From the Principal, Mrs Anne Fry

Dear Parents and Carers

It feels like Sunday as I write this newsletter.  The extraordinary public holiday yesterday created an unusual pattern for the last week of the term.  Today our teachers are involved in Professional Learning.  Many of our Year 12 students are here for revision classes but for the majority of students the holidays have commenced.  I wish them a happy and relaxed holiday with the opportunity to relax their schedules and enjoy the best of Sydney (or further afield) and the glories of the season of spring.

During the last days of the term we farewelled the class of 2022 with great rituals and great affection, and welcomed the graduating class of 2029 to Try High Day.  Hosting these two milestone moments in the one week provides great symbolism around growth and renewal.  Having seen the sophisticated, accomplished graduates on Saturday night leaving the College was deeply rewarding for their teachers and parents.  As I welcomed in the incoming (Year 7, 2024) class on Tuesday, I had such strong memories of having welcomed the Year 12's at their Try High Day in 2015.  That was my first year and the memory was strong of that occasion.  To have been able to see the growth materialised in every aspect of these now young adults allowed me to project forward the journey ahead for the delightful ten year olds I addressed on Tuesday.  This is the great joy for those of us who work in education - it is always focussed on the future.  An enormous thank you to the team who made graduation so special - Mrs Elizabeth Brooks, Mr Bob Anderson, Mrs Jo Kenderes, Ms Michelle Smith, Ms Belinda Peoples, Ms Maxine Byrom, Mrs Cherie Tucker, the Heads of House and Heads of Department, and to Mrs Sheenagh Doran and her team for Try High.  A big finale to Term 3.

As Term 4 opens up on 11 October, I bring your attention to important parent information evenings we will be hosting.  Firstly, for our current Year 11 parents (the graduating class of 2023), there is an information session on Monday 10 October, 7.00pm-8.15pm.  This will outline the HSC year and will be a wonderful opportunity to meet Ms Samantha-Lee Newbond, who will take on the role of Dean of Senior Secondary.  Secondly, there will be a Visible Wellbeing Parent Education Information Evening, presented by Professor Lea Waters, for all parents on Monday 10 October, 5.30pm-6.30pm.  Please see details in the link HERE , and thirdly an Information Evening for Year 7, 2023 on Thursday 13 October, 6.00pm-7.15pm.

This looks like another big week.  Thank goodness there are the holidays in between.  During the holidays Mrs Jo Kenderes, Ms Mary Crotty and Mrs Jody McDonnell are accompanying Year 11 students on an eco-immersion to North Queensland.  We wish them every blessing on this sacred journey.

Yours sincerely

Anne Fry

From the Deputy Principal

What wonderful evenings were had last Friday and Saturday with our graduating Year 12 students and families - we really did not want to get off the dancefloor.  Thank you to those staff who worked so hard to enable these celebrations and thank you to those who came and celebrated our wonderful SVC community.  This week, as I found myself passing HSC students on the way to revision workshops, whilst I was walking with Year 5 students visiting us for Try High Day, I was reminded of the joy in accompanying students on their journey for six years and how this ignites a new spark of readiness in greeting the eager faces of children I have yet to know.  It felt good.  We start over and invest our efforts to realise the hopes for each new family, buoyed by the experiences of those who have just completed their schooling.  I had the great pleasure on Tuesday evening to listen with awe to the HSC Extension 2 English students sharing their compositions and reflections upon both product and process.  The quality of intellect and creativity in these pieces, all exploring the female voice in navigating and shaping our world, certainly sparked pride amongst their teachers, parents and indeed themselves.  I taught a couple of these students back in Year 7.  I could not have dreamt then that they would be composing such sophisticated pieces of work five years later. Each student had mastered her craft in writing to develop a voice that has relevance to and hope for her world.  Thank you to their teacher Ms Playoust for hosting such an intimate showcasing in the Parlour.

