From the Principal, Mrs Anne Fry

Dear Parents and Carers

I am relieved to report that we are now halfway through the written HSC exams, and so far students have not been disrupted by Covid.  We are not, and will not relax though until the exams finish on 3 December and the Term concludes for students on 7 December.  We are very conscious that many local schools have been impacted by Covid cases and I am extremely grateful for the very responsible behaviour of our families who have had younger siblings in the affected schools.  The Government has this week announced a trial of Rapid Antigen Testing in primary schools to reduce the number of students who have to isolate and to reduce the number of days of isolation.  At this stage, this trial has not been extended to secondary schools.  At the secondary school level we are relatively protected through access to vaccinations, use of face masks and social cohorting.

Today I want to share two significant staffing changes for 2022.  Our very highly capable Director of Teaching and Learning, Mrs Jasmin Mano, has been appointed as K-12 Director of Teaching and Learning at Pittwater House, Collaroy.  This is a co-ed school on the Northern Beaches and it will provide Mrs Mano with the professional stretch she was looking for after working extremely hard for five years on behalf of every St Vincent's College student.  Mrs Mano has been a passionate advocate for Teaching and Learning and I know she leaves our community with our respect, affection and appreciation.  For 2022, the very important role of Director of Teaching and Learning will be held by Mr Bob Anderson.  Mr Anderson is already on our College Leadership Team and will bring both continuity and familiarity with our learning initiatives, as well as significant experience in leading Teaching and Learning in other Catholic colleges in Sydney.

Ms Sheenagh Doran has been appointed to the position of Dean of Early Secondary.  This new position will work alongside the Wellbeing and Academic Teams to provide the best possible welcome and support to our incoming Year 7 class.  Prior to her appointment to St Vincent's as Head of PDHPE, Ms Doran has held many other leadership positions including Head of Middle School at Santa Sabina.  Unfortunately, this does mean we are now having to recruit for a leader of the PDHPE team, but we are confident we will find a fine, new leader and teacher.

I hope you enjoy a delightfully relaxed weekend before all the festive busyness starts in earnest.  Any trip to the shops is a reminder that Christmas is coming!

Yours sincerely

Year 9 Boarding 2022

We have had several conversations with parents recently about the impact of the COVID pandemic on routines and positive study habits.  As a Boarding College, we have a unique opportunity to offer a Boarding experience to Year 9 students in 2022 - this could be for a semester or a whole year.  The rationale behind this is to help re-establish good routines, supervised study and the chance to enhance the development of resilience and independence.  If you are interested in discussing this possibility for your daughter please contact our wonderful Registrar, Mrs Robyn Pedley to arrange a time for a conversation.

From the Deputy Principal

Last week I spoke of our teachers currently looking back and looking forward as we are assessing, reporting and planning.  So too are our students.  It has given me great joy as a Year 7 Tutor teacher to read the reflections of my students looking back over the challenges and accomplishments of their year and identify their hopes for the year ahead.  I include a couple of their reflections below.

What I have enjoyed most about coming to St Vincent’s College this year is the new independence it has given me.…most of all I have learned through the lockdown how to adapt to new situations.  What I found challenging, was trying to work from home with all the at-home distractions it was hard to stay on track but it was a good learning curve and now I am better for it.  What I most enjoyed was the ability to spend more time with my family and the ability to wind down from my busy life.  I have learnt that to let people see the best of me I need to put myself out there and engage with my peers.

What I have enjoyed most about coming to St Vincent’s College this year is meeting new people and hanging out with my friends and going to the boarding sleepover.  What I found challenging was keeping concentrated during online learning.  What I most enjoyed was that I got a good sleep schedule and the longer break times.  I have learnt that I procrastinate a lot….I am most proud of being able to do school during lockdown without missing one day.

