Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers

I would like to start with an enormous thank you to the College community for their support of the Spring Fair.  Despite gale force winds on the Saturday, the weather on Sunday improved to mild, cool breezes and long periods of sunshine.  Not quite as ambient as last year but sufficient to allow the crowds to comfortably take in the sights and sounds.  One of the more distinctive sounds came from the four-legged furry friends of St Vincent's.  The Dog Show again proved popular and highly competitive.  Congratulations to 'Alfie' for winning overall honours!  I would like to especially recognise the work of Mrs Jane Palin, Mrs Cherie Tucker, Ms Margarita Buazon and Mr David Osborne from the Advancement team.  They liaised and supported the wonderful, dedicated P&F team of Mrs Katherine Aitken, Mr Andrew McPherson, Mr Jim Demetriou, Ms Heather Hancock, Mrs Michelle McPherson, Mrs Justine Hughes, Mrs Julie Mooney, Mrs Tessa Morris, Mrs Louisa Haynes, Mrs Holly Davies, Mrs Jennifer De Bortoli, Mrs Arabella and Mr Adam Joseph, Mr Tim Powell and Mr Robbie Wells.

I do not have a final tally to share with you as accounts are still being finalised, but I think the generosity and creativity of all those who cooked, grew, donated, made, baked and sorted, will return a grand total.  Thank you.

This week we were treated to a preview of the Major Works submitted by our Year 12 students in Dance, Drama, Design, Visual Arts; Textiles exhibited earlier and Music students had already presented their final soiree.  Extraordinary talent was showcased, and we already have received wonderful news that three performances from the Drama class have been shortlisted for Onstage (the best HSC performances in the State).  A student who submits a Major Work knows the agony and ecstasy of finessing a work from concept to completion! I wish all these students well, and include those who completed Extension English Assessment Activities, Society and Culture Research Projects and final Creative Arts Practical examinations.

Today I had the privilege of announcing the 2020 Student Leaders.  In congratulating them, I wish to acknowledge the willingness and capacity of so many other fine young women in the graduating class of 2020.  Nominating for student leadership brings a particular vulnerability for the individual and I assure each of these young leaders there will be plenty of opportunity for each to lead and serve during their final year at the College.  The Student Leadership Team for 2020, the year in which we will focus on 'Service of the Poor' is:

Next week is the final week of classes for the class of 2019.  Let us keep them in our prayers.  It is easy to lose perspective amidst the stress of the HSC and the emotions of graduation.  Let's remember each in the class for their individuality, acknowledge the joy they bring to their families and friends and remind them they are unconditionally loved and treasured.

Yours sincerely

 Belonging to Community

On 16 August, Mrs Mano shared the metaphor of Kintgugi when unpacking the reality of resilience; in this practice of Kintgugi, the broken pieces of the pot are put back together with gold powder, the visible fractures adorned with gold rather than hidden.  In much the same way, St Benedict used the metaphor of the fragile bowl when talking about what it means to belong to community.  In Chapter 64 of the Rule of St Benedict, leaders are encouraged to be mindful when exercising their leadership:

Let him hate vice, but love the brethren. And even in his corrections, let him act with prudence and not go to extremes, lest, while he aimeth to remove the rust too thoroughly, the vessel be broken.  Let him always keep his own frailty in mind, and remember that "the bruised reed must not be broken" (Is 42:3).

That is, we need to be careful when ‘polishing the fragile elements of the bowl’ (those who may appear weak, less able, not community focussed) in case the whole pot should break.  We need to be aware that all people in our community form the vessels that we call family, school, church and society.  Each of these vessels require the diversity and range of skills and personalities as each holds the other together to shape the way we relate and interact with our world.

This week we have had much to celebrate as we explore the breadth and depth of our community:

  • Last Thursday, 31 students joined 5 teachers to raise funds and awareness for Legacy.
  • This Monday, the Lake Mungo Pilgrimage and Tanzania Immersion teams continued their preparation for their experiences leaving in December, and next Monday, the Warralong Mob will complete their last preparation session as they get ready to fly to Port Hedland on 27 September.
  • During Year 7 CP, Tara, Gemma and Isabella continued their journey in faith and celebrated their First Holy Communion with their peers at the annual Year 7 Mass.
  • On Tuesday, Mr Weaver, Ms Parish and I prepared and shared a meal with Refugee residents at Blaikett House, attached to St Canice’s Parish.
  • On Thursday, 51 students and teachers gathered in the Hall to battle it out in our annual JRS Trivia afternoon where $670 was made to support the works of our friends at JRS.  If you were unable to come and would like to support the work of JRS, please make a donation here or drop your donation to Students Services in an envelope marked JRS DONATIONS.

These snapshots of community show a little of the diversity of our wonderful community.  All of these experiences required courage and tenacity as the students discerned their involvement.  It is not ‘on trend’ to advocate for the voiceless, to be a witness to your faith, to walk with the poor.  Yet, on each of these occasions, our community members chose to gently polish the vessel, mend it with gold and celebrate it for the beauty that it holds.