Whilst the students are deserving of great accolades, it is one example for us to recognise the committed work of the staff at St Vincent’s College who also develop their craft to support the education of students.  Life-long learning is just as important to teachers as it is to students.  A critical component of our work as educators at St Vincent’s College is our commitment to a process of reflection for renewal.  A ‘spring season’ is very much part of our cycle of professional inquiry, albeit not confined to the months of spring, it is prominent in our work at this stage of the academic year.  Our 2022 Learning commitment has been to make the small changes that create the big difference.  From the collective College goal to promote rigour and resilience so that each member of the community takes personal and collective responsibility to maximise growth in learning, each Faculty Team has identified a particular goal and worked towards this through a process of collaborative inquiry - learning by reflecting upon evidence to inform action.  Our purpose is to build our collective efficacy - considering how we as educators work together effectively so that our small changes make a big difference.

This requires us to collaborate as professionals by design not by chance, inquiring into our practice by designing, implementing, measuring, reflecting and assessing for change.  Educational research on its own does not improve educational outcomes for students.  Teacher practitioners need to invest time to seek evidence in our own context of our school and adopt the evidence into decision-making and practice.  By increasing contextual knowledge alongside research knowledge, a better understanding of what works can then be implemented, evaluated and embedded to improve practice.  It is through professional collaboration that this inquiry is supported and developed, and like all learners we grow competence in our evidence-based practices that ultimately lead to improving student outcomes.  Such learning does not start and stop neatly at the beginning and end of academic years, but it is indeed the time of year where we gather and share our evidence of learning from our practice that informs our next phase of planning.  Faculty Teams have had opportunity today to do just this and we shall have opportunity at the beginning of Term 4 for all Faculties to share with colleagues the learnings and directions from their inquiry.  We believe this allows us to learn from and with each other in the Ignatian tradition of companionship, so that as a learning community we move towards the realisation of our 2022 College goal to promote rigour and resilience so that each member of the community takes personal and collective responsibility to maximise growth in learning.

We look forward to furthering our Visible Wellbeing learning at our Staff Professional Learning Day at the commencement of next term on Monday 10 October.  This will be our third full day with Professor Lea Waters, and we now find ourselves at a point of developing a more robust and shared understanding of the science of wellbeing which is informing how we live and teach at St Vincent’s College.  Our day in October will focus on Attention and Awareness - how to focus attention on emotions, sensations, stimuli such as directing attention to a lesson, as well as Relationships - how to nurture nourishing relationships and consequently express and manage the social aspects of learning.  Professor Waters’ SEARCH Pathway provides a framework to guide what we can look for and develop to enhance wellbeing that in turn improves learning outcomes.  It only makes sense that this aspiration will be magnified if there is shared understanding, language and strategies between school and home, as living and learning does not take a break at 3.00pm; in fact, families have more hours in the day to impact wellbeing and learning than we do in any one lesson in our day.  Parents and carers are thus encouraged to come and learn, and I guarantee be inspired and encouraged by Lea, at our upcoming Visible Wellbeing Parent Education Evening - Monday 10 October 5.30pm-6.30pm.  Please see booking details in this Bulletin.

That same evening we look forward to gathering with Year 11 parents and carers for the 2023 HSC Parent Information Evening, at 7.00pm, Monday 10 October in the College Hall (half an hour after Professor Waters’ Visible Wellbeing session).  The Class of 2023 will commence their HSC year in Term 4. Whether you are a seasoned HSC parent or this is your eldest child, please know how critically important this evening is as we seek to engage you in partnering with us in support of this particular child of yours in this particular context of HSC in 2023.  We will be delighted to introduce you to our newly appointed Dean of Secondary School, Ms Samantha-Lee Newbond, and share with you our hopes and supports for your daughter’s final year of schooling at St Vincent’s College.  We hope that some of our Year 11 Boarding parents who are bringing your daughter back to Sydney that afternoon may be able to arrange to stay and join us for the evening.

A reminder too, that tickets may fill quickly for the Parent Education Evening #after the bell 2022 to be hosted at Waverley College on Thursday 13 October 6.00pm-7.30pm.  This evening is organised by the combined group of Deputy Principals - Eastern Suburbs School Leaders for Youth - premised on our belief there is enormous value in schools collaborating, sharing ideas and resources to support our community.  Our key focus is working together to raise awareness and provide parents with strategies to help manage teenage behaviour.  We believe that it is essential for parents to see that our schools stand united, with shared values on social issues.  We will hear from some students about their experience during and post lockdown navigating the social implications of return to school and share our insights as educators to support adolescents to develop their strategies to manage experiences of regulating social media, anxiety, school refusal, self-harm, disordered eating, sleep.  In our experience we witness ways in which students develop resilience and capacity, often supported through the network of school, home and health professionals.  Tickets are $10 with all proceeds going to Headspace.

