From the Principal, Mrs Anne Fry

Dear Parents and Carers

This has been an enormous week with an equally busy weekend ahead.  Starting with our wonderful Spring Fair last Sunday the week has just been joyful.  Congratulations to the P&F and the inspirational leadership of the Spring Fair committee, for hosting a very enjoyable, profitable and engaging fete.  The sun shone on the day and our own community was joined by neighbours, associates and people attracted by the sounds and energy of people having fun.  It was a nostalgic day as we remembered our pre-Covid days.  Thank you to everyone who came, baked, grew, donated, cooked or sorted!  Congratulations to our musicians who provided great entertainment on the day, and the many students and ex-students who worked on stalls.  It was so pleasing to see so many young people and young families at the fair.  I am sad to report that my beloved Beanie did not receive a podium place in the dog show, but she did receive a quite exceptional consolation prize.  She will be back next year.

Wednesday evening was a Music spectacular with a very slick, two hour musical presentation featuring students from Years 7-12.  Congratulations to all our wonderful musicians, technicians and our outstanding Music teachers Mr Stephen Samiya, Mr James McCrudden, Mr James Paull (choir), accompanist (Mitchell) and the Music tutors who have enjoyed working toward this evening.  It was thoroughly enjoyed by the capacity audience and we now anticipate with great excitement the College Musical in Term 4.  It is going to be a sell-out for sure, so when the tickets are released be first in the queue.

Thursday and Friday have been bitter-sweet as farewelled the class of 2022.  From Tutor, House, College and Boarding House, the class of 2022 have been farewelled with deep affection and appreciation.  These celebrations continue tonight with the Graduation Mass and tomorrow evening with Graduation, Prize Giving and a Celebratory Dinner.  The Boarding families will gather again on Sunday morning to ritualise the 'last return home' after, for many, six years of Boarding.  There will be much laughter and plenty of tears as the Valete season comes to an end.  This has been an exceptional class of students and we will follow their next endeavours with great pride and affection.

        Roll of Honour

'Do not let your hearts be troubled or fearful.  Allow HOPE to shine, lighting the way to peace'.  College Prayer

Good luck to all our Grand Finalists who will play over the weekend.  We look forward to hearing the results!  "Go the Vintilda's".

Yours in hope

"Fare thee well, I shall see you when our paths cross again"

This phrase is used to commend a person/s when they have achieved a state of completion with utmost perfection.  What enormous pride we have felt during the farewell rituals to Year 12 yesterday and today.  They gave us the gift of themselves to the very end.  Over my many years in schools I have witnessed many Year 12 partings, but today was an absolute highlight.  What was particular about this group is that they stayed true to their chosen legacy to be a Year 12 group that reconnected the community in a spirit of inclusion in our post-lockdown years.  From the moment they walked through the school gates this morning dressed in whatever aspirations they may have for “22 years from now” and gathered as a whole school community in Caritas Christi for the return of the Year 12 Farewell Assembly - their astounding creativity, good humour and affectionate sentiments were expressed in word, sound and Academy Award deserving film performances.  In doing so they gave a new gift to our younger students who had not yet seen a Vinnies farewell - and reignited for older students and staff the joy of celebrating milestones as friends and mentors within a school community that has come to be home for all.

How do I describe this class who I have had the privilege of knowing from their beginnings with us in Year 7?  Cheeky - curious - compassionate.  They continued to welcome new peers along the way and now at the end of Year 12, graduating as a group of 112 wonderful young women ready to begin a new chapter - what words come to mind?  - Cheeky - curious - compassionate.  As the Class of 2022 they have lived the value of the Year of Hope.  They have grown together to offer hope in support of each other - they have grown to look outward with hope, curious but unknowing what awaits, yet confident in their diverse and unique gifts to that have been nurtured by their life at Vinnies.  I hope their legacy continues - that they open themselves to new relationships that will offer encounters of hope - through purposeful word and action.  To Year 12 - you have grown up at Vinnies - and now you are already ready to be who you are in a world beyond Vinnies.  I do indeed look forward to seeing you when our paths cross again.  You chose for your theme today - 22 years from now - you have allowed yourselves to imagine aspirations and possibilities - celebrating your diversity of strengths whilst united by the schooling you share as Vinnies graduates.  Mrs Fry rang your last school bell at the doors of Victoria Street today.  Tomorrow evening you will don the regalia of academic gown and stoll.  May you treasure these moments with hearts full of pride, a pride shared with your family, teachers and friends.