Ignatian reflection invites us to pause and notice - to look back and recognise both challenges and strengths in order to recognise the presence of God amidst our interactions and our being.  From such reflection we are called to action.  It would be a pity to come to the end of this year that has been so incredible in so many ways and not take the time to truly reflect.  If we hasten too quickly to the end of 2021 to declare it a wrap, we may lose the opportunity for learning and growth.  Our St Vincent’s College Learning Framework directs us to inform ourselves by accessing knowledge and experience, to transform through the deep thinking of heart and mind, and to become empowered through the deliberate actions decided upon and committed to from such discernment.  It is through such intentional actions that we seek to live and love more fully.  Students have demonstrated so much tenacity this year; there have been moments of discomfort and difficulty and immense growth in self-awareness and perspective.  They have enjoyed opportunities to nurture family and friends and have discovered much about what matters to them in how they learn.  Please do encourage your daughter to take the time to complete her own Student Reflection (via her Edumate portal) that will appear on her Semester 2 report.  I am confident this will be worth returning to and sharing in the many years that follow as we look back on how the year 2021 impacted on how each person grew from the experience.

Currently Years 7-10 students have been invited to contribute their Vinnies Makes History projects to a virtual showcase for each Year group.  We are seeing amazing examples of creativity and critical thinking as students share their response to the Covid experience in their lives as adolescents, family and community.  We look forward to the opportunity to commend these projects.

Our Class of 2022 have commenced their first HSC Assessment Activities whilst continuing to impress with their leadership and care of the community.  I enjoyed two particular moments of awe this week.  One was minutes after the HSC Mathematics examination on Monday.  It was the usual lunchtime meeting for the Student Leadership Team, of which there are six who are Accelerated Maths students, having just sat the exam.  As it was also our Foxford day of lessons, I had arranged to meet with the other students at home via a Google Meet.  Then up popped the faces of our six mathematicians - still wide-eyed but eager to meet and share.  I acknowledge their generous commitment to this community.  On Wednesday we enjoyed House Assemblies - for me this is Cahill House.  I smiled at the authentic leadership established through trusting and supportive relationships.  Mika as House Captain, along with Mrs Anderson as Head of House, opted for the ‘live from the scene’ style of Assembly, streaming from the Year 11 Cahill Classroom.  What caught my attention was the inclusion of the entire Year 11 Cahill group, the visual of this signifying that community matters and they are all leaders for their younger Years 7-10 peers.  I include a photo from this Assembly.  There are aspects of our Foxford innovation that have strengthened our resolve to keep seeking ways to not just manage but improve how we do things.  I look forward to working with the 2021-2022 Student Leadership Team this Sunday, whether that be on campus or via Google Meet - generous commitment and innovation enable the Vinnies spirit to thrive.

From the Director of Teaching and Learning

The SVC marquis has become a permanent fixture outside Reception as of late, as a profound reminder to us all, that our campus is flourishing amid ‘the new normal’.  The normalcy for the Class of 2021, to proceed to the marquis I have nicknamed ‘Checkpoint Charlie’ - to respond to a series of questions ensuring their fitness to sit.  Mrs Fry as Chief COVID marshall, has been greeting the students prior to each exam, quizzing them on their wellness and offering in spades, a good dose of  pre-examination humour and sage advice as each HSC student ‘checks in’.  The photo of the week captures today’s Mathematics Extension 1 paper check-in.  The normalcy also for our Year 12 students, the Class of 2022, to be completing the first of their internal SVC HSC assessments whilst enjoying the commencement of their HSC course learnings.  Finally, it has been a pleasure to witness the normalcy of our students completing their final assessments for Years 7 to 10, whilst fully partaking in the completion of their curriculum for the academic year.  There are still two very dynamic weeks of the academic calendar remaining and I encourage our parents and carers to remind your daughters to give of their best and dress to impress in their finest SVC uniform, as they complete the final precious days of 2021 being on campus as a learning community.

Whilst the end of year is in our sights, our teachers are busy finalising assessment, marking and reporting for our students.  The work of a teacher is ‘indeed’ never done!  I appreciate very much the level of care and consideration teachers are undergoing to ensure that every student and every family, receives reports on their daughters Semester 2 learning, that offers the essential and powerful feedback that will ready our students for continued growth and achievement in 2022.  I will publish a detailed letter to accompany the Semester 2 Reports to capture our nuanced response to the pandemic, in terms of our reporting and prize-giving.  Suffice to say, both the Speech Night prizes and the Semester 2 Reports will be a testament from each teacher, of the demonstrated growth of each of our students in this most unusual year.  Our Awards and Reports will be inclusive of Terms 1-3 assessment schedules and our final Term 4 assessment results will be published on Edumate, prior to the voluntary Parent-Teacher evening on Tuesday, 7 December.