Parent Education Workshops:

Monday 10 October

5.30pm - 6.30pm:  Visible Wellbeing with Professor Lea Waters - all parents Years 7-11 invited.

7.00pm - 8.15pm:  HSC 2023 at St Vincent’s College - it is an expectation that at least one parent/carer of each Year 11 student attends this evening.

Thursday 13 October:

6.00pm - 7.15pm:  Year 7 2023 Parent Information Evening.

6.00pm - 7.30pm#After the Bell - Combined schools’ initiative for all parents/carers Years 7-11 at Waverley (see below for details and booking).

Whilst this week was a short one for students, we have busied ourselves with appointing the new 2022-2023 Student Leadership Team across all years and domains of schooling.  I commend these students for their generosity and I look forward to supporting their commitment and initiatives in nurturing a positive school culture.  Each new leadership body breathes a new energy into the life of the College and it is exciting to look forward to this in Term 4. Letters will be sent to parents and carers of the newly appointed leaders with details regarding the Student Leadership Retreat on Sunday 9 October.  We appreciate the efforts of these student leaders to attend this important day of orientation with their new team as they prepare to step into their new responsibilities.

A reminder that students return to Term 4 in their summer uniform on Tuesday 11 October.  This means the school hat is compulsory and must be worn to and from school, as well as at break times outside at school.  Students are reminded to have their uniform items labelled and ensure that uniforms are checked for correct sizing.  Please support the College expectations in that the uniform unifies the students without the need for adornment of jewellery and makeup.  School is a place for each student to belong to a shared culture, to share her individuality through relationships and learning, not through a rejection of uniform standards.  We will be clear and consistent in our expectations of uniform and appreciate your support as parents and carers.

From the Director of Teaching and Learning and Education Administration

”Grant me a penetrating mind to understand,
a retentive memory, method and ease in learning,
the lucidity to comprehend, and abundant grace in expressing myself.
Guide the beginning of my work, direct its progress, and bring it to successful completion.”

- Extract from ‘A Student’s Prayer’ by Thomas Aquinas OP

Thomas Aquinas was a philosopher and theologian who lived in the 13th century and has left an indelible mark on the study of logic and philosophy to this day.  Aquinas is the Patron Saint of Students and despite developing significant and lengthy works of high intellectual pursuit, always considered himself a student.  The adage of life-long learning is true for everyone, whether they are conscious of it and seek it out, or not.  We all continue to learn every day in almost every aspect of life.

This is particularly pertinent as our Class of 2022 conclude their formal lessons at the College and prepare for the upcoming HSC examinations.  This period of high intensity study culminates in a formal set of exams but is not the end of learning.  The day after the final exam marks the start of the next and exciting chapter, individualized to each person’s circumstances and interests.  Whatever that entails, whether obvious or more subtle, learning will continue on through life.  Our collective hopes and prayers remain with the Class of 2022 as they undergo these examinations.

Year 11 students will conclude their Preliminary studies this week, and are encouraged to enjoy a short break before they commence their HSC year.  Such is the nature of schools that the cycle of learning carries on, with each cohort being unique and bringing their own nuances and character to their learning journey.  For some this may include the conclusion of a course and for others the commencement of HSC Extension courses.  All Year 11 students are encouraged to consider carefully changes to their pattern of study and how they fully utilise time and resources in available study periods.  On Monday 10 October at 7:00pm, there will be an essential information session for all parents and carers of the Class of 2023 outlining critical information about the upcoming HSC year.

Students in Years 7-10 will return after the term break to studies that will conclude their courses for the year.  Whilst the break is the opportunity to rest and recharge, it is also a poignant time to stop and reflect on how their learning is progressing in Semester 2.  At the midpoint of the semester it is the point to consider if changes in study habits and effort are needed to finish strongly and fulfill the learning goals they have set themselves for this year.  It is never too late for students to engage more with the rigour in the work, challenge themselves and be resilient in their efforts.