And to you the parents and carers of Year 12 - the Year of Hope could not be more suited to a parent of a graduate.  Whether this be your first, middle or last child leaving school, as parents and carers you are drawn to ask what hopes have you had for this particular child since birth?  How have they have evolved as you have come to know more of your child - growing up from the 12 year old who entered our gates with all your discernment of St Vincent’s as the right school for your daughter - to now the 18 year old making her own choices about what comes next.  How do we stand not quite aside yet alongside, no longer in front directing or behind prodding.  Now is the time to celebrate and affirm all they are capable of without the expectation of knowing what or where they will fly.  For most of us, our kids are still living with us given Sydney rental market, however, whether it be a new address or still at home, life will be different and they are ready for it.  Parents and carers - you have done well - your daughters have turned out more than pretty well.  You deserve to feel so proud.  We now savour this special moment with you; we look forward to celebrating this evening in our beautiful chapel, sharing the sacrament of Eucharistic as an expression of our unity in Christ’s love for us.  Our lives have been blessed by being the community we are together and the Class of 2022 will continue to carry their own light of Christ into their world.  Tomorrow evening we combine academic gowns and heels at the Celebration of Graduation.  We are so very fortunate, given the past couple of years of postponing and hoping for events, that we are able to share a meal and a dance floor together to mark the occasion with such joy.

To parents and carers of Years 7-11, I hope these words offer you hope and a reminder of the journey you each hold for your children, with the knowledge that we do so in partnership as community.  On that note, I offer you a reminder of some Save the Dates for upcoming Parent Education and Information Evenings.  Please place these in your calendar and see details elsewhere in the Bulletin and in letters which will be sent to you next week.

From the Director of Teaching and Learning and Education Administration

“Start where you are.
Use what you have.
Do what you can”. - Arthur Ashe

As our Class of 2022 are completing their final lessons in their HSC courses, they enter the final stage of their revision in preparation of the HSC examinations that begin on Tuesday 12 October.  For some students it feels like this has been a long time coming, whilst for others it seems to be upon them very quickly.  As is customary in all schools, we now enter a time of formal rituals to acknowledge this point in their learning journey.  Having had their final College Assembly and farewells to House and Tutor, this time is marked by two very special events:  The Graduation Mass and the Graduation Ceremony and Dinner.

Particularly in a Catholic College, it is fitting to mark the conclusion of formal education with a Mass, giving us the opportunity to express thanks and hope for what has been and what is ahead.  The Graduation Ceremony and Dinner marks the formal transition from senior student to a Class of 2022 graduate.  A special aspect of this is the ongoing connection with the College that continues for a lifetime.  The symbols used for these rituals are important and signify the importance of the occasion.  Each graduate receives a Graduation Certificate to formally recognise their successful completion of their studies at the College and a significant collection of prayers and reflections in the tradition of the Sisters of Charity.

At this point exceptional academic excellence is also recognised along with exceptional contributions to the College in other pursuits and in leadership.  A Vinnies' education is of course so much more than academic, and it is fitting that at this significant point, other important aspects of that education are also recognised.  This proud moment is shared with parents and primary carers as a recognition of the partnership that has occurred during a student’s time at the College.

Another significant symbol is the wearing of an academic gown by the Class of 2022, which is an outward sign of the passing of a significant passage in one’s formal education.  For these students this will be the first time, but probably not the last time, that they will wear this unique apparel.  Academic gowns date back to the very origins of formal education in the 1200s.  The first universities were developed and run by clergy and the significant achievement of gaining an education was marked by students wearing the robes of their teachers.  Whilst such attire may seem far removed from 2022, it is a tradition adopted by universities and education institutions around the world as a universal symbol of the importance of the learning that has been achieved.

It is right that the graduating Class of 2022 feel proud of all they have achieved as a cohort, as well as individually.  As they move to the external examinations, they should feel confident that if they have planned their study, and prepared under the guidance of their teachers, that these examinations will be the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills.  Coupled with the support of their families and friends, they are on solid ground to achieve their best and know that their very best effort is the true measure of success.  I wish each member of the Class of 2022 every success in their HSC examinations and beyond.

