From the Principal, Mrs Anne Fry

Dear Parents and Carers

It has been a delight to have sunshine and fair weather for most of the week.  Of course, the one wet day was 'photo day' on Tuesday, which prevented us from taking the large group photos outside on the Caritas Christi Courtyard.  With the assistance of digital technology, it will however, look as if we did!  The photographer will compile Year Group photos from photos taken on the day.  The photos this year were postponed, when in February we had such high absences in the student body.  There were again significant absences on Tuesday due to illness and the photographer will return on Thursday 4 August for 'catch up' of individual photos.  It may or may not be possible to include them in the digital group photo.

Through the week we have distributed a pack of five RAT's to each student in Years 7-11 and to the Year 12's, enough to use one before each exam during their Trials which commence next week.  For the Year 11 students, we are suggesting use only if presenting with symptoms but for the Year 12's, it is part of a broader range of mitigating strategies to keep them as well as possible during these vital weeks ahead of Trials and graduation.

The other 'take home' this week was the 2021 Year Book.  If it has not yet arrived home with your Years 8-12 daughters please ask for it, as it would be sad to see such a wonderful collation of the experiences of 2021 languishing in a locker or bag.  2021 was a memorable year and this Year Book will be a valuable archival record of what happened in the long lockdowns and other Covid disruptions.  A big thank you to all who contributed text and photos, and to Mrs Cherie Tucker, who has produced a beautiful looking Year Book.

Good luck to all our exam candidates (Year 12's and Year 11 Accelerants).  These Trials are poorly named as the name is suggestive of something 'to endure' (as in trials and tribulations!).  We prefer to think of the Trials purely as the opportunity for all candidates to present the evidence of all they have learnt and mastered during their extraordinary educational journey!  Every blessing upon them to enable them to perform at their best.

In hope,

Yours sincerely

In Sympathy

The College community offers its condolences to the following family who has lost a loved one recently:

Lanah Munro (Year 11) - Great-Grandmother.

May she rest in peace.

From the Deputy Principal

Sunday is St Ignatius Day.  Our Ignatian spirituality invites us to find God in all things.  Ignatius himself differed from his contemporaries regarding the imposition of definite times or places for prayer.  Whilst not excluding opportunities for formal communal or individual prayer, Ignatius prompts us to see God - and the good - in the ordinary and extraordinary, in the everyday and the surprising, in the sorrow and the joy.  What a wonderful invitation to enter into our weekends.  Holding an intention to look for and appreciate that which gives life, seeking to see God in those we love and may encounter can open ourselves up for a hope-filled perspective of our world.  May we as parents and educators seek ways to offer this perspective to our children so they too see the good in those they encounter, known and new.

We hold our Year 12 students in particular prayer as they enter into their Trial HSC examinations over the next two weeks.  Whilst feelings of overwhelm and worry may manifest in the late-night wobbles, their knowledge that others see their capability and potential, heard through words of encouragement and fresh cups of tea will remind them that they are indeed well-prepared and ready to give of their best.

As we commence our mid-year of learning for students Years 7-11, we hope students are indeed recognising their strengths and developing the learning behaviours to consolidate and grow learning.

As parents and carers - how do you support your adolescence in times of uncertainty and strain?  You are often both coach and cheer squad.  Give permission for your daughters to articulate how they feel - but also reflect back your faith in their capacity to keep on keeping on.  They are expected to face challenges in their learning and the process itself is designed to develop new skills.  ‘Looking for the good’ in process.

The world of our adolescence requires the same critical thinking skills to navigate their world of social media as required in their academic learning.  I offer here a parent education webinar that is coming up by the Office of e-Safety Commissioner.  Help your teens stay safe with online sexual harassment and image based abuse.  Here is an opportunity for you to obtain expert guidance that is current and researched based.  At home that you may be able to open up conversations that support them to protect themselves and critique this space.