As Mrs Fry has acknowledged in her article - I have some bittersweet news to share with this wonderful learning community.  I reflect often on my genuine love of literature and my deep connection to my faith.  I am a believer in fate and in listening to what the good spirit is calling for.  I believe that the good spirit is calling me to extend my expertise and genuine love of teaching and learning to serve another Co-educational College to establish a reflective and genuinely authentic learning model, this time for K-12 students.  I might have to brush up on my playdough and gingerbread baking skills!  Best captured in an extract from Lewis Carroll’s ‘The Walrus and the Carpenter’ - ‘The time has come, the Walrus said’.  It is indeed time for me to embrace further professional growth.  I will leave this wonderful College with an enormous amount of gratitude.  Grateful for the genuine partnerships I enjoyed with our families, grateful for the collaborative efforts of my colleagues who fully embraced my wildest ideas.  Grateful for the support of my Cor Colleagues who are in many ways - my work family, and truly humbled by the opportunity I have had to work alongside our College Principal, Mrs Anne Fry - my mentor and my friend.  There will be time enough to thank the entire learning community for your support but for now I offer three cheers to the heart and soul of our College - our amazingly young ladies - you will always be courageous women of action!  As a parent I am grateful that our two girls had the privilege of a Vinnies education and the strength, compassion and poise I witness in them as a mother, is testament to this special place.  I would like to think that I too, have earnt the badge of honour - ‘Once a Vinnies girl, always a Vinnies girl’ - and I will wear it with pride.

We ran out of deodorant.  I was thrilled to have found the perfect roll-on deodorant at Coles for $1.45.  That’s a huge saving and it meant that I could buy three times as much, and so the Year 10 and 11 team who have put together the wet packs for Matt Talbot, could make three times as many.  Go us!  I love a bargain and I love to be able to do more.  It’s a bit Magis.  We ran out of deodorant because I cleared the shelves at Coles in Lane Cove.  I did get some strange looks at the checkout.  Fear not; I found some more to make up the shortfall and I am just back from Matt Talbot having delivered our 150 wet packs ready for distribution.  The Year 10 and 11 girls who set up the outdoor production line on Wednesday did a splendid job.  It was fun and extremely efficient.  Our Caritas Christi Advocate, Caitlin Young, roped her friends into pitching in, but they were all very happy to be there.  Community, joy, energy and a good cause.  That’s all a Vinnies' girl needs to be a courageous woman of action.  They promised to do more next week.  The team at Matt Talbot never ceases to amaze me.  Even though they know that the girls from St Vincent's are doing wet packs for them, they respond with joy and surprise and gratitude.  It makes me want to do more.  This photo is Lilas-Mae Njoo and Ella Wise popping in the last of the hand sanitizer today.

If you would like to contribute to the Wet Packs please click on the link.

A $10 ticket will provide enough items for two wet packs.  That means that two men will have the items they need to get clean, feel comfortable and regain some personal dignity.  Click here:  https://events.humanitix.com/matt-talbot-wet-pack-support

I have been cleaning up in the chapel this week with the help of Ken Devlin, who moves dusty cupboards with a smile and makes great suggestions.  He knows the history of the space and is keen for it to be beautiful.  I have a bit more to do, but the plan is in place.  I’ll share a photo when I have it all done so you can admire our beautiful chapel too.  I caught some girls in there this week - sitting quietly, soaking up the peace in the presence of their God.  We are very blessed to have this sacred space to care for and to love.  At the moment I’m trying to find just the right pots to help the space live.  More on that later.

I can’t wait for Advent.  It’s going to be more exciting than Christmas.  Our Year 7s are going to create a live Nativity scene each day in Advent.  They have their parts sorted and their costumes organised.  There will be Carol singing from our most talented musicians to welcome us all to school in the morning.  It will be a hoot and deliriously gorgeous.  One of the girls has asked if she can play the donkey - and I was delighted to be able to inform her that I have a donkey costume ready to go.  There will be scripture too, from Mark and Luke, who are the two gospel writers who talk about Jesus' birth.  The stories don’t match, of course, but that is of no consequence.  Like all our scripture, it is the spirit of the story that is important, not the number of angels or the direction in which stars move across the sky.