We are delighted to announce that we will be offering a parent evening ‘An evening with Professor Lea Waters:  Wellbeing@SVC on 10 October 2022, 5:30pm-6:30pm.  We are expecting that the evening with Professor Waters will draw a full capacity audience.  Details regarding sign-up will be sent out next week.

An evening with Professor Lea Waters:  Professor Waters will share the Vinnies’ Visible Wellbeing (VWB) journey to date, and give an overview of the ‘Science of Wellbeing’ and our pathway ahead at St Vincent’s College.

Wellbeing@SVC Update

As you would recall, in May and June 2022 our College staff spent time working with Professor Lea Waters in laying the foundations to become a Visible Wellbeing School.  As we continue our focus and deep engagement, all staff look forward to spending a third day working with Professor Lea Waters on Monday 10 October, with anticipation.

Since the end of Term 2, students have been introduced to the VWB practice of ‘SEE HEAR FEEL’, acutely tuning them into their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others.  They have completed ‘Cura Personalis’ sessions weekly in Year 7 and fortnightly in Years 8-12.  Of particular focus this term were the three pathways to wellbeing;  Strengths, Relationships and Attention and Awareness.

During her last visit to the College, with much excitement, Professor Lea Waters was pleased to announce that St Vincent’s College was becoming the first VWB All Girls Catholic Independent School internationally.

Professor Lea Waters PhD:  Professor Lea Waters, author of ‘The Strength Switch’, is a world leading expert in School Psychology and Parenting.  Lea is an Australian academic, psychologist, author and speaker who holds a PhD in Organisational Psychology.  In 2020 Lea was named a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her leadership in psychology, education and the mental health sector in Australia.  Lea was listed as one of Australia’s Top Women of Influence and was featured on the Marques ‘Who’s Who in the World’ and ‘Who’s Who of Australian Women’ lists.  Lea is an Affiliate Professor at the University of Cambridge and University of Michigan.  Lea is a member of the Scientific Board at UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center and a fellow of the International Positive Psychology Association.

2022 St Vincent’s College Oratory Competition Winners

This year’s Oratory Competition continued with a contemporary approach, with the competition divided between recorded submissions for the Junior Oratory and digital screencasts for the Senior Multimodal Oratory.

Thank you to our junior finalists Olive Hope, Year 7, Taylor Hyde, Year 8, and to our senior finalists Natasha See, Year 10, Ana Toko, Year 11,  Francesca Oaten, Year 12.

A big congratulations to our winners:  Junior Oratory Champion, Taylor Hyde, and to the Senior Multimodal Oratory Champion, Francesca Oaten.

Year 12 Extension 2

Congratulations to the 2022 English Extension 2 cohort, Sofia Dermody, Scarlett Huxley, Lilas-Mae Njoo, Ella Wise, Ella Humphreys and Bonnie Joseph, for submitting their Major Works and Reflection Statements.  This wonderful group of students have worked tirelessly and collaboratively to create original compositions in a variety of different mediums, exploring a diverse range of perspectives about concepts they have been passionate about which are strongly underpinned by the College’s values.

A key strength of this cohort has been their willingness to take on constructive feedback from their peers and teacher and apply it throughout the course to improve their pieces and continuously draft, redraft and edit.  Whilst working individually, they have also worked as a team, offering each other support during the ‘ups’ and the ‘downs’, immersing themselves wholeheartedly in the investigative and creative writing process.  Fully embracing the intellectual and creative demands of this course, these students have showcased their authorial voices to challenge their audiences to reevaluate their assumptions about the concepts they have chosen.  Each student has demonstrated through their Major Works, the power of literature to transform us and broaden our perspective of each other and the world around them.  I hope these students will be able to publish their work post-school.

HSC Drama Students Nominated for Onstage!

OnSTAGE is a presentation of performances and projects by HSC Drama students presented by NESA and the NSW Department of Education, held in February each year at The Seymour Centre in Chippendale.  The program features exemplary group and individual performances, script-writing and video drama by 2021 HSC Drama students.

