From the Principal, Mrs Anne Fry

Dear Parents and Carers

I hope that you have enjoyed this first delightful week of spring.  The College gardens are looking resplendent and the students have certainly enjoyed their break times in the yards.  The warmth will unfortunately disappear again over the weekend, so it is very important that the students wear the winter uniform and support the uniform expectations of the College.  The full winter uniform is required until the end of Term 3.  We are particularly concerned about the large number of students presenting every day in a hybrid of the sports uniform.  Often the students have a note, handwritten by themselves but signed by a parent to explain why they cannot wear the College uniform.  An extraordinary number of uniforms seem to be having mishaps in the washing machine, left an an alternative location or partially lost.  We are really asking for your support over these next weeks.  We have COVID-safe plans around when and where students change for PE, but that does not include wearing the sports uniform to and from school and all day (often every day including days they do not have PE!).

This little rant is a perfect segue into commending the P&F for funding the wonderful parent formation sessions with Dr Judith Locke.  Dr Locke, a highly acclaimed psychologist from Brisbane, presented by Zoom this week, and will again next week.  Her speciality is helping parents to raise confident and capable adolescents, and among the many topics she addressed was this generation's long suppressed capacity to press the buttons on a washing machine! Along with this great revelation, she provided many other practical and sustainable practices that can be adapted to meet the circumstances of all families.  I hope you can join the second session next Wednesday evening at 6.30pm.  Please see below the links that will let you register for this Zoom meeting.

Today I also used the connectivity of Zoom to join Mia Chaaya and Mrs Kenderes at the Archbishop's Award Ceremony for Student Excellence.  Mia was a very worthy recipient of this award for 2020.  Her citation captures but a little of Mia's great giftedness as a young woman of faith, hope and love.

Happy Father's Day to all the special men in our College Community. The role you play in the development of your daughter, grand-daughter, God-daughter or niece is so critical in her personal, faith and academic growth. Despite the COVID limitations, I hope you can celebrate in style. I enjoyed the time to remember my own Father this morning as I watched the Father's Day Liturgy.

Tonight we would typically be heading off to celebrate together at the Father's Day Dinner. Let us anticipate next year's Dinner, as we enjoy a quiet Friday night at home.

Yours sincerely

The College community offers its condolences to the following who has lost a loved one recently:

From the Deputy Principal, Pastoral Care

It was wonderful to see so many parents and carers connect into this week’s PART 1 webinar with clinical psychologist, Dr Judith Locke - Confident and Capable: Developing your teen’s resilience.  Judith shared knowledge and practical strategies for parenting to enhance responsibilities and confidence for our adolescent children.  We appreciate any disappointment of those of you who were unable to access the webinar on the Wednesday evening and are very appreciative of Judith’s generosity in repeating the webinar the next evening.  At the end of next week’s PART 2 webinar (Wednesday 9 September 6.30pm- 7.15pm), we will provide a survey to participants which will allow you to provide feedback and questions to be elaborated upon or suggestions for further exploration; we will share these with Judith who will follow with a response to these questions.

For those parents and carers who had not registered to receive the link to the webinar, and you may have heard from other parents and want to access this information, Judith has kindly directed us to her material.  Please see below from Judith:

·  As I write a weekly column and place that on my Confident and Capable or Bonsai Child Facebook page, you can find much of the content there.  I’ve added a few to make sure you have a complete set.  Here’s ten 700 word articles that cover a lot of what I said, and around the time when they appear on the Facebook pages.