Our Friday Afternoon BIG Movie makes a come-back this week after a slight pause.  We will talk about “As It Is In Heaven” for a while, and then get stuck into “Samson and Delilah”, the Australian masterpiece.  It’s gripping, funny, disastrous, shocking and achingly beautiful.  I’ll be interested to see what the girls make of it.

Hampers!  Hampers!  Hampers!  They are coming in.  The Family Spirit hampers are looking good and I have already received two hampers for St Vincent de Paul.  How are the girls remembering to do all this good work and at the same time, bring their best selves to class every day?  I know my Year 10 and Year 12s are their best selves every time I see them.  They are a joy to teach and help me remember why I’m a teacher and not a forensic architect.

Boarder Lines

Each year we farewell the outgoing ‘class of’ with many Boarding traditions.  These have had many iterations over the years of Boarding and this year wasn’t any different.  The Class of 2021 were invited back to judge the annual Boarders’ Got Talent (aka BGT) show, which they have waited five years to do!  Janda and Tahlia were our MC's for the event and kept the momentum going until the winners of Year 11 were announced.  Year 11 were given the topic of Movie/TV parody and Choreographed Dance and chose their version of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ - hence the interesting outfits in the pictures below.  Year 10 deserve a special mention as they included many memories of the Year 12 group - it brought many tears to eyes - both through sadness and laughter!

Below:   2021 BGT Winners!

This particular Year 12 group was my Year 7 group of Boarders in my first year at the College.  I have many many fond memories of each and every one of them - independent of when they started Boarding.  As you can imagine though, the memories of Year 7 and Year 8 always stick in your mind and are always great to reminisce on to remind how far they have all come.  From the many friendship chats we had to have in the junior common room to their memorable act in Year 7 BGT in their tutus, to the laughing fits from all of them!  They have had Boarders' come and go but have always been a close knit group, and have learnt how best to live with each other under all circumstances.  I am so proud of the strong independent women they all are and look forward to their growth in their chosen field and their future.

VINNIES PREMMIE BABIES CHALLENGE

The 2021 "Premmie Marathon Challenge" has now commenced.  We have entered a school team in the virtual marathon (both the 42km and 100km), which is running throughout November.  You don't have to run the distance - if you prefer, you can walk, swim or cycle!  And you can also choose if you do it all in one hit or split the distance over a few shorter efforts within a week or even in multiple efforts over the month.   So far we have three staff members and fifteen students competing in the challenge.

As of this week, we have raised $3,459 for the premature babies and our leaders are Alexandra (Lexi) Tait Year 10, Emilia Reed Year 8, and Gemma Vinciguerra Year 9, as our top three fundraisers.   Keep up the good work girls!  It’s not too late to join or to sponsor one of our team members!

The charity is Running for Premature Babieswhich was founded by local mother Sophie Smith, who was the NSW State Recipient Local Hero in the Australian of the Year Awards in 2019.  All donations will help improve the chance of survival of premature babies by providing special equipment to hospitals.  Everyone who raises or donates $50 will receive a finisher's medal and anyone who raises or donates $200 will receive a free running singlet and hat.  So please email Ms Jacobs if you would like to join the Vinnies team, and use the links below to join a team or to make a donation to this very worthy cause.

DARTA - Parent Webinar via Zoom 20 January 2022

Parenting, alcohol, parties and sleepovers in Year 9:  Why this year group can be so challenging and the importance of putting things into place now.

Thursday, 20 January 2022  -  7.00-8.30pm (AEDT)

If you're a parent of a child about to begin Year 9 it's important to prepare yourself for issues around sleepovers, parties and gatherings. Putting things into place now can prevent potential problems in the year (and years) ahead.

This presentation will focus on the positive influence that parents can have on their child’s drinking behaviour, even during adolescence, as well as the barriers that they may face during this time. Peer influence is a significant issue at this time and it is important for parents to have clear rules and boundaries in the area of sleepovers, parties, gatherings and alcohol.

This presentation will also examine the latest data on Australian teen drinking behaviour and the growing evidence on the risks associated with this practice.

For further details and registration please go the following link:   Parent Webinar