From the Director of Teaching and Learning and Education Administration

“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” - Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States, who guided his country through their civil war and abolished the evil of slavery.  He was a self-educated person, born in poverty, becoming a successful lawyer and eventually President.  He was not ambitious for himself in politics and left to go back to his love of the law but was enraged by the proliferation of slavery and so re-entered politics to do something about it.  Whilst he was a successful President and changed the destiny of his country for the better in many ways, it ultimately cost him his life and he was assassinated in 1865.

Lincoln’s mantra was one of hard work and resilience to achieve anything worthwhile in life.  His famous quote above demonstrates the value he placed on preparation.  This is a life lesson that is absolutely true of success in learning.  Despite the most humble beginnings, it is through effort and work that one grows in learning and ultimately is prepared for the challenges that are on the journey.  Assessments, and in particular examinations, then become an opportunity to demonstrate skills and knowledge.  This is a message that I have been emphasising particularly to our Class of 2022, ahead of their Trial examinations that begin on Monday.

The “three Ps” provide a simple catchphrase to understand the basis of planning out their study for examinations:  Plan, Prepare, Perform.  At this point planning would be well underway, and if not, is the most immediate focus.  Planning a study schedule around their specific examination timetable is the starting point.  Once the plan is constructed with strategically placed study sessions, the work of implementing the process of revising and working through practice questions as directed by their teacher, can begin.  With resilience to pursue rigour in their work, students need to be confident that they will perform when the time comes and that the results will reflect the amount of work and effort they have invested.

At last week’s College Assembly, I emphasised the point that whatever the result of their efforts in exams are, it is the fulfilment of one’s God given potential that is the measure of true success, more than any mark or grade.  If at the conclusion of the assessment process a student can honestly admit to themselves that they gave their absolute best effort, then that will be a measure of success.  This will eliminate the empty feeling that is associated with the regret of knowing inside that you could have done more, and that the opportunity for that has passed.

I wish each from the Class of 2022 every success in their Trial examinations, and my prayer for them is this extract from Thomas Aquinas’s ‘Student Prayer’ which has stood the test of time for almost 800 years:

“Grant me a penetrating mind to understand, a retentive memory, method and ease in learning, the lucidity to comprehend, and abundant grace in expressing myself.  Guide the beginning of my work, direct its progress, and bring it to successful completion”.

Sacraments! Sacraments! Sacraments!

We are ready to rock and roll once again on our Sacramental program.  Students have missed out on receiving the sacraments for all sorts of reasons, and now is the time to catch up if that is what families and individuals would like.  Sr Anne Taylor, our College Companion, will run a preparation program for Confirmation, First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, in time for a special Mass to receive the sacraments on 18 September at St Canice’s parish.  Receiving the sacraments brings individuals into our Church community in the fullest sense, and the grace received from our loving God through the sacraments is real and treasured.  If you’d like to know more, shoot me an email kenderesj@stvincents.nsw.edu.au

The Sandwich Project is actually a lot of fun.  We provide 100 sandwiches for Night Patrol every fortnight.  I have found the best way to do this is to ask our generous Vinnie's families to donate a Woolworths voucher.  I can just run up to Woolies on the day and buy supplies.  I can get all I need for $150 a pop.  If you would like to support the Sandwich Project, just email me a Woolworths voucher and I’ll use it straight away.  I’m down to my last $20 after the extraordinary generosity of Vinnies' families last term.  Thanks to those families who have supported this initiative so far.  It makes it so easy, and you are so very generous.

Cupcakes continue to give joy up the road.  I was delivering a car load of jumpers to St Canice’s on Wednesday when one of the guests called out to me, “Hey, have you got cupcakes?”  I let him know that I would have more on Friday and the smile I received was so surprising.  He was determined to get a cupcake on Friday and he made me promise to thank the girls for their baking.  So, girls and families, thank you for your baking.  I delivered today’s load of cupcakes just after 10.00am and the enthusiasm was just delightful.  I wish I could take every cupcake baker with me so they could see the delight that a little box of cakes brings.  Sometimes it’s the small acts of kindness that are the most important.  I think we are often overwhelmed by the need to do BIG things, to be extraordinary, when really so much consolation can be received by the small things - even small cupcakes.

