December, Year 7 Vaccinations on 3 December and our Parent/Teacher Interviews (Years 7-10) on 3 December.  There will be no slowing down until the last bell of the term rings at 12.38pm on Thursday 3 December.

I hope you have these important dates diarised and will be able particularly to join into our online Speech Night.  It will contain many of the elements of our traditional end of year night, but you will be able to enjoy it from the comfort of your lounge room!

I hope the Year 8's and their camp team of Ms Tardo, Mr Anderson, Mr Mann, Mrs Williams, Ms Robson, Mr Fry, Mr Bradley, Mr Weaver, Ms Davis and Ms Buddle, all enjoy some catch up sleep and the luxuries of home this weekend.

Yours sincerely

From the Deputy Principal, Pastoral Care

This past week I have experienced the ‘bookends’ of our students - Year 7 traipsing down an abseiling wall on Camp and Year 12 celebrating on the dancefloor at Graduation.  There is much joy in teaching and as we witness the nurturing and treasuring of friendships and the exhilaration of students as they recognise their accomplishments.  Year 8 have just arrived back from their Camp experience and I hear the chatter of stories shared.  Such joy was palpable in Wednesday’s House Tutor picnics when so many of our Class of 2020 returned and for the first time in months reuniting with their vertical Tutor group.  We were reminded of the value of these relationships across the ages.  High school is a journey with so many moments of invitation to grow in relationships and a sense of purpose.  The Class of 2020 have every reason to feel proud knowing they have left an inspiring legacy amongst their younger peers to grow towards all they can be.

Year 10 enjoyed a rewarding step forward in this growth on Thursday as they participated in a Day of Empowerment and Compassion preparing themselves as senior leaders of the College.  The morning STAY SAFE self-defence workshop provided a great platform to unite the girls in physical activity championing their collective capacity to look after themselves and each other.  I applaud the student committee – representatives from each of the House groups - who led much of the day’s workshops. Students engaged in honest and respectful dialogue, articulating shared aspiration and strategies to build relationships of respect and inclusion and to lead with hearts and mind. It was a true privilege for those teachers who worked with this cohort in this space and we look forward to the continuation of what they have started.  Next week we have our Year 7 2021 students joining us for Orientation Day and they will be supported by Year 9 students who will engage in a day of building their leadership capacity.

It is fitting that this week I choose Relationship Skills as the focus for social and emotional learning to consider how parents and carers may support your child’s learning and practice at home.  The ability to establish and maintain healthy and supportive relationships with diverse individuals and groups involves:

  • Developing trusted and positive relationships
  • Communicating effectively
  • Standing up for the rights of others
  • Practicing teamwork and collaborative problem-solving
  • Resolving conflicts constructively
  • Showing leadership in groups
  • Seeking and offering support when needed.

Ways in which we can model and support young people to develop the skills to nurture positive relationships include:

  • Acknowledge and affirm the efforts of others with encouragement and affirmation; likewise - let your children know how it feels when they express  gratitude for something you do
  • Model fairness, respect and appreciation of others
  • Ask about how your children's friendships are going - what is particular about each of these to raise awareness of and appreciation for the variety of relationships that impact us in different ways
  • Talk to your children about times that we have built connections with new people - the challenges and rewards
  • Engage your children in talking out loud your reflections on potential outcomes of a situation before making a decision or responding - this could be holiday plans with family and friends - let your children hear the process of we adults navigating our positive relationships.

I express my appreciation to Ms Jane Palin in facilitating the two parent education webinars over the past two Monday evenings - Lisa Maltman’s Sleep for Better Health, Resilience and Performance and Paul Dillon’s Pills, Pot and the Pandemic.  Both experts remind us of the responsibilities we have in creating the environment and discourse to make healthy and safe choices.