-        Perfect childhoods:  Sept 3, 2020

-        Homework:  Sept 3 2020

-        Individuation:  Mar 4, 2020

·  Read my books.  This is, by far, the most complete solution and content.  The current one released “The Bonsai Child”, and the next one “The Bonsai Student” - likely to be released in October.  Follow my Facebook pages to get notice of the date of release and means of purchasing.  The Bonsai Child will show you the best way to be a good parent for your child.  It will teach you how to encourage your child’s confidence and resilience.  Its practical strategies make it an essential resource for parents and anyone working with families or children today.  Find it at Book Depository for a print book or on eBook at iBooks and Amazon or order it at your local bookstore.  www.bonsaichild.com

If you hadn’t registered but now you want to join Part 2 of the webinar next week - you will need to register for the original webinar session via the link above.  Parents who are already registered, you are all set up using your original link.  Any questions, please direct them to Mrs Jane Palin palinj@stvincents.nsw.edu.au.  I express my gratitude to the P&F for funding this initiative.

To complement this webinar, Dr Danielle Einstein is providing an online Parent Bootcamp Chilled and Considerate Parent Bootcamp designed to help parents understand how to grasp their natural response to uncertainty, and turn it around for a better outcome.  This course will provide the practical strategies to understand what is happening in terms of thoughts and emotions and learn to change a few habits that indicate less healthy ways of managing your worries.  As the College is already engaging with this Chilled and Considerate initiative, we have accessed a reduced cost per family to use the Bootcamp. Please follow the link (valid until 12 September) to enrol ($AU35 incl GST).

St Vincent's College Chilled and Considerate Parent Bootcamp

And whilst Dr Locke advised us not to make it all about the kids - this week has been heartening to have all our ‘kids’ on campus together going about our usual business of learning.  As a community we are proud of the many moments of resilience, positivity and generosity they share here at school.  We especially look to making these next three weeks, the last three weeks of schooling for the class of 2020, weeks that are charged with effective learning and good relationship.  Year 12 can look forward to rituals of farewell aware of the affection in which they are held by the student and staff community.

It is hard to believe that we are approaching the final weeks of the term.  Time seems to have flown by as the College this week has been anchored in the assessment and feedback components of the teaching and learning cycle.  The high attendance rates of our Year 11 students this week, is testament to their dedication and preparedness to approach this week and next week's Year 11 final assessments head on.  I am most impressed, as are my colleagues, of this cohort's efforts to enter into their examinations with a sense of purpose and determination to give of their best.  This sense of grit and positive psychology to give of one's best is transformative in learning.  It allows a student to remain academically buoyant and empowered to achieve their fullest potential.  I wish all our Year 11 students the very best for the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have acquired in their learning as they complete their assessments next week.  Our feedback and reflection process that will be activated when the marking is done, will ably assist students to acknowledge their own achievements.  This post-assessment period is a critical one as it illuminates each student's capabilities, whilst recognising and targeting the areas required for continued growth. In many ways, the eleventh year of learning is a practice run for the main event.  Students need to be reminded that these marks are internal only and do not contribute to the overall NESA marks required in the HSC year.  However, what is truly valuable to each student from their reflective thinking about their Year 11 assessment performance, is determining where to go from here.  Goal setting targeting outcomes requiring growth is a critical priority for a Year 11 student on the cusp of being an HSC learner.  There is no greater impact on this growth than a proactive approach that centres around academic care of self.  A determined and realistic approach which factors in a formal study schedule and regular conversations with each student's teacher will place each student in a confident and empowered position to activate agency over their learning. Underpinning this entire approach, our learning framework empowers confident HSC learners who are informed and transformed by the cycle of teaching and learning in positive and collaborative relationships with teachers and peers.

At SVC we inspire lifelong learners who are independent in thought, compassionate in attitude and confident to act.  Any opportunity that enables students to harness these lifelong capabilities are enriching and complimentary learning experiences.  Such an opportunity is available to all students at present and I wholeheartedly recommend that students from Years 7-12 take up this opportunity.  Captivate the Future is a not for profit organisation designed to give agency to student voice.  It ignites potential for young people to articulate global concerns that they feel most passionate about either challenging or advocating.  They are organising a public speaking competition at present aiming to improve resilience and confidence in secondary students.  I invite any of our students who are keen to take up this wonderful opportunity to shine, to enter this competition via the instructions attached here.  I will also place reminders in the Student Admin notices for next week.