If your daughter would like to join the cupcake roster, she can access it on the Student Life Google Classroom and sign up to bake a dozen cupcakes on a Thursday evening, bring them in on Friday morning and I will deliver them.  I am going to add another column to the cupcake roster as I think we need more.  They are such a hit!

Coffee Queens was such fun this morning.  Our newest team members are working on their dance moves while they wait for the banana bread to toast.  We think this could become a signature feature:  Coordinated groovy coffee.  Why not?  Ms Butter is still able to focus on the coffee making even with Caitlin and Lucy having way too much fun around her.  Go Ms Butter!

We have plans for a free barista course coming up in August which will be open to Years 9, 10, 11 and 12.  In return for this course, students are asked to complete at least one barista shift at Coffee Queens to put their learning into practice.  When details have been finalised, there will be a sign up form on Student Life Classroom.

Dads, uncles, grandpas, carers and significant father figures in the lives of our students are invited to join the fun of the Father Daughter Winter Sleepout - Friday 19 August is the date.

Health advice suggests that the new wave of Covid infections are going to increase between now and the end of August.  We will be sleeping in a very well ventilated space - too well ventilated on a cold windy night, perhaps - so that gives a sense of safety.  But it is important that dads and daughters make an informed decision about their engagement in the sleepout for themselves.  Masks will be important when we are inside and the usual distancing protocols will be expected.

We have two FABULOUS guest speakers:  Dave Hammond, former head of Jesuit Social Services in Mount Druitt, will share his story of homelessness.  Dave is a most engaging speaker and a deeply good man.  It will be a privilege to hear his story.  We also have Jesse Wynhausen, Youth and Family AOD Counsellor (Psychologist) from St Vincent’s Hospital, Darlinghurst.  Jesse will share some insights into good relationships and how to maintain them.

We will have soup and a bread roll for dinner, and watch a movie together.
We will have a simple breakfast in the morning with a cup of coffee or tea.

We think $10 a head will cover our costs for catering, but we invite you to make a donation on the day to support the work of St Canice’s.  They really make a difference in the lives of our homeless neighbours.  I can’t imagine how they cope in this freezing rain and yet they have the ability to smile at me while I deliver cupcakes.  It amazes me that people can find kindness when their world seems so unkind.

A team of great dads will be sending out more information, led by Malcolm Wise, father of Ella in Year 12.  If you’d like to be part of the action, click on the link and sign up HERE .

The other factor to be mindful of is Saturday Sport.  Commitments there still need to be met, despite the fun of the Winter Sleepout.

Our Alumni team did Night Patrol last night.  The Vinnies' Spirit continues long after graduation.  That’s what we all hope for, right?  Thanks to Charlotte Patchett for organising a dream team of 2021 graduates to get those sandwiches and a hot drink out to our friends around Bayside.

On the Formation front, it’s the Feast of St Ignatius on Sunday.  There will be big celebrations in my parish at North Sydney on the weekend, and a number of our students will be helping our friends at St Canice’s celebrate Ignatius, and all he imagined for us as a community of pilgrim people - sometimes limping, sometimes running, but always desiring to move toward the goal of a Kingdom of peace and justice right here, right now.  Thanks to those Boarders who are going to represent us on Sunday at St Canice’s and to Alex Simec from Year 11, who is going to read the Second Reading.  Well done, girls.

We will be kicking off our consideration of the great work of Ignatius this afternoon in our Friday Afternoon Big Movie.  We are going to watch “The Mission”.  If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favour.  Jeremy Irons and Robert De Niro, tell the story of the Jesuits who met the full force of Portuguese and Spanish cruelty encouraged by, and the abandonment of the Vatican, in their attempts to save the Guaraní - a gentle, intelligent, cultured and gifted people, from brutality of the slave trade.  The Christian message of love and justice is lost in the jungles of South America.  The soundtrack brings back every ache of the brutality of it all.

Next week is …VINNIES ENVIRONMENT WEEK.

