From the Principal, Mrs Anne Fry

Dear Parents and Carers

Yesterday was the 500th anniversary of St Ignatius of Loyola being shot in the leg by a cannon ball.  It was during his convalescence from this injury that he engaged in deep spiritual discernment.  His journal notes from this period became known as the Spiritual Exercises, and from this inauspicious beginning has grown an entire spiritual perspective known as Ignatian spirituality.  While the Jesuits are the most recognised Religious Congregation associated with Ignatian Spirituality, there are many other congregations who follow the same spiritual way of proceeding, including the Sisters of Charity.  We give thanks for the Sisters of Charity and all the great ministries they have undertaken with the spirit of Ignatius, and his insight that the presence of God is in all things.  This has taken them to the margins and their care of the poor and marginalised is much acclaimed in the history of the Catholic Church in Australia.  On Monday, our College will join in the national celebrations of 200 years of Catholic Education in Australia.  It is a great honour that St Vincent's College, represented by our Charism Captain Lucia Holt, has been invited to lead the procession of flags into the Cathedral on Monday.  We are the oldest congregational school in the Sydney Diocese.  God's presence will definitely be there in this grand celebration, but it has been equally present in the ordinary and extraordinary events of the week

-  the joy and spirit of the Athletics Carnival
-  the hospitality of the Boarders during the inaugural sleepover
-  the thoughtfulness, creativity and rigour of the Subject Selection Showcase for Year 10 students
-  the care and advocacy of our students for climate change
-  the wisdom of parents dealing with enormous challenges.

Catholic Education, Ignatian spirituality, the Sisters of Charity, have as their common element the good news of the Gospel.  This week we preached the Gospel with words and actions.

Yours sincerely

Anne Fry

From the Deputy Principal

It has been a good week.  Last week I wrote of the responsibilities we each have to contribute to a community and this week I give thanks for the array of activities that gathered and celebrated being a community.  It has been a week of cheer and colour - most of all people with people in good relationship.

Monday night’s Year 10 Subject Selection Showcase Evening saw our parents back on campus for the first time.  It was impressive to listen to the dialogue and interest shared by parents and carers with your daughters, partnering with teachers looking to equip students well to make discerning decisions for their future pathways.  On Tuesday night the Boarding House opened its doors to a day student sleepover - a new initiative that certainly pumped up the volume of curious conversations delighting in the Boarding way of life.  I think dance competition trumped the study that evening - but all were the richer for sharing in the life of others.  This was a great initiative of Ms O’Donoghue and the Boarding Representative Council hosted by our Boarding Co-Captains, Clare and Grace.  Wednesday we reached the climax of the week with our first Athletics Carnival in two years.  We couldn’t be more proud of our Year 12s who modelled an attitude of having fun in full colour costume while getting in and giving your best go.  So many of us have commented on the energy of participation that day.  A parent entering the oval smiled at the roar of cheering she could hear upon arrival - a sound we are so glad to have back.  None of this possible without the good cheer and commitment of our staff.  Thursday evening I was privileged to gather around a Boarding table once more, as 12 ex-student Boarders from many decades came for dinner - revelling in stories of affection and mischief.  The decades may change but the spirit does not.  Our Boarders were impressive hosts, delighting in conversation with these alumnae.  And today, we lunched on BBQ sausages to round off our celebration of National Boarding Week, and announced the Age and House Champions of the Carnival.  Our Friday 3.00pm bell was drowned by joyous applause as Williams House came in First Place, having not won a carnival for some years, the spark of delight and the addition of our newest recruits in Years 7 and 8 shows how community continues to evolve and transform.  Conversation, companionship and cheer - it has indeed been a good week to be in school.

From the Director of Teaching and Learning

Term 2 is always a busy, albeit shorter term for teaching and learning activities at the College.  Students are well and truly engaging with our learning framework as they seek active learning opportunities in their classes to inform, transform and empower their learning in a year in which we are asking students to commit to creating and responding generously to opportunities to learn and grow.  Year 7 are managing the first of their high school formal assessment activities beautifully and right through the Year groups to Year 12, students are demonstrating their commitment to give of their best academically whilst aiming to take optimal care of themselves personally.  Year 8 and Year 10 students are trusting their own inner wisdom and the expert advice for their teachers to guide the path for their future vocational pursuits and I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to those parents and students who attended the Subject Selection showcase last Monday evening.  It was such a positive evening, and I know that this must be a sign of good things to come for these courageous young women who will go on to great post-school destinations as the Class of 2023.