Aquinas’s major work, the Summa Theologica, is a lengthy exploration of deep questions of logic and reason in a  theological context, completely in tune with our College motto of Scientia cum Religione.  It operates on the premise that both intellectual capacity and faith are gifts from God and should both be integral to how we face the world.  Significantly it is set out as a series of questions and then considerations of various options in response.  This underlines the importance of engaging with the harder questions in our studies and the benefits that come from being resilient enough to stay the course in seeking answers.  I always encourage students to ask questions in their learning as this is a good indication of engagement.

Director of Teaching and Learning and Education Administration

Each year we look forward to looking ahead to the future for our graduating class, but this also comes with knowing that their voices or smiles won't be heard or seen in the corridors or at breakfast anymore.  The farewell of the Class of 2022 was beautifully decorated by the Year 11s and wonderfully celebrated by all Year groups with soppy videos, nostalgic photos and a wonderful poem written by Brooklyn, Ellie and Isabella in Year 10.

You are leaving us now

My heart won’t accept how

For all, you have done for us

You always make a fuss

It doesn't matter now

You have our hearts full of trust

We hate to see you go

But we want you to know

Don't let us hold you back

Because we know you will grow

We are going to miss you so much

You are such a great bunch

And we love you so so much.

The Class of 2022, ably led by Phoebe Roach and Madi Speer, have finished with pride and joy but also with the surprise that it is them that are graduating. To have watched Millie and Mia from Year 7 grow into such caring and generous women has been an absolute joy.  To have seen the growth over the years in Phoebe, Lola, Dakota, Cella, Madi and Molly has been amazing.  And to see Charli and Cleo adapt to Boarding with such ease has been remarkable.  The Boarding staff wish each of them success in their future, joy in their life and wonder found in every day ahead of them.

Yours in Boarding

In their last Advanced English class with Ms Playoust, the students were given the following task:

Final Common Module:  Cake Experiences

In small groups, or on your own, decorate a cake, slice etc (can be savoury or sweet!) using some kind of symbolic representation from any of the texts we have done this year or the Preliminary year!  We will try to guess what your representation is and there will be prizes for the best one.

You will be assessed on how well you:

●       Demonstrate an understanding of the ideas and themes in one of your HSC or Preliminary texts.

●       Use the food medium to represent the ideas and themes.

●       Adhere to the conventions of decoration, appealingness and deliciousness.

Here are some of their creations!

Year 12 Extension 2 Selections and Reflections Night

This week we celebrated the remarkable academic literary achievements of the Extension 2 English class of 2022 in our ‘Selections and Reflections’ evening with their parents in the historic, intimate space known as The Parlour.  Students shared their collaborative reflections on the Extension 2 journey, using and mirroring ideas, motifs and other language devices that were used to craft their Major Works.  Students then shared individually their reflections on their own individual Major Works and specific extracts.

This occasion marked a first on our College Calendar in the time that I have been here at the College and I hope heralds the beginning of many more to come in the future.

Head of Department English

IGSA Netball, Hockey, Soccer and Basketball

Congratulations to the following teams who won their Grand Finals last Saturday.  Netball teams 7, 8, 12, 13, 14 and 15.  All three of our three basketball teams and SVC 1 soccer won the Premiership!

IGSA Football

As the season draws to a close we reflect on the ups and downs of football at SVC in 2022.  Whilst rain and illness continued to challenge all teams, the dedicated players who showed up week in week out are truly inspirational and I have nothing but thanks and praise for them.  Thank you!

Our spirited Year 7 team has shown wonderful growth considering the vast majority of the team had never played football before.  The guidance of Mr Broadhurst last term was very much appreciated and built a unity in the team that has flourished throughout the year.  Well done on finishing your season with a strong team effort!

Our junior teams had mixed results this year.  SVC 3 showed great potential with some very talented players shining.  We look forward to seeing them move through the senior ranks in years to come.  SVC4 had some great results this year, scoring plenty of goals and playing some very attractive football. After finishing second on the ladder, they were very unlucky not to make the final this term.  Thank you to coaches Amelia and Dylan for their support of our young players.