It is with great excitement I am able to report on five nominations - four Individual Project - Performance and one Group devised Performance Nominations for our Year 12 Drama students.  As their teacher, I can safely say I am proud of every member of the class and would nominate all of them if I could, but nominations are awarded by the external NESA markers on the day.  Our Year 12 Drama students recently completed their practical performance component of Drama for their HSC.  Each and every student performed to their best whilst performing in front of a live audience and external markers.  Last week we received exciting news that nine of the fourteen Drama students had been nominated.  It’s wonderful that the students have received this recognition as they have worked tirelessly and were committed to devising and performing exemplary pieces of theatre.  Congratulations to the nominated students:

Georgia Gallagher for Big Little Lies - Group Performance

Gisele Obeid for Big Little Lies - Group Performance

Sophie Parawa for Big Little Lies - Group Performance

Lucy Smith for Big Little Lies - Group Performance

Madeline Speer for Big Little Lies - Group Performance

Annabelle Arnott-Young for The Woman who Cooked her Husband - Individual Performance

MUSIC SHOWCASE 2022 was held on Wednesday night in the College Hall and was a complete success!

Mr McCrudden and Mr Samyia have been working very hard to ensure a broad and diverse representation of Music at the College, and a fun-filled seamless show.  Individual singers and instrumentalists wowed audiences with their talents, ensembles played well-known numbers and some challenging and exciting scores, and the rock bands really got everyone smiling and humming along.  Year 7 to Year 12 students were represented, and whole class numbers really wowed parents and friends with the sheer variety of skills and talents these young people have and are learning.

One of the most beautiful pieces of feedback I have read so far was, “What an extraordinary music night that was.  I was absolutely blown away by the talent, curation and production.  It was truly professional.  How lucky the students are to have their teachers and mentors".  I was literally in tears - good tears of course.

Congratulations to everyone involved - the students who were the stars of the show, our Music teachers Mr James McCrudden and Mr Stephen Samiya, Mrs Alana Santi our Dance teacher, for her support for the team but also running back-stage on the night, ensemble leaders and co-curricular tutors for all the expertise they provide to build skills and support students, the teachers who helped supervise, support staff who created the poster and program and made meals for students so they were well fed and calm before they went on.  Such a triumphant return to live music at the College - congratulations again to all.

IGSA NETBALL, HOCKEY, SOCCER AND BASKETBALL

Congratulations to all teams who have qualified for the Grand Finals this Saturday.  We have 10 out of our 20 netball teams - SVC 3, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 18.  All 3 of our 3 basketball teams and SVC 1 soccer team playing for Pocket Authorities!!

Please try and come to support your friends!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL TEAMS FOR THE GRAND FINALS THIS WEEKEND!  GO VINNIES'!

IGSA FOOTBALL

As the season draws to a close we reflect on the ups and downs of football at SVC in 2022.  Whilst rain and illness continued to challenge all teams, the dedicated players who showed up week in week out are truly inspirational and I have nothing but thanks and praise for them.  Thank you!

Our spirited Year 7 team has shown wonderful growth considering the vast majority of the team had never played football before.  The guidance of Mr Broadhurst last term was very much appreciated and built a unity in the team that has flourished throughout the year.  The team was especially thankful for the custom-made 'Vinnies beanies' during the freezing cold mornings.  Good luck for your final game on Saturday!

Below:  Year 7 soccer in their Vinnies beanies

Below:  Matisse (one goal) and Saskia Emery (two goal) celebrating their goals last week!

Our junior teams had mixed results this year.  SVC 3 showed some great potential with some very talented players shining.  We look forward to seeing them move through the senior ranks in years to come.  SVC 4 had some great results this year, scoring plenty of goals and playing some very attractive football.  After finishing second on the ladder, they were very unlucky not to make the final this term.  Thank you to coaches Amelia and Dylan for their support of our young players.

Senior football at St Vincent's continues to develop with SVC 2 remaining competitive all season.  Unfortunately, they came up against some very strong opponents in last week's semi-final, however, they should be very proud of their efforts this season.  We look forward to the Year 10’s and Year 11’s in the team getting back together next season and challenging themselves to go even further.