The Diverse Learning Team have been hard at work, finalising NAPLAN tests and offering individual, differentiated support to our students with additional learning needs.  I thank them all for their expert leadership in working hard to ‘hold the fort’ whilst Ms Alanna Rose, took some necessary medical leave. Learning Support has commenced their Reading Groups with some of the Year 7 students who have been identified with developing literacy levels.  These groups are highly successful in improving comprehension skills, fluency, decoding and word analysis.  The groups are small and students form strong bonds, supporting each other in reading aloud in a non-judgemental way.  These groups are just a small example of the expert care and learning support strategies that assist our girls to shine and reach the academic potential they are destined for at SVC.

This weekend I hope all of us take time out to enjoy the briskness of a glorious autumn day in Sydney and to our Year 12 students as you continue to put in your best efforts to study and prepare for the final assessments this term, please do take time out to be kind to yourselves and be reminded that it is the nurturing of your whole person, that matters most this year and throughout your lifelong learning journey.

Boarder Lines

National Boarding Week is always a highlight in our Boarding community and in 2021 we really celebrated being back together in residence.  The joys of the week always comes from showing which towns our Boarders come from and where they live at school.  This week’s events included lunchtime tours, a Tutor Map Challenge of NSW, netball game of Boarders vs Day Girls and a BBQ lunch raising funds for Rural Aid.  This was just the daytime events!  The night time events included dinner with SCEGGS staff, Trivia, and the two biggest events were the ‘Day Girl Sleepover’ on Tuesday night and dinner with Ex-Boarders’ on Thursday.  The photos show the involvement and sense of enthusiasm had by all.

Rural Aid was chosen as our fundraiser this year - as most people know they support Buy a Bale, but this year we chose to focus on the mental health support provided in rural communities.

A huge thank you to those who supported all of our events during the week.  And congratulations to Tutor 2 - Mr Bielinko - who won the Tutor Challenge. The entries provided a good insight into our Geography knowledge of NSW!!

Thank you to the Boarders and Boarding Staff for the busy week.  To Genevieve and Grace for the calm that they brought to the sleepover and to Mrs Anne Fry and Mrs Elizabeth Brooks for stepping in whilst I was unwell during the week.  We hope that the week has highlighted the resilience of our Boarders living away from home and the independence that is needed to live in residence.

We will continue to raise funds for Rural Aid throughout the year and we look forward to your support at that time.

Yours in Boarding

Year 9 Romeo and Juliet Incursion

Such Sweet Sorrow by Bell Shakespeare

Love, hate, humour and tragedy... Such Sweet Sorrow, the abridged version of Romeo and Juliet, has it all.  This week in Year 9 English, we were given the opportunity to follow three brilliant actors as they portrayed the love story of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with a modern twist.  A play about an age-old feud between two influential families and two young, Italian, star-crossed lovers whose devotion leads to their deaths, ultimately reconciling their feuding families.  Bell Shakespeare's modern adaptation allowed us to clearly understand the old language, character motivations and dramatic devices that make Shakespeare's plays so great.

Overall, I found that the casting was marvellous, especially having three actors who seamlessly slipped between characters and adapted to fit each role.  As far as the characterisation was concerned, the best performances came from Juliet and Tybalt, played by Eleni.  I particularly enjoyed how the actor powerfully portrayed Juliet's characteristics as a shy and innocent girl who later finds her inner strength, bravery, and wit.  I also enjoyed the way she kept in mind modern ideas, such as femininity which she expressed through her little snippets of analysis in each scene.  Her climactic representation of Tybalt, Juliet's feisty cousin, made us feel as if we ourselves were there, amongst the battle, caught between the two families whose realistic and action-packed fighting scenes left us hanging on the edge of our seats.

My favourite scene was when the two star-crossed lovers die beside one another because they would rather be with each other in death than living alone. Finally, the families realise the consequence of their feud and agree to reconcile.  I particularly enjoyed how the actors explained what Shakespeare conveys through the play's themes of love and violence.

Such Sweet Sorrow is a fantastic experience that kept us on the edge of our seats, from beginning to end.  I would highly recommend it to anyone in Years 7-10 wanting to better understand Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

The Patricia Rolfe Award

Each year at Speech Night, a Year 10 student with a talent in English and an interest in journalism receives the Patricia Rolfe Award.  The English Department would love to hear from any journalists in our College community who would be willing to share their expertise for a few minutes with Year 10. Some journalists may now still be working from home but that doesn’t mean that ‘visiting the classroom’ is impossible.  Through the magic of technology, we can make something happen!