Senior football at St Vincent's continues to develop with SVC 2 remaining competitive all season.  Unfortunately, they came up against some very strong opponents in last week's semi-final, however, they should be very proud of their efforts this season.  We look forward to the Year 10’s and 11’s in the team getting back together next season and challenging themselves to go even further.

SVC 1 have had another fantastic season dropping only one game on their way to the Grand Final!  It has been an absolute pleasure to watch this team all season coached by former student and ex Wanderer’s player, Liz Grey.  It is hard to believe that this is a team made up predominantly of Years 8 and 9 students!  Every week they out-play teams stacked with quality senior players and our young team consistently show a tenacity that coaches can only dream of.  These young players are fortunate enough to have four outstanding Year 12’s that are excellent role models on and off the field.  They will be sorely missed next season and we thank them for their guidance of these up and coming stars.

I would like to give a special shout out to our Football Player of the Year, Samantha Jeffs.  What a wonderful season she has had.  The success of the team has no doubt largely been because of her outstanding performance in the centre of defence.  Playing alongside some very talented but young Year 8 students, her direction and consistency has been truly wonderful to witness.  Well done Sammy on a great final season playing Vinnies' football! Congratulations to all our leaving Year 12’s, Olly, Imogen, Elyssa and Sammy.  Your service to St Vincent's College football will go down in history and the win last Saturday was a fitting tribute to your time here at the College.

Mr Nicholas Schroeder
Head Football Coach

IGSA Netball

Congratulations to all 13 netball and 3 basketball teams who qualified for the Grand Finals last weekend.  We ended up winning 6 of the Netball Finals, so congratulations to SVC 7, 8, 12, 13, 14 and 15 who are all now the Premiers of their divisions.

Another big congratulations to SVC 1, 2 and 3 basketball teams for having a great season.  It has been very rewarding to watch all teams develop and improve each week with all teams winning the Grand Final.  Well done girls!  Special congratulations to Aisha Marten-Coney, who was awardedBasketball Player of the Year for her leadership and commitment to basketball this year.

Thank you girls once again for your patience this season with the weather and being down on numbers, you always pulled it together and helped everyone out.  I look forward to seeing you all back on the courts next year.

Ms Elyse Harmanis
Head Coach of Netball and Basketball

IGSA Hockey

I would like to firstly thank all of the players and your families for participating in hockey this term.  The commitment you showed in strong turn-outs at training and the competitive enthusiasm displayed in games despite difficult circumstances playing with reduced numbers at times, is a credit to you.

Our junior team had a difficult season playing against strong opposition and showed excellent determination in scoring all of their goals against the top sides in the division.  Although for many girls in this team, this was their first year playing hockey and each player showed great team spirit (and courage) in taking on the daunting task of playing goalkeeper.  You should be proud of the improvements you have made throughout the season.

Our senior teams were particularly affected by reduced numbers through the season due to injury and HSC commitments, but this took nothing away from the efforts put in by the available players each week.  The 2's team had some particularly close games against Tara and SCEGGS, with only fine margins dictating some results that did not reflect how far this team has come over the last two terms.  Similarly, our 1's team started the season with an impressive draw against MLC, however, although playing with only 8 players, were moments away from a win with our last goal coming just after the final whistle.  The team’s sustained dedication and enthusiasm throughout the season was finally rewarded with a well-deserved, exciting 4-3 win on the final day of the season.

Hopefully we will see everyone back next year for another enjoyable season of hockey!

Mr Liam Jepson
Head Hockey Coach

Fitness Training

Fitness training has now concluded for the year.  Tash will start back again for extra fitness lessons in Terms 1-3 next year.  We thank Tash for her excellent coaching and fun humour this year.

Term 4 2022 and Term 1 2023 Sport

Team lists have been finalised this week, although they are still in draft form as some students who were away for trials will be assessed in the first week back next term at training and there may be some minor changes.  Draws will be updated on the College website as soon as they are available.  All teams will commence training the first week back with volleyball and water polo on Tuesday 11 October.  So please make sure you have checked the College website to know when your team is training.  We have had a maintenance issue with the pool so we may not be able to start the water polo sessions straight away in the pool, but they will still be doing fitness and some ball skills on land.
