MATILDA the Musical - 22-26 November - College Hall

Dear Parents and Carers

It was a delight this week to return to an assembly in the College Hall after a long break. It was probably February or March 2020 since we had last gathered, and we enjoyed it so much we in fact gathered twice in the week.  One occasion was a wonderful, joyful celebration led by our student leaders and featuring a very uplifting dance sequence from Matilda.  It was special on so many levels - the calibre of our leaders, the passion and skill of our Matilda cast, the en-masse singing of the College Anthem.  The second gathering was for Remembrance Day and naturally the tone of the gathering was more sombre.  It was commemorative and educational as staff and students shared the stories of conflicts that have shaped Australia and often told from the perspective of a family member who had participated in a particular conflict.

Lest we forget.

There was excitement in the air today as our Year 10's tonight will enjoy their Formal at the InterContinental Double Bay.  This is a true milestone moment and often the anticipation and preparation is treasured by the whole family.  The reality of a night dancing in uncomfortable new shoes can be quite different to the imagined night of dreams.  A pair of flat shoes is often a very good partner accessory to the glamourous and sparkly pair that make the grand entrance!  We wish each of the students a truly magical night and one that is carried and stored in their memories of their school days.

The other excitement is from our dancers who are preparing for their showcase dance concert tomorrow night at the Seymour Centre.  It will be a spectacular "night in the museum" as the dancers explore this intriguing theme in their choreography.  It is a tremendous labour of love for Ms Santi, the dance tutors and dancers to produce the show, and we wish them well.

On Thursday afternoon the College was visited by the Trustees of Mary Aikenhead Ministries for their annual stewardship visit.  We were delighted to welcome Mr Richard Haddock (Chair), Ms Janet Freeman, Mrs Margaret McKenna and Prof Peter Howard.  They were gracious in expressing their appreciation for the great efforts of staff and students in living out the Mary Aikenhead Ministries Values.  Student leaders and staff shared stories and symbols of hopefulness they had chosen, to tell the story of 2022.  It was a wonderful story that unfolded over our afternoon together.  As usual, our students were the stand-outs - authentic, intelligent and articulate!

In hope,

Yours sincerely

From the Deputy Principal

Today I happened to look back into my calendar this time last year.  I was incredulous to see that it was this week last year that the HSC students were only just commencing their HSC examinations. Years 7-10 had only been back on campus for two weeks and Year 11 three.  Last year the Class of 2021 Graduation was originally to have occurred this evening.  It was then postponed to February; this year we gather tonight for our first Year 10 Social since 2019.  Last year Saturday sport was still not permitted; this year we are spread over Sydney enjoying Tennis, Touch, Volleyball and Water Polo. Performing Arts was a distant memory - this year we have and continue to enjoy a plethora of performances in Music, Drama and Dance.  Last year our Remembrance Day Assembly was via Google Meet - today the bugle called a whole community to stand in silence, gathered to remember and honour all who have died in the effort to give us peace.  And in a world of peace, we are gifted with education and opportunity.  We enjoy today what others have wanted for us.  It is timely to recall what we were yearning for a year ago as school resumed on campus.  There was an intentionally to ensure our young people finished the academic year with some opportunity to reconnect in relationships, to consolidate learning face to face and to enjoy the extra-curricular dimensions of schooling life.

It is useful to pause in order to take a moment to remember and appreciate what has so quickly come back as our normal but not mundane.  I do hope all in our community consider the opportunities we enjoy and offer in support of the education and development of our students.  We have significant community events ahead of us - the Year 10 Social, Dance Night, Speech Night, Swimming Carnival, and we expect the support of parents and carers in ensuring your daughter’s full participation in the fullness of her commitment to College life.  Such experiences cannot ever be taken for granted and the work of staff and student leaders to enable these opportunities ought always be appreciated.

I know the Year 10 students are excited in their anticipation of this evening’s Social, and I thank their parents and carers for honouring the College’s explicit expectations regarding conduct and supervision with pick up from the venue at 10.30pm and not to provide occasion for pre-event or post event parties but rather value the occasion of the Year 10 Social as sufficient time for young people of this age to enjoy themselves at a school event.  Students must be in attendance for their Saturday sport and Dance Night rehearsals tomorrow.  It is a privileged opportunity that commends these young women as they come to the end of their Stage 5 schooling and step up as senior students next year.

Webinar for Parents from DARTA - 14 November

Please see below a webinar opportunity to assist your understanding of vaping and how to navigate the education and support of your children with evidence informed by Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia (DARTA)

Paul Dillon is well known to us and will again facilitate our Student Education workshops for Years 10, 11, 12 in February 2023.

Vaping (the use of electronic cigarettes - e-cigarettes or 'vapes') continues to be an issue that attracts a great deal of attention as well as debate across the country.  Vaping is a new phenomenon, with the first e-cigarette being invented in 2003.  As a result, many parents have little or no experience with the issue as the devices simply weren’t around when they were in their teens.