If you enjoyed this reference to Benedictine Spirituality, you may wish to subscribe to The Good Oil, a publication of the Sisters of the Good Samaritan which won Australasian Catholic Press Association’s annual awards last night.  The publication is a courageous and informative discussion on how to not only live in community, but also grow in relationship with our God.

Boarder Lines

Sister Anne has been a crucial element to the College community, but particularly to the Boarders.  She has spent time taking out Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 for dinner at various times throughout the term.  The Boarders have loved having time spent together and having a lovely meal with her.

Whilst the Year 9's were at dinner on Tuesday,  the Year 10's then also decided to have dinner together at Potts Point Hotel.

The SVC Spring Fair is always a highlight in everyone’s calendar, particularly the Boarders’ Stall, and 2019 didn’t disappoint.  A huge thank you to Julie Mooney and Jen De Bortoli for their organisation and to all of you who baked, created, cooked, pickled.  Each year you truly outdo yourselves, so again, thank you.  A particularly huge thank you to Julie for her last Spring Fair after eight years - we hope to see you next year visiting!

The Annual Boarder Parent Function the night before the Spring Fair, had a lovely vibe this year on the Caritas Christi Courtyard.  Thank you to those parents who spent the time to attend and to Linda, Sr Anne and Anne Fry who came to join in the conversation and camaraderie.

Term 3 is always a particularly busy term and we look forward to giving a fond farewell to our Year 12 Boarders' over the upcoming few days and to celebrate their time in our community.

A big congratulations to Rosie Secombe and her dog Candy for winning the 'Boarders’ Dog' category at the Spring Fair.  Both Rosie and Alfie (my dog) are from Coonamble, so it was a Coonamble fest at the Spring Fair!

Yours in Boarding

From the English Department

Congratulations to the finalists of the English Department’s Oratory Competition, particularly to Kate Johnson from Year 8 and Millie Fisher, Year 9.  The runner up for the entire competition from Years 7-10 was Cate McGregor, Year 7, whilst Keeley Jans, Year 10, was the overall winner.  The level of presentation has been impressive, as has been the inventiveness and thoughtfulness of the content of the speeches.

Markus Zusak, author of the Year 10 text, The Book Thief, generously made time for a quick visit to see Year 10 on Tuesday to share his insights into the craft of storytelling.  He also spent a period with Year 11 Extension as some of them prepare for English Extension 2.

Some comments from the students:

Lucy Aitken:  From now on I will be focusing on practising parallel narrative which involves using backstory to influence and fill in the empty gaps in the main story.

Eliza Bodkin:  When I first started creative writing I was always finding it hard to come up with a story to write about, but Zusak’s suggestion of thinking of memories and picking little bits out of your life to help come up with ideas, I think will really help me to make my writing more interesting and personal.

Lily Deerfield:  My initial thought was how impressive his public speaking was.  When he spoke, he was confident in his words and very succinct.

Sienna Mackey:  I loved having Markus Zusak come in to talk to all of us.  I think he really pointed out that nobody is perfect and that your first draft will always have mistakes.  A good piece of writing is one that is drafted, re-read and re-written over and over.

Jemima MacPherson:  Unfortunately, I was not able to ask a question, but if I had had the opportunity, I probably would have asked what initiated and inspired him to write a book about such a devastating and catastrophic time in humanity's history.

Katie Spinks:  Zusak made me feel more comfortable with creative writing, as he explained to not overthink the situation you are trying to write about in a narrative.

Performing Arts News

Our Performing Arts students have been working hard in and out of the classroom and have had great successes recently:

Farewell to our wonderful and thoughtful student leader - our Arts Captain for 2019, Bianca Joseph.  I remember the talented but shy Bianca auditioning for Grease, and becoming the youngest soloist in that College Production singing Raining on Prom Night.  Bianca has been in many shows dancing, singing and acting since then but she has inspired younger students in the College through her incredible calmness and kindness backstage.  It has been such a pleasure working with Bianca - she has been an inspiration and her great speeches and MCing at Performing Arts events has been both professional and insightful.

Music Night was a wonderful evening where our musical students performed for their parents and friends.  Students from Years 7-12 performed solos and duets - singing and playing instruments in every style of music you can imagine.  Our College Ensembles also delighted the audience with Orchestra, Choir, Jazz Ensemble, Senior Rock Band, Junior Rock Band and Ukulele Ensemble performing with soloists, and showcasing both fun entertaining numbers and challenging musical pieces highlighting both the interests and developing skills of our College's Music students.  Congratulations to every student who performed and thank you to all the parents and friends who came to support and enjoy the show.  Thank you to Ms Alison Coates, Mrs Julianna Ormiston and Mr Robert Weaver, for their work supporting the students and their performances.