The great thing about Term 4 is that it’s full of surprises.  My mantra every year has been that in Term 4, when Year 12 have gone, things will be calmer and we will all have a little more space and time to dream and put into action the great ideas that the luxury of time can give.  Every year I’m surprised that I get it so wrong.  Term 4 is always more full of activity and demands than every other term.  The surprise factor here is that this term has been extraordinary in the energy and enthusiasm that our students have brought to what they are doing around social justice, prayer and reflection, and all the things that make us a bunch of people who move toward a faith that seeks understanding, which results in a faith that does justice.  Our Vinnies@SVC group are running Zooper Dooper Friday every Friday until the end of term.  It’s great.  Today’s Zooper Dooper Friday was a bonus experience with our Performing Arts maestros making Caritas Christi Courtyard a musical hotspot.  Hot music and a frozen Zooper Dooper; that’s joy in abundance.  All funds raised will go to St Vincent de Paul’s Christmas Appeal.  You can imagine that St V de P are really stretched this year.  Every $1 helps.

This week was “Viva Lasagna” week, and 115 portions of home-made lasagna was delivered to our friends at St Canice’s Parish early this morning, ready to be heated and handed out to their lunchtime guests.  There’s something about the people at St Canice’s that makes me feel a little inadequate, and at the same time a lot more confident that the world is indeed good.  Indeed, it is very good.

Our Caritas Christi advocate, Ella Wise, is hoping to launch a new initiative and focus for the group.  The Sisters of Charity have recently flagged the very same area of need in the world as their special project and are in there making justice a reality for people who need it the most.  More information to come.

The Caritas Christi brief is awareness and advocacy for those suffering injustice in an international setting.  The Vinnies@SVC brief is awareness and advocacy in a local setting; they are aiming to bring some justice to greater Sydney while Caritas Christi is aiming to bring some justice to the world.

Our Catalyst of the Week is Sir David Attenborough.  His work has been a special interest project for Year 8 Geography.

Year 7 Science: From the Science Department

Students in Year 7 Science have been completing a unit on Geology.  The content which they have covered this term includes types of rocks, layers of the Earth and erosion/weathering forming landmarks.  As a culmination of this learning, they were tasked with choosing an Australian landmark and writing a poem or story about how erosion and other geological factors helped to shape the landform over time.  Below is an example of student work from 7S.

The Forming of Uluru

By Caitlin Hoggett and Ella Stearn

Raindrops formed potholes oh so deep,

mountains and valleys, immensely steep.

The flaky edges of Uluru formed,

while the weather turned to a storm.

Weathering caused parallel ridges,

dams in the shape of natural bridges.

Pressure turned sand into rocks sedimentary

after many long years, decades and centuries.

On the far north western side,

Uluru formed through minerals combined.

Iron in the great rock began to rust

giving Ayers Rock a bright red crust.

The forming of Uluru who knew?

Unbelievable, yet it's true.

St Vincent’s College Dance Concert 2020

The College Dance Concert was held in the College Hall this year.  Our Annual Dance Concerts showcase performances and compositions from elective classes, ensemble groups and co-curricular dance.  It highlights the developments and achievements of our students in the academic year.  Dance at the College has reached its tenth year, with 140 students involved in our production this year.

All Dance students have been working extremely hard during this challenging year.  These dedicated students have rehearsed since the beginning of the year and attended multiple rehearsals online, before and after school and at break times.  Their commitment and enthusiasm have been outstanding, which has contributed to the success of the year.  So many personal achievements have been made, but most importantly, the girls have achieved these in a fun learning environment.

A special thank you to our 2020 Dance teachers, Miss Laura Fishwick, Miss Kayla Jomaa, Miss Thomasina Buchner, Mrs Chloe Wong, Miss Morgan Anderson and Miss Jamila Grace, for their support and commitment to developing Dance at the College and inspiring and empowering our students.  To Ms Catherine Johnson, Mrs Belinda Peoples, Mr Robert Weaver and the Library staff, who have assisted with the set up, filming and editing of the concert this year.  This team of teachers have contributed so much and offered their time to assist the Dance program this year, and I am so very grateful.

Finally, thank you to all the parents, students and friends who have supported the students and teachers during this challenging year.  We look forward to our concert in 2021; celebrating 11 years of Dance at St Vincent's College.  We hope that your daughter can join in our program for this special year of Dance.