I leave you this week with a resource to support examination techniques expertly created by Mrs Mary Cartmer in our Diverse Learning Team, to assist our students to remain centred, focussed and empowered to shine in their major assessments.  I look forward to this resource becoming a permanent fixture in our Student College Diary and in our College learning environments.

Mrs Jasmin Mano
Director of Teaching and Learning

We are getting used to reflecting on Religious and social events quietly at home, rather than gathering in our Chapel for prayer and reflection together.  This weekend I hope you can find 11 minutes to sit quietly and allow the prayers, images and wisdom of St Paul to settle in your heart in our consideration of Father's Day.  The link to our video reflection is here.

We haven’t been about to gather in the Chapel for Mass or prayer since before Easter, but the Chapel is a centre of imagination and energy at present.  The Sisters of Charity Archives has helped us make decisions about the best use and care of a number of sacred vessels and articles of significance which have been living in the Chapel, and need extra care.  We have been researching, reading, dusting off and preserving.  We have plans to help make the Chapel a more user-friendly space, inviting private prayer and contemplation, while allowing larger groups to worship in an organised and life-giving manner.  Working collaboratively with Archives, the Heritage Centre, Heritage Architects and the Sisters, is exciting.  We’ve been struck by the beauty of objects created to help us worship and been surprised by decisions made long ago that we can no longer see the sense in.

In the same vein we have been researching the Grotto.  I love a Grotto.  They are a beautiful reminder of devotions long abandoned by many and a glimpse of the importance of the religious imagination.  Our grotto, The Convert Grotto, as it is more formally known, built in 1924, is of course a reminder of the miracle of Bernadette’s vision of Mary as the “Immaculate Conception”.  One of the archivists for the Sisters of Charity dug out some old photos showing the original design of the grotto with the sandstone slab altar in place - pre-Vatican II style - along with descriptions of outdoor Masses for the students celebrated around the Grotto.  I’ve been thrilled to read that some activities done back in the 1930’s have been part of our outdoor Advent celebrations in recent years.  Advent Challenges are not a new idea after all.

Sr Catherine O’Carrigan writes:

In the niche stands a Carrara marble statue of Mary…. At night the stars around the Virgin’s head were lit up by electricity.
The Grotto was a very special place in the lives of both Sisters and pupils of St Vincent’s College …On 15 August is the Feast of Mary’s Assumption and the special Feast day of the Sisters of Charity.  For many years the day was made special by a big Procession of the Blessed Sacrament, attended by parents, ex-students and nuns.  …The party would descend to the Grotto where another Blessing would be imparted to all the people, with accompanying hymns.  The indented square in the table of the rock was for the altar-stone, containing relics from ancient martyrs.

“Courtesy of the Congregational Archives of the Sisters of Charity of Australia”.

The next piece of detective work will be to try to find the altar-stone.  What relics are in it? I’m hoping it will turn up in a quiet corner of the Chapel, waiting to be claimed and honoured again.

Have a lovely Father's Day.

Boarder Lines

During this period our activities on a weekend have needed some creativity to ensure that we are COVID-safe in everything we do.  Liza, our Years 10/11/12 Boarding coordinator, is the primary organiser of each weekend activity and she has recruited all members of the BRC to assist her coordinate an activity each week.  Last weekend, Naylise (Year 7) and Amelia (Year 9) ran a Just Dance competition which even included Liza’s dog, Beau, albeit he didn’t participate in the dancing - just a good audience member.  Naylise and Amelia put together goodie bags for each participant which is always greatly appreciated and enjoyed!!

As Year 12 finished their Trials, Year 11 began their end of course assessment activities examinations and to get them through this time, they have enjoyed the sunshine and a pizza lunch (courtesy of Year 11 parents to celebrate two birthdays of their daughters during the week).  Alfie has enjoyed their company! I am also thankful to our ex-Boarders' who have helped with supervision of all senior exams - to Grace, Isabella, Jessica and Matilda - thank you.  We have had to restrict the number of people that are present in the Boarding House, and these capable young women have been able to step up on so many occasions to support the Boarding House, so thank you. This shows just how the support for the boarding community continues on no matter where you are, what you are doing or when you graduated.