I would really appreciate the generosity of any journalists who could help the English Department inspire this year’s recipient of The Patricia Rolfe Award: playousta@stvincents.nsw.edu.au

Year 8 Geography

On Wednesday 12 May, Year 8 students showcased their recent Geography assessment activity in the College Hall at lunchtime.  The assessment activity required students to create a model of a landform they had researched, and then integrate the model into an oral presentation in class in which they communicated processes and influences that form and transform places and environments.  The models included Mount Everest, The Great Barrier Reef, Jim Jim Falls and Mount Etna, just to name a few.  Overall, the models were of a very high standard, demonstrating exceptional creativity and attention to detail.

Congratulations to the Year 8 students, as it was clearly evident that they took enormous pride in their work and adopted a diligent approach to this assessment activity.  A special mention to Mr Ken Devlin and the Year 8 Geography teachers, Ms Barkho, Ms Hamilton and Ms Crotty, for their facilitation of the assessment activity and assistance in setting up the display.  Well done, Year 8!

Performing Arts News

Performing Arts students are often over in the Garcia building creating and rehearsing in every break they get, so it is extremely gratifying when their hard work and creativity is recognised.  This week we have seen some very, very impressive outcomes as our students represented the College in various competitions at regional heats across the City, beating many other school teams, and now proceeding to State Finals.

Shakespeare Carnival Regionals

The Shakespeare Carnival is an annual competition run by the professional and award-winning theatre company Sport for Jove.  Schools host their own in-school rounds to select who will represent their school at regionals.  We held performances of Shakespeare scenes, duologues and monologues over two lunchtimes in the MCR for a small but appreciative audience, and two groups were selected to represent SVC.

These two groups were very prepared and confident performers, so we would have been proud of them and their performances no matter what the outcome of the competition, but it is such a delightful surprise to congratulate our ensemble group Claire, Samara and Lulu, who came second in their section and are therefore now going through to the State finals.  What makes their win even more exciting, is that they competed against Year 12 students from other schools and still won even though they are juniors!  Well done Claire, Samara and Lulu, everyone is so excited for you and we wish you the very best at State.

Polly and Eleni also performed with great skill and creativity and came third, so also great performances representing the College with their excellent acting skills, but unfortunately will not continue to the State finals.

Senior Theatre Sports

Theatresports is another external Performing Arts competition that we have been competing in in recent years, and it is with great excitement that our College attended the senior Theatresports local heats at Waverley.  Competition is fierce and witty at these higher levels and it with great pleasure and pride that I am able to congratulate our senior team - Haylee, Ella and Grace.  These students came second out of eight teams beating Ascham, Scots, Waverley, Kambala and Loreto Kirribilli, taking them through to the semis!!  We wish these witty warriors the very best at State finals.

Intermediate Theatre Sports

As reported in last week’s Bulletin, our success has been on a roll with our intermediate team coming third out of eight - also taking them through to the finals, beating Redlands, Loreto Kirribilli and many other schools.  What made us extra proud of this team was their incredible grace under pressure, as the boys schools literally brought busloads of audience members to cheer their team members on, making for very tough rounds.  Despite the zealous cheering of the boys and the polite clap for our students, SVC students were witty and wildly clever and engaging performers.  Their ability to keep their energy and confidence up was awe-inspiring and many adults would have not been able to perform with such confidence and good grace under such pressure.  Well done Molly, Sophie, Stella and Polly.

A LITTLE SHAKESPEARE - COLLEGE PRODUCTION - BOOKINGS NOW OPEN

A Little Shakespeare - College Production 2021

It was with great excitement and some trepidation that we commenced auditions and rehearsing in separate Year groups for the College Production.  The work has been exciting, challenging and changed in the shadow of Covid - even recently being unable to rehearse the small parts that have singing and dancing - but we have continued creatively modifying and adapting.  I am excited for an audience to witness the talent of our students and the creative synergy that has culminated in A Little Shakespeare.

Please come and support these students and the work we have crafted at 7.00pm in the College Hall on 8, 9 and 10 June.

Important Sport Updates

IGSSA (Independent Girls Schools Sport Association) previously were an arm of the AHIGS (Association Head Independent Girls Schools) along with Archdale Debating, Festival of Speech etc.  AHIGS have now rebranded their association name to IGSA (Independent Girls Schools Association), and a lot of our Sport competitions and carnivals will now be called IGSA Sport.  This will just take us all a little while to get use to - just know until then, it's not a typo!