TERM 4 SPORT

ESTA Touch

Last week we had some very exciting matches of touch with many wins. The Junior Firsts’ are to be congratulated on their fantastic game against SCEGGS, with Isabella Mackay scoring a hat trick and player of the match!  The Senior Firsts and Year 7 Firsts also had great wins and played well as a team.

Unfortunately, we had many unexplained absences after Year 7 camp, with players not letting the head coaches know that they were not coming.  This is not acceptable and not only lets the opposition down if we must forfeit, but it is also not fair on the girls who have made the huge effort to come.

Good luck to the 13 teams that have qualified for the semi finals this weekend.  The other three teams will have play-offs for 5th and 6th.  Please make sure you are in full PE uniform and arrive a good 20 minutes early to warm up.  GO VINNIES!

Santa Sabina Volleyball and Basketball

With only two weeks left of competition, it’s pleasing to see most players are training hard and having fun at their matches on Saturdays.  Unfortunately, last week we had many unexplained absences, with some teams having to play without any substitutes.  If you are going to miss your game for any reason, please make sure you contact your head coach before the game so that they can try and find someone to fill in.  Being too tired or sunburnt from camp is not a reason to not fulfil this commitment to your team.

Ms Elyse Harmanis
Head Basketball and Volleyball Coach

IGSSA Water Polo

With only two rounds to go it is good to see so many of our teams sitting in the top four of the point score table.  All teams are training well and improving each week.  Remember there are no finals in the IGSSA competition, so its first past the post.  Keep up the great work girls!

Parents:  Please note that some school venues are now allowing one parent to spectate, but we must all sign in and follow the safe distancing rules.  If parents do not wish to download the NSW App or sign in via a QR code - they are choosing NOT to watch their daughter's game.

Daughters can be picked up at the same entry point after the game.

Ms Hayley Boatswain
Head Water Polo Coach

Ascham Friday Futsal

Unfortunately, we had one of our games washed out last week but the juniors had a good 4-3 win!  Hopefully, the girls will have another good match this Friday afternoon with the final match the following week.  It's first past the post with no finals, so keep fighting till the end girls!

SWIMMING TRAINING AND SVC SWIMMING CARNIVAL

The Inter-House Swimming Carnival is quickly approaching and will be held again at Drummoyne Pool on Wednesday 2 December, from 9.30am-2.15pm.  This Carnival is to help us pick the College team for the 2021 IGSSA Swimming Carnival being in March next year.  There is swimming training on Wednesday mornings 7.15am to 8.30am.  All water polo players are encouraged to go to this swimming session to improve their swimming fitness.

At next week's House meetings, we would like the swimmers who want to swim at the carnival to enter their events.  Those girls who would like to compete in the serious championship races at the carnival are to nominate their events on the Google form, in their age group for next year.  This form will be on their House Classroom until 20 November for any more nominations.  The 200 IM (individual medley), 100m freestyle and 50m for freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly, are the events we run for Age Champion.  If you would like to have a swim in the non-competitive events, please nominate for the 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke or 50m breaststroke, in the separate non-timed races.

This Inter-House Carnival acts as a selection for the 2021 IGSSA Carnival swim squad, and therefore, you must swim in the age group you turn next year (ie No 12 years).

FITNESS TRAINING

Fitness with Tash is on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3.15pm until 4.30pm and everyone is invited to join in.  All fitness levels are catered for and the venue will vary from week to week.  All participants are to get changed and meet outside the changerooms at 3.15pm on Mondays and/or Wednesdays. Please email Ms Jacobs If you are keen to sign up.  This is for all students wanting to get ready for cross country next year or to just improve their fitness in general.  Only a few weeks left but it's never too late to start.  You might even get to have a selfie with Russell Crowe like the girls did along with Tash last week - when they were lucky enough that he asked for a selfie with them as they ran up the Woolloomooloo stairs, because he was so impressed with their efforts!

TILDESLEY TENNIS

The Tildesley Tennis squad is training hard for next year.  We wish our talented tennis athletes well in their mission to defend the ‘Most Improved School’ trophy at the tournament next year!  Training is held on the College courts on Monday mornings 7.15am until 8.30am and Thursdays from 3.15pm until 4.30pm.  All girls who are interested in training are welcome to train with this squad until the final team is selected next term.