This session will examine what we currently know about the use of e-cigarettes and vaping amongst Australian school-based young people.  This is an area that is constantly changing and parents attempting to make sense of the information provided by both the ‘pro-vaping’ and ‘anti-vaping’ lobbies may find it extremely difficult to navigate.  As we move towards the end of the school year parents are likely to need as much assistance as possible.

Cost:  $25 plus GST

This event will be live-streamed but, for those unable to attend live, a recording of the event will also be made available for a period following the event's conclusion.

To register for the event please go to the following link HERE .

”Celebrate what you want to see more of” - Tom Peters

Tom Peters is a Stamford educated writer and speaker focussing on empowerment and problem-solving.  The idea of celebrating and savouring the things that give us joy is an important concept in not only our personal wellbeing and performance, but also the collective wellbeing of communities.  At St Vincent's we have much that brings us joy and so much to celebrate.  At the points in our lives where we stop and step back from what occupies us in the everyday activity of our lives, we need to recognise the things that do bring us joy and celebrate them.

It is fitting that as we pass the midpoint of the last term, that we reflect and celebrate the joys of the 2022 academic year.  For the first time since 2019, we will be able to gather as an entire community - students, staff and families in one physical location.  This makes this year’s Speech Night extra special and a reason to celebrate in itself.  Speech Night is a whole community event and this week I spoke with students at the College Assembly emphasising that everyone has a role to play and this requires everyone to engage and enjoy the night.

The City of Sydney Town Hall is a unique Sydney icon that provides a setting like no other large space venue in our City.  The main Centennial Hall is dominated by the impressive grand organ which was purpose-built in 1890 in England and reassembled in the Town Hall, remaining one of the world’s most impressive organs.  It is one of only two organs in the world to have a 64-foot pipe (just over 19 metres) and it produces majestic tones that fill the Hall giving audiences a rare musical experience.

The St Vincent’s College Speech Night will begin at 6:00pm on Monday 28 November and will showcase a variety of gifts and talents in a range of areas, as well as recognising excellence in many aspects of College endeavour - both academic and non-academic.  A highlight will be the mass performance of Year 7 - something they have been working on diligently with their Music teachers, Mr McCrudden and Mr Samyia.  This is a tradition that picks up the thread from our last Speech Night at the Town Hall in 2019, with our current Year 10 students, who were then in Year 7, performing.

As is the tradition of Speech Night in all schools, one element of the night is to recognise exemplary achievement in courses which is the product of hard work and persistence.  In addition to recognition of individual achievement, such a celebration goes beyond providing a vehicle for us to come together and to celebrate the year we have had, and all that has been achieved together.  This is seen in the showcasing of groups of students from a range of pursuits outside of the academic arena.  I look forward to this special night in our College year when we shall all gather - students, staff and families to celebrate much of what gives us joy in our St Vincent's College community

From the Director of Faith and Mission

We do lots of service and outreach here at St Vincent's College.  Because it’s a vital part of who we are as part of the Christian Catholic community.  In the past, St Vincent de Paul has had a number of initiatives to involve parents and families in outreach work and lots of us have signed up for them - do you remember the Breakfast van?  But most of them got hit with Covid and local government restrictions and are still on hold.  But this has just landed in my inbox and it might be of interest.

Vinnies NSW is currently seeking volunteers aged 18+ years for the Vinnies Support Centres.  They do face to face community support, referrals, food and material assistance.  You would get to work in a team, assisting St Vincent de Paul staff.  They need admin and reception support, social media creative things and willing hands ready to do ad-hoc duties.  They are very flexible regarding volunteer hours - AND they have a new initiative that really appeals to me - a ‘Vinnies Support Crew’ mailing list.

The idea is that you sign up to the mailing list, they send you a list of areas that need support in a given month and you volunteer for whatever works for you that month.  I like this idea as it recognises that some weeks or months are crazy busy and other months we do have a bit of time to give to others.  If either of these ways of volunteering appeal to you, click on the link and check it out.

volunteers@vinnies.org.au

I like what we are doing here at the College with our social justice activities.  I like that we make cupcakes at home with our families and bring them in to support the work of our parish community at St Canice’s.  Very few of our St Vincent’s community would consider themselves parishioners of St Canice’s, but many of us would say that we are part of that community because we are integral to the work they do.  I had cause to run the numbers this week.  So far this year we have provided 2,256 cupcakes for those sleeping rough and those who are close to it in our neighbourhood.  That’s a lot of icing.  All those cake boxes and containers, all those little bundles of deliciousness, all those sprinkles and stars and smarties and flowers; all that careful carrying on buses and trains; all that washing up.  And most importantly, all that joy and hope that is given in those little cups of cake.  We are making a difference in the lives of people.  Thanks, Vinnies'.

I want to commend the volunteers who are turning up to run the kiosk on Wednesday afternoons at Matt Talbot Hostel.  I delivered 150 wet packs on Tuesday afternoon and now I have 60 more ready to go for next week.  Well, almost.  I’m just waiting for the extra cheap tissues to get restocked at Woolies, and then we can finish them off.