We will be focussing on the environment for a whole week from 1-5 August.  We will have activities all week but the most exciting activity will be our Environment Breakfast on Wednesday 3 August at 7.30am.  All students and staff are invited to join us for a $10 breakfast with juice and coffee or hot chocolate.  Click on the link to purchase tickets https://events.humanitix.com/environment-breakfast/tickets

But, the breakfast is not the exciting part… Ms Anni Austin, Head of Sustainability for Bovis LendLease is coming to St Vincent's to give us the low down on how big development is focussing on sustainability, and is looking to the future with determined efforts to protect our environment.  She comes to us with 30 years experience in local and international development.  She is passionate about sustainability, the environment, pollution of air, sea, land, waterways, kitchens, backyards, bodies and minds.  Anni has a strong background in Catholic Social Teaching.  She believes that caring for the earth and every creature on it is an imperative that comes from an intelligent, informed and sensible way to live now and into the future.  We have hit the jackpot with this one.  I encourage all students to attend if they possibly can.  They can find the link to buy a ticket for breakfast on the Student Life Classroom or click on the link above.

This photo is a capturing of our delivery of a check for $1161.00 to Matt Talbot Hostel, after our Edible Books Festival.  Vinnies girls do cake!  Mike Synnot was a bit overwhelmed.  Behind him you can see the boxes of Wet Packs that our team put together.  We are making a difference.  And we are doing it with love and all for the greater glory of God.

Here’s a very challenging prayer from Ignatius.

Is this possible for us?

Take Lord, and receive all my liberty,

my memory, my understanding, and my entire will,

all that I have and possess. You have given all to me.

To you, O Lord, I return it.

All is yours.

Dispose of it wholly according to your will.

Give me only your love and your grace, for this is sufficient for me.

Boarder Lines

Who doesn’t love some retro bowling on a rainy Friday night.  Boarders travelled to Mascot to Manhattan Superbowl for some old-fashioned milkshakes, bowling shoes and music to keep us entertained for our games of fun and laughter.  Some new skills were learnt, some banter was to be had and an overall fun night together.

With our annual 'Boarders Got Talent' on Sunday, every Year group spent Saturday rehearsing their particular themes.  Year 7 drew the short straw, and their random theme was 'Stand Up Comedy'.  Year 8 with 'the Bible and an acoustic song', Year 9 got their own 'personal choice' (the best theme to get!), Year 10 drew out 'Reality TV', and Year 11 received 'Music Video'.  Some great selections, which provided some amazing entertainment to the Year 12 judges and Mrs Brooks on Sunday.  Year 10 were the victors on the day - a win they have been longing for and have been very close to for the last three years.  Well done to all involved, and bring on 2023 BGT!

Leave Requests on Orah:  A reminder to all parents to please check leave on Orah before approving, to ensure that you are happy with the details and they are correct.

Also, reminding you that Boarders’ Travel Day for Term 3 is Friday 23 September and the In-Weekend on 16/17/18 September is the farewell weekend for Year 12, so we remind all Boarders' of their attendance during those days.

Last term - highlights

  • Winter Reading Challenge - Winner - Siara Ortolani.  Special mention to Satine Gallardo-Walker and Gemma Vinciguerra
  • Write a Book in a Day - seniors
  • Edible Book Festival
  • Book, Blanket, Ugg Boots

This term - coming up

  • Book Week (20-26 August)
  • Book-opoly
  • Write a Book in a Day - juniors
  • Spelling Bee?

Last term was packed with a variety of library events, from cakes to writing to reading, and we were so thrilled with the success of it all!

Throughout all of last term we ran the Winter Reading Challenge.  Students would earn an entry into a raffle for every book they read and then another if they wrote us a review, with the prize being a $50 gift card generously donated by our local book supplier, Potts Point Bookshop.  The raffle was drawn on the last day of term with nearly 120 entries and was won by Year 11 student, Siara Ortolani.  We hope you love the books you choose with your voucher! Special mention goes to Satine Gallardo-Walker (Year 8) and Gemma Vinciguerra (Year 10) for their many entries and reviews.  It’s fantastic to hear your thoughts, so please do keep writing to us!