SVC 1 have had another fantastic season dropping only one game on their way to the Grand Final this weekend!  It has been an absolute pleasure to watch this team all season coached by former student and ex Wanderer’s player, Liz Grey.  It is hard to believe that this is a team made up predominantly of Years 8 and 9 students!  Every week they outplay teams stacked with quality senior players and our young team consistently show a tenacity that coaches can only dream of.  These young players are fortunate enough to have four outstanding Year 12’s that are excellent role models on and off the field.                They will be sorely missed next season and we thank them for their guidance of these up and coming stars.

I would like to give a special shout out to our four senior students.  Congratulations to all our leaving Year 12’s, Oli, Imogen, Elyssa and Sammy.  Your service to St Vincent's College football will go down in history - and a win on Saturday would be a fitting tribute to your time here at the College.  Good luck girls!!

Mr Nicholas Schroeder
Head Football Coach

IGSA NETBALL

With the netball and basketball season for Term 3 coming to an end and the Grand Finals approaching this weekend, all SVC netball and basketball students have really shown their strength in sport this term.

Congratulations to all 17 netball and 3 basketball teams who qualified into the semi finals last weekend, with 13 teams overall securing a place in the Grand Finals this weekend, to try and top their divisions of the IGSA competition.  I know you will put in 100% effort and let's hope we come out with a few wins!

Another big congratulations to all SVC 1, 2 and 3 basketball teams for having a great season.  It has been very rewarding to watch all teams develop and improve each week, with all teams making Grand Finals.  A special mention to SVC 2, who have improved so much from not qualifying for the finals last term, to making it to the Grand Final this term.  The girls are first place on the ladder and if they win on the weekend they will be undefeated in their division.  Well done to all teams!

Just a friendly reminder to please arrive 30 minutes before start time and find your coach to warm up.  Keep up the good uniform standard and attitude and I am sure we are going to have an even bigger and better season next year!

Thank you girls once again for your patience this season with the weather and being down on numbers - you always pulled it together and helped everyone out.  Good luck to all teams!

Ms Elyse Harmanis
Head Coach of Netball and Basketball

IGSA HOCKEY

I would like to firstly thank all of the players and your families for participating in hockey this term.  The commitment you showed in strong turn-outs at training and the competitive enthusiasm displayed in games despite difficult circumstances playing with reduced numbers at times, is a credit to you.

Our junior team had a difficult season playing against strong opposition and showed excellent determination in scoring all of their goals against the top sides in the division.  Although for many girls in this team, this was their first year playing hockey and each player showed great team spirit (and courage) in taking on the daunting task of playing goalkeeper.  You should be proud of the improvements you have made throughout the season.

Our senior teams were particularly affected by reduced numbers through the season due to injury and HSC commitments, but this took nothing away from the efforts put in by the available players each week.  The 2's team had some particularly close games against Tara and SCEGGS, with only fine margins dictating some results that did not reflect how far this team has come over the last two terms.  Similarly, our 1's team started the season with an impressive draw against MLC, however, although playing with only 8 players, were moments away from a win with our last goal coming just after the final whistle.  The team’s sustained dedication and enthusiasm throughout the season was finally rewarded with a well-deserved, exciting 4-3 win on the final day of the season.

Hopefully we will see everyone back next year for another enjoyable season of hockey!

Mr Liam Jepson
Head Hockey Coach

The St Vincent’s College Spring Fair 2022 was an amazing event!  We raised over $42,000 for the College!  This is an amazing effort considering all the external factors.  There was a huge sense of community and wonderful sense of hope through the crowds.  It took an army of volunteers to make the Spring Fair as successful as it was.  Many of these wonderful people spent countless hours to ensure a great time was had by all.

A massive thank you to the P&F Executive team:  Tricia Rubenstein; Elena Ferrari; Lisa Hunter.

Especially from the Advancement Team:  Cherie Tucker.

Logistics:  Justine Hughes and Jennifer Killinger.

An especially big thank you to all the Year 12 parents who kindly guided us through - I know we have big boots to fill next time.

I would like to thank our sponsors - Belle Property Randwick, Bondibuilda, General Beton Co Pty Ltd, Platinum Pre-School and Kaizen Academy.  We went into this Spring Fair unsure if we would break even.  Sponsorship allowed us to have the confidence that if no one turned up we would at least have some of our costs covered.

We are truly grateful for everyone for making the Spring Fair the success it was!

Many thanks once again.