Vinnies@SVC is running a special Festive Food Drive for those doing it tough at Christmas.  We have committed to provide 26 bags of food for 26 families - some small families and some of eyebrow-raising proportion.  If your family would like to help out the team at Vinnies@SVC please click on the link HERE and pop your family name and your daughter’s name in the box.  You can print out the page for a shopping list.  We will have a collection point in Student Services next week where the bags can be left.  Thanks for your support.

We had a hoot on Night Patrol on Tuesday night:  Mrs Mary Cartmer, Ms Sophia De Prendegast, Ms Clair Norton and two fantastic Year 12's - Siara Ortolani and Charli Street.  We were so organised and our guests greeted us fondly.  Siara and Charli were in charge of beverages and keeping the numbers recorded.  They did a great job.  We ran out of sandwiches at our last stop, so we will have to make up 12 loaves of bread next time.

Thanks to Sana Issa for looking after our Sandwich team.  It was a small group but they did a great job.  Well done, Team Sandwich.

We are going well on the ‘Pen Pushers’ initiative.  We have dead pens in the box.  It’s a start.

If you have a collection of sad and tired stationery items at home in the ‘junk drawer’ like the Kenderes family has, then this weekend could be the time to clear it out and send the offending items into SVC to feed our stationery recycling box.  It’s a Saturday morning ‘over a cup of tea’ sort of a job.

Did you know our teams of volunteers have a Social Justice Prayer that we say together each time we work?  We find it helps us remember why we give our time and energy and love to others.  Here it is.  I hope it works for you too.

I think Jesus would be on the Sandwich team.  He’d be buttering the bread - and he would be on Night Patrol - trying to organise yet another blanket for Helen and finding the snack-packs with chips for Kenneth who craves the salt.  And he’d be running the till at Matt Talbot Kiosk and not worrying too much if it doesn’t tally at the end of the shift.  He’d be skipping around with deliveries for Coffee Queens too, and not spilling them.  But we know that Jesus is certainly at Night Patrol, and Matt Talbot, and St Canice’s.  Christ before us.  Christ behind us.  Christ on our right and on our left.  Christ within us.

More next time.

LRC News

Earlier in the year, four groups from Years 7, 8, 9 and 12 participated in the Kids’ Cancer Project competition, Write a Book in a Day.  As the name suggests, each team has 8 hours to write and illustrate a children’s book that is then uploaded to an online library for children in hospitals around Australia. Our students did especially well this year, with the Year 8’s book ‘Splintered Luck’ placing in the Top 3 in NSW out of more than 600 entries (written by Amy Garland, Ava McDonnell-Zammit, Caoimhe O’Beirne Stephenson, Isabella Cotroneo, Sophie Mocsari, Willow Griffin, Zara McCormack and Zoe Tolhurst), as well as the Year 7 team raising nearly $1,500 in donations!  Congratulations to all who participated!  Well done for raising money for a most excellent cause.

The SVC LRC Parent Library is now ready for parent borrowing!  Following is the brochure with all the information you need, including how to borrow and the books we currently have available. We will be adding to the collection regularly so be sure to keep an eye out for further updates next year.

We will also be opening up loan requests for our summer reading newsletter, “Towel, Sunscreen, Book” in a few weeks, so look out for more information in next week’s Bulletin.

Years 11/12 English Advanced Incursion

Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice

Last Thursday, our Year 11/12 English Advanced classes were given the opportunity to engage in an interactive performance of our current studied text, William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice.  This incursion was offered to us as a part of our study of the Common Module for Year 12 English Advanced, Texts and Human Experiences.  Extending to both individual and collective experiences, the module dissects the ideas of loyalty, love, mercy, anger and manipulation to reflect on the construction of our social frameworks, with our study developing our understanding of who we are as humans.  The Merchant of Venice addresses these important topics in a 17th-century context by examining universally relevant themes of racism, prejudice, vengeance, classism and patriarchal expectations imposed on women.

The Australian Shakespeare Company joined us in the MCR to honour the text with rich, multifaceted performances that helped us as students connect to the anomalies, paradoxes and inconsistencies in human motivations and behaviour apparent in the text.  This helped us to solidify our learning in a unique way, with brief analyses and explanations of the play's context explored throughout the performances.  Between scenes, we also had the chance to conduct group conversations to examine the depth of each character whilst simultaneously conversing about how Shakespeare's chosen language and techniques can help us comprehend the significance and purpose of the play in relation to our module.

The experience was overall extremely positive as we not only got to view performances of the play from skilled actors, but were also able to portray our understanding through the option of performing ourselves.  Seeing our peers act out performances from characters including Shylock, Portia, Bassanio and Antonio (amongst others) only furthered this positive experience, as it was enjoyable to see these themes portrayed by familiar faces.

We are proud to have seen such enthusiasm in the cohort to learn and cooperate in such an inclusive and supportive environment.  Overall, the interactive experience was highly beneficial in synthesising our knowledge as we move into our first set of HSC internal exams.