We also had a group of Year 12’s give up their long weekend Monday to participate in the Kids’ Cancer Project’s Write a Book in a Day competition.  Emeline Kwok-Valevale, Lilas-Mae Njoo, Ella Wide, Mia Richter-Weinstein, Ella Humphreys and Cleo Heywood, teamed up with the mission of writing a children’s book within twelve hours.  The cost of the entry fee goes toward the Kids’ Cancer Project and the books that are written are sent to the Ronald McDonald House charity, where each child receives their own book.  It’s a beautiful way of raising money and the students have a blast every year.  Well done team!

On the final Monday of last term, we held our much anticipated Edible Book Festival.  The students baked and brought in cakes that were decorated with their favourite book characters and covers!  The students vote on their favourite, then we hold a staff auction and whichever cakes are not sold whole in the auction, are sold by the piece to the students at lunchtime.  It was fantastic to see the creativity of students shine through - the cakes were delicious and we raised an amazing $1200 for Matthew Talbot Hostel!

Over the holidays we also ran Book, Blanket, Ugg Boots - registered students were loaned two copies of the same book to take home to their families, one copy for the student and one for their parent to read along with them.  It was greatly received and we had more enquiries than books to loan out, so thank you for your support!  Our next student/parent program will run over the summer holidays, so keep an eye out so you don’t miss out!

We have another big term coming up ahead of us with Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book Week beginning on 20 August, when we will have a range of quizzes and activities for the students to participate in.  We are also running Book-opoly, where students roll the dice to find their next read, earning a prize every time they pass GO!  It’s wonderful to see the students interacting with our book displays and events, and we look forward to the business the rest of the term will bring!

TERM 3 SPORT

IGSA Netball, Basketball, Hockey and Football

Congratulations to all teams who got to play their first rounds last weekend. Hopefully the rain will stay away this Saturday!

Team lists, venue details and draws are on the College website.  This is always your first place to look for any Sport information.  Please also check the IGSA Spawtz page for any changes or wet weather updates  https://igsasport.spawtz.com/ .  Please do not call the IGSA office - always call the head coach or Ms Jacobs if you have any questions about sport.

Please make sure you have checked the College website for new team lists and numbers as some have changed, particularly netball.  IGSA is only using the indoor courts at Tempe this term, so we will have more travelling.  They are also not using Moore Park West this term for football.

Arrival times at venues:  Please make sure you leave enough time to get to your venue in the busy Sydney traffic, so you can be there 30 minutes prior to start time to allow enough time to sign on and warm up properly.  Please be mindful that the Covid and influenza viruses are still rampant in Sydney, so please do not share drink bottles or shake hands with the opposition - just do your three cheers.

All players must be in the full College Sport uniform, and please know that any non-Vinnies’ items will be confiscated.  All hockey and football players must have all their own protective equipment and cannot take the field without shin pads or mouth guards.  All netball players must remove all jewellery and have short fingernails.  No tape is to be used to cover earrings.

Good luck to all teams for round 2!

Fitness and Athletics Training

Fitness training continues on Monday and Wednesday afternoons and will now concentrate on more athletic events in preparation for the IGSA Carnival.  All levels of fitness will be catered for at the training sessions and are not just for those wanting to do athletics.  Any students wishing to improve their fitness/athletics are invited to come to one or both days.  Students meet outside the change rooms at 3.15pm and then head down to Rushcutters Bay on Mondays and will catch the bus to E S Marks on Wednesdays.  If it is wet they will do a fitness session in the gym or run under cover - so training is always on!

From the Inter-House events we ran at school, the athletics squad has been chosen and are currently training for the IGSA Carnival in Week 5.  If any students who train outside of school for athletics missed the trials due to illness or injury, please email Ms Jacobs to be added to the list.  However, we will be using theIGSA twilight meets on 5 and 12 August as the final selection of the College team for the IGSA Carnival on 19 August.  All students must come to both Friday night meets.

TERM 4 2022 and TERM 1 2023 SPORT REGISTRATIONS