Spring Fair also gave many students more performance opportunities in the College grounds, but to an even bigger crowd including the general public. Some students had so much fun they returned to the stage more than once to enjoy performing for a live audience on such a lovely community day. Parents, friends, the wider community and even our many four legged, furry family members enjoyed the music as they shopped or enjoyed refreshments. Congratulations to all who performed and a big thank you to Mr Robert Weaver for all the work involved in setting up, preparing and sound checking for the day, and sound engineering the whole day.  Thank you to Mr Weaver and Mrs Ormiston for the auditioning and management in preparation for this fun performance opportunity for the students and their families.

HSC Practical Examinations Finished - Congratulations!

HSC Dance, Drama and Music Practical examinations are now finished.  These students have invested countless hours into the preparation of their Compositions, Performances, Individual Projects and Group Projects.  Their co-curricular tutors and teachers have also spent many hours in the Dance studios, rehearsal rooms and Drama classrooms enhancing, extending, perfecting and then rehearsing these works.  Congratulations to all our Dance, Drama and Music 1 students, Ms Alison Coates and Ms Alana Santi, for all their hard work and support.

HSC Design Create Perform - Congratulations!

HSC Dance and Drama students presented a selection of their works for family and friends at this annual event.  It is a wonderful afternoon and evening where you can view the extraordinary talents of our Art and Design students before seeing the Performing Arts students perform.  Congratulations to all - it was a wonderful night of celebration now that all the works are completed.

UPDATE! Very exciting news:  Three ONSTAGE nominations for our Drama students!

The following Drama students individual performances have been nominated for possible inclusion in OnSTAGE, a selection of performances and individual projects from Higher School Certificate Drama students.  OnSTAGE will be held at the Seymour Centre, Sydney, from 8 to 14 February 2020.

Caitlin Ryan nominated for her performance of MS DIVINE TELEOPERATOR.

Keep the Date:  Dance Night Concert 2019 Saturday 2 November at the Seymour Centre.

Dance Night Concert 2019

The College’s Dance event is one not to be missed.  It is so exciting to see every Jazz Dance Ensemble and our two Ballet Ensembles perform two dances, and all the classroom Dance classes perform together and co-curricular dancers perform in small groups.  Not only that, there are wonderful solos and compositions presented by student dancers.  The Seymour Centre comes alive with over 100 dancers and over 700 costumes.

Keep an eye out for tickets to this event.  It is guaranteed to be a fabulous evening.  Ms Alana Santi is already planning and choreographing her huge finale number, so we have loads to look forward to.

5-A-Side-Football

St Vincent’s College had eight teams competing in the second year of the five a side soccer competition. This was double the number of teams we had in the first year, so it was pleasing to see more girls and teams playing and enjoying this sport.  Each Saturday morning the girls played a version of soccer with only five players on the field.  The fields are much smaller than usual and therefore players needed to focus on improving their passing and footwork skills. I would like to congratulate all players on a fantastic season. The girls showed vast improvements, played well and did the College proud overall.

We had some great results this term and all teams should be pleased with their efforts. We managed to nab first place in the Senior A division for the second year in a row - congratulations to SVC 1 who were undefeated. SVC 2 were also undefeated and finished top of the Senior B division with SVC 3 coming a close second. SVC 8 won the 7B division in their first ever season. SVC 6 narrowly missed out on first place, going down 1-0 in their grand final.

Special mentions also go to SVC 4 and 7 in their first seasons of five a side and SVC 5 who had a very competitive term in a tough division.

Thanks also to our super coaches; Hugo, Nick and Matilda. These competitions, the girl’s enjoyment and improvements in skills would not be possible without them. Also, special thanks to the parents who come to support and cheer your daughters every week. We really enjoy seeing you and the support you give us as coaches.

Enjoy your holidays and keep practising your skills for next year.

Spring Fair 2019

What a fabulous day and what a pleasure to be involved.  We were blessed with fabulous weather which always goes a long way to making the Fair a great success.  There was a buzz in the air all day and by all accounts everyone who attended had a great day.  We are very lucky to have families and businesses both within and outside our College community who very generously donated money, prizes, food, equipment and time.  A huge thanks you to our major sponsors this year, Platinum Pre-School, and Richardson and Wrench, Potts Point.

As with any event like this, a lot of work goes in behind the scenes in the lead up, on the day and in the time afterwards.  I cannot thank everyone enough who helped in any part of the process.  While it is absolutely impossible to name everyone there are a some people who not only helped over the weekend, but have been there week in week out in the lead up:

Heather Hancock
Elizabeth Courtney
Michelle MacPherson
Justine Hughes
Allison Austin
Jo Pomering
Tessa Morris
Katrina Skinner
Arabella Joseph
Holly Davies
Julie Mooney
Jen DeBortoli
Andrew MacPherson
Jim Demetriou
Robbie Wells
Tim Powell
Louisa Haynes.

We also can’t run the day without input and help from the College.  An enormous thank you to Mrs Jane Palin and Mr Ken Devlin, who worked as hard as anyone to make this happen.

While numbers are not quite finalised, it looks as though we will come close to raising $30,000 which is a great effort.  If anyone has any feedback, thought or ideas how we can make it even better for 2020 please let me know.