Yours in Boarding

Year 8 Italian Pasta Making

By Alyssa Costa and Astrid Salama - Groser 8J Italian

On Friday 21 August, both Year 8 Italian classes made some delicious pasta via our Google Meet lesson.  The lesson began with us creating our dough which consisted of egg, plain flour and salt.  We then kneaded the dough until we had a good consistency and let it rest.  We then flattened our dough so we could roll it out efficiently.  Whilst some of us used rolling pins others used pasta machines.  Either way, the pasta was a huge success as it was a good consistency, thickness and colour.  With the support of our teacher we were able to create all different shapes of pasta - it looked amazing!  Later in the day, some students boiled the pasta and shared it with their families.

The results were awesome and our class enjoyed exploring Italian culture by making this traditional dish that we all loved.  Thank you to Ms Khachigian and Ms Manitta for organising the pasta lesson.

Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey

Across Years 9 to 12, many students embark on the physically, mentally and spiritually demanding process of completing the Duke of Edinburgh Award.  One particularly rewarding requirement is the Adventurous Journey that must be tackled in environments that test the skills and perseverance of the participants.  Following, one of our dedicated Bronze participants, Lilas-Mae Njoo, recounts her experiences at Colo River and Wollemi National Park.

BRONZE QUALIFYING Expedition: Colo River and Wollemi National Park

The expedition was a fun, learning experience where I met new people and experienced new things.  Although the hiking was much harder than I expected, it taught us a lot about staying focused and positive.  We all got along and worked well as a group together, and although I didn’t know most of the others before going, we bonded over this experience.  We displayed teamwork by helping each other with our bags over the rocks, talking and laughing together, and making the best of negative aspects.  One of the biggest challenges for me was when we took a wrong turn on day 1.  It was dark by the time we arrived at camp and we were all tired and sore, but we were able to come together and have fun even though we were feeling deflated and exhausted.

Apart from this one misadventure, we were able to navigate easily and find the correct paths.  We sent scouts to find the path of least obstruction when we came to a dead-end and to look out for handrails to follow.  Following the rule of 'finding the path of least obstruction' made the hike much easier as it meant less 'bush-bashing'.  My favourite landscape type to walk in was through the low bush on a gentle downward slope, such as leg 5.  We could appreciate the native plants, try the edible Mountain Devil flowers and talk easily to each other.  It was amazing to wake up and spend all day surrounded by beautiful mountains.

For every leg we each had different roles:  Medic, whip, navigator, group leader, time keeper and note taker.  We rotated roles each leg to ensure that everyone had equal turns at each job.  My group only stuck loosely to these roles, because we all helped each other and worked together in our jobs.

I learnt a lot from the expedition about different landscape features and how to identify them on a map and in the environment.  We saw indigenous rock art and native plants and animals that were really amazing to see.  There were a lot of ant nests that were hard to avoid and I was bitten by a bull ant but apart from that there were no injuries in the group.

Overall, this was a really great experience in which I was challenged physically and mentally, but I learnt a lot, made new friends and had a great time.

The Term 3 netball, soccer, basketball and hockey seasons have had a fair share of disruptions due to Covid-19.  Due to government restrictions we are now changing to a regionalized draw.  Please see the new draw on the website

Thank you to all the students and parents who have adjusted to the Covid-19 rules this term.  Please note:  Even if there is a fenced off field, we cannot congregate and spectate from behind that area either.  Please be vigilant with sanitizing of hands and social distancing as much as possible.  Leave all venues as soon as you have finished playing.