From Term 4 this year IGSA Sport will be offering sport for two terms, and we will not be entering as many external competitions like SEHA Hockey, UNSW Water Polo or Santa Sabina Basketball.  We will still, however, be entering in the ESTA Touch competition and possibly Volleyball and Futsal.  Instead, our students will be offered ESTA Touch, Water Polo and Tennis in Terms 4 and 1 and IGSA Netball, Hockey or Soccer in Terms 2 and 3.  More information about this will be given out next term.  Please contact Ms Jacinta Jacobs if you have any questions about these changes.

Cross Country

Congratulations to our three Year 7 runners who ran extremely well at the IGSA Carnival last week and placed first in the teams relay.  Congratulations to Emily Demetriou, Sybella Daly and Iyla TimminsEmily and Sybella have definitely qualified for the NSWCIS Carnival, and Iyla Timmins and Genevieve Young also made the IGSA team.  Well done, girls!

Fitness training with Tash will continue on Mondays at Rushcutters Bay, but training on Wednesdays will change to E S Marks Field from next week for the Athletics team.  Ms Jacobs will email all those who have qualified.  Anyone is welcome to come to the Monday sessions.

Inter-House Athletics Carnival

The highlight of the term was the inter-House Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 19 May at E S Marks Field.  What a wonderful day of competition it was!  The participation level was outstanding and we had some amazing results.  Congratulations to all competitors who did personal bests and a special mention to our record breakers, and to Lara Roets for winning the Invitational 100m in 12.85secs.

The College Athletics squad is chosen from this carnival, with one girl permitted to compete in each event at the IGSA Carnival at Homebush on 12 and 13 August, next term.  Fitness sessions on Wednesdays will now change to E S Marks Field, and all girls selected in the squad are to attend as many of these sessions as they can.  The College squad will compete in two lead up twilight meets at Homebush on Friday 30 July and 6 August and the final team will be chosen after that.  More information will be given to the team once selected.  Ms Jacobs will email all girls who have been selected soon.

TERM 2 SPORT

SEHA Hockey

Well done to all the students who turned up to training after the Athletics Carnival this week.  We are starting to see the results of the hard work at training, so keep up the good work.  We are hoping to have three similar teams for next term’s IGSA competition.  If you missed the registrations and still want to play, please email Laura or Ms Jacobs.

Ms Laura Wiggins
Head Hockey Coach

IGSA Basketball

Well done to all our basketball teams who have been training and competing quite well this season.  A special mention must go to SVC 3, who had a very exciting game, narrowly beating Kambala by one basket last weekend.  GO VINNIES!!

Ms Elyse Harmanis
Head Basketball Coach

IGSA Football

The football season is going quite well, although we are still having trouble with players turning up late to their games and teams having to start without a full team.  Can you please make every effort to arrive at the venue at least 20 minutes before start time to allow for a warm up and team-talk.  We all know how bad Sydney traffic and parking can be, so please don’t use this as an excuse.

Mr Hugo Forlico
Head Football Coach

St Catherine's Netball

Congratulations to all of our netball teams who have been performing well on Wednesday nights - this week in particular - as I am sure they were all exhausted from the Athletics Carnival.

Congratulations to Sophia Laing, Year 10, who was the recipient of one of the major club awards at Clovelly Surf Club last weekend.  Sophia enrolled in Nippers in the under 6 age group and participated right through the program.  She has also completed her Bronze Medallion this season.  Sophia was awarded the Geoff James (Senior) Memorial Trophy for Female Junior Club Person of the Year.  The citation spoke about her general contribution to junior activities and a rescue that she performed at Garie Beach as a volunteer.  In addition, Sophia was presented for her selection as the Club’s female junior representative at the SLSA Sydney Future Leaders camp only a few weeks ago.  Sophia was also a member of Patrol 9 - awarded Best Patrol for this season.  Well done, Sophia!

Congratulations to Lani Bresnahan, Year 12, who represented the under 18 girls for the Sydney Rebels in Orange, at the NSW Touch Regional Junior Championships two weeks ago.  Her team narrowly missed out on the semi-finals.  Last weekend Lani travelled to Coffs Harbour and represented Cronulla in the NSW Oztag State Championships in the under 20's mixed team.  They made the semi-finals, but unfortunately lost this game.  Well done, Lani!

Congratulations to our staff member Ms Jenny McCarthy, who was outstanding in her leadership at the Athletics Carnival, and supervised the hardest event, the high jump, superbly.  Her patience and commitment to running this event all day really was appreciated by the students and in particular, the athletes who broke records or did personal bests on the day.