IGSSA NETBALL

With the netball season at a stop-start, the Vinnies spirit never stops.  A major thank you to all SVC netball teams for turning up on Saturdays and giving it their best, no matter what the outcome is.  I know the girls are a little disappointed that the competition is now mainly comprised of SVC teams, but each team deserves a big congratulations for their dedication to netball this term.

We had some thrilling netball games last Saturday, with SVC 10 and SVC 11 teams putting on a excellent performance against each other.  After a goal-for-goal intense match, it ended in a much deserved draw.  The SVC 2 v SVC 3 match was also a nail-biter with the Year 10's showing that they are a force to be reckoned with.

This weekend we have some pretty big games again that are going to be a thriller, in particular SVC 1 vs SVC 3 in the senior competition and SVC 18 v SVC 19 in the Year 7 competition.  Good luck to all players - keep being positive and bring that Vinnies spirit each week to the game.  Please remember to wear the correct uniform and arrive 30 minutes prior to your game for warm up on the outside courts.

Please note:   This Saturday 05 September, there will be some St George Netball Association games being played at Robyn Webster courts at Tempe, and we envisage that parking will be very difficult.  Please try to drop off and pick up only as this could be easier for you.

All three teams are to be congratulated on their efforts at training last week.  The Firsts' had a well-deserved draw against Kincoppal and this week take on Ascham.  Please see the new draw for the week on the College website.  This will be updated weekly in case there are any Covid changes.

The junior team are working hard at training and are improving every week.  Last week we were finally able to have our Friday afternoon skills session at school and the girls are looking forward to another one this week with Matt.

ASCHAM 5-A-SIDE SOCCER

All six teams have had some hard-fought matches this season despite Covid interruptions.  A reminder that all players are to arrive 30 minutes before their game to have a good warm up and light training session outside the courts.  Full sports uniform is to be worn with SVC long socks, shin pads and boots (no metal studs).

We are still looking for a few more junior and senior futsal players for Term 4Please contact Ms Jacobs AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you are interested in playing.

BASKETBALL

Due to Covid-19 government restrictions, basketball games will continue with only Eastern Suburbs schools.  The draw has been modified and has been updated on the College website.

Our strong junior team has been doing exceptionally well this season and are to be congratulated on their hard training and gracious behaviour when playing teams of a lower ability on Saturdays.

We are still looking for a few more junior and senior basketball players for next term.  Please contact Ms Jacobs AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you are interested.

TERM 4 SPORTS TRIALS

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, no trials will be conducted for Term 4 Sports except for Year 7 touch.  Year 7 touch trials will be held on Thursday 17 September at Rushcutters Bay 3.15pm-4.45pm.  All other teams have been selected from last year’s teams and from past playing history.  In most cases there have only been two teams in each Sport age grouping which made selection easier this term.  These teams may be altered slightly once we have the first training session back next term.  Please speak to Ms Jacobs if you have any questions or concerns in regard to this.

We are still looking for a few more Year 7 water polo players; junior and senior basketball, and futsal players.  Please contact Ms Jacobs AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you are interested.

IGSSA ATHLETICS CARNIVAL and CROSS COUNTRY

Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, the IGSSA Athletics and Cross Country Carnivals have now been cancelled for this term.  If they can run a more regionalized-style carnival within the guidelines, IGSSA will endeavour to do so next term.

Fitness training continues on Mondays and Wednesdays from the College.  All girls are to meet outside the change rooms at 3.15pm, ready to go.  Training finishes at 4.30pm.  Training sessions continue next term, if we have enough girls who are interested.

Sports Stars of the Week

Congratulations to our junior basketball team who are leading their competition.  They have been training hard and show excellent sportsmanship on Saturdays when they have played teams of a much lower standard.  Coach Phil has been very impressed by the Vinnies spirit the team has been displaying this term.

This section is to make the College community aware of some of the exceptional athletes we have in the College.  If your daughter has represented her state or country recently in her chosen Sport, please send us any results, photos or blurbs on her performance to jacobsj@stvincents.nsw.edu.au
