From the Principal, Mrs Anne Fry

Dear Parents and Carers

It was wonderful to see the Year 7 students depart for Camp on Wednesday.  It was a reminder of just how exciting the first year of secondary school is for our youngest students.  The weather has been perfect for them and I expect on their return this afternoon they will have grand tales of achievement to share with you over dinner.  An enormous thank you to Mrs Radford, and staff members - Mrs Brooks, Mr Grace, Ms Robson, Ms McKenna, Mr Bielinko, Mrs Bourke, Ms Doran, Ms De Prendegast, Mr Weaver.

We have now been able to reschedule all our Camps and Retreats after the deluge in Week 9 of Term 1.

Year 8 Camp:  15-17 November.

Year 9 Camp:  6-8 October.

Year 10 Camp:  6-8 October.

Year 11 Retreat:  6-8 September.

While retaining COVID readiness to accept change at short notice, it is with cautious optimism I think that students can now look forward to participating in their Camp/Retreat programs.

Another milestone in our journey out of COVID, is that our program of Subject Selection and Parent-Teacher Interviews will return to 'face to face'.  Thank you to those who participated in the survey.  The results were highly compelling but there was a slight preference for returning to 'actual' rather than virtual.  The dates for the Parent-Teacher Interviews are:

Monday 24 May:  Year 10

Monday 7 June:  Year 11

Tuesday 13 July:  Year 8

Monday 19 July:  Year 9

Monday 26 July:  Year 7.

The format will be 5 minute meeting slots scheduled from 3.30pm-7.30pm on the nominated dates.

I, along with Ms Maryanne O'Donoghue and many of the Boarding and College families, today attended the funeral of Mr Brian Mudford.  The depth of respect that Brian was held in by his family and community accompanied him to his grave.  It was a privilege to be there and be reminded of the great strength of rural communities, and how fortunate we are to be a College community that has benefited in so many ways from our connections to rural and regional New South Wales.

Yours sincerely

From the Deputy Principal

It was a real thrill to spend time with Year 7 on camp this week and witness their extension of relationships and learning.  Camp was met with much excitement - Year 7s still run and certainly make a lot of noise - they will indeed come home and back to school on Monday with stories of accomplishment and greater awareness of the strengths of themselves and their peers.

The opportunity to enjoy the outdoors in a beautiful setting is a boost to wellbeing and allows for the making of positive relationships and memories.  We deliberately shuffle our groupings to enable students to meet new faces.  A student commented to me that she had not met a student until she shared a cabin with her and now it feels like she has known her forever.  I watched girls observe and listen to each other as they opened up circles to be more inclusive whilst collaborating on their idea and design when creating a newspaper superhero; a shout out to ‘Mop-lady’ who was able to eradicate all coronavirus particles with a simple shimmy.  The challenges provided in the program extend students’ skills of critical thinking and innovation.  I watched a group divide in two in a Survivor challenge to cross a river (of bark) from opposing directions by placing four planks between tree trunks; it was at the half-way mark they discovered that the only way through was via the same middle trunk - how would they compete or negotiate?  The strategic thinking, leadership and team work also led to a reflection of what they may have done differently to enable both teams to achieve their goal. And for those feeling like a particular challenge - the exhilaration of pulling the chord on the Goliath swing to the chanting of your group’s countdown - 3, 2, 1 … and swoop into the air and made one feel truly alive.  All this in sunshine and blue skies.  A good few days it was indeed!

I add my appreciation to the teachers who accompanied Year 7; it is only with their generous leadership, commitment of care and bountiful good humour that we can provide such experiences for our students. I hope all involved - adolescents and adults enjoy a deserved sleep tonight.

Learning brings more than just an opportunity to gain essential knowledge and demonstrate necessary skills.  It’s an opportunity for personal growth.  As we continue this semester to ‘respond generously to opportunities to learn and grow’, as a learning community we share high expectations and responsibilities for learning.  We seek to grow a culture of relationships that enable optimal learning for all in our community.  By nurturing relationships of mutual respect and responsibility, we will together support students to learn the competence to be ready for life in an ever-changing 21st century world. Learning is a relational activity, underpinned by relationships of trust, inclusivity, responsibility.  We aspire to energise and clarify the conditions and actions needed to demonstrate effective learning so that all learning experiences are possibilities for growth.

This coming Wednesday, the Heads of Department and I look forward to the opportunity to be in conversation with your daughters about the contributions they are making in their learning to help actualise our learning goals.  We will engage Year 7 in a pre-assessment preparation session, through reminders of healthy habits of mind and study strategies.  Years 9 and 11 will engage in a learning ‘pulse check’ and we look forward to hearing from the students, what they are finding rewarding and what they are finding challenging in these two critical stages of the learning continuum.  We look forward to future opportunities where we can showcase examples of your daughters reflective feedback on their own learning as we are very proud of the students’ tenacity and determination in closely examining marking feedback and setting goals with their teachers to improve and grow.  Students thus are epitomising what it means to be ‘courageous women of action’, as despite the newness of our ‘feedback before marks’ approach as I mentioned in my last article, the students are demonstrating positivity and openness to the approach.  In this way, students are not only authentically demonstrating their capacity to be reflective learners, but we are finding a more focussed understanding and resonance of the constructive teacher feedback.  Students are recognising the gains that can be made in learning when students can see what they know and be guided and inspired to find out what they don’t know.  As teachers we will continue to explore ways to challenge students to be proactive, resilient and determined in their learning, heed powerful assessment feedback from teachers, set goals and respond generously to opportunities to learn and grow’.

On Wednesday 5 May the official launch of ‘Subject Selection Season’ for our Years 8 and 10 students will occur when Heads of Department engage these cohorts at the Year Assemblies to discuss the process of Elective Choices (Years 9 and 10 2022/2023) and Selection of Stage 6 Courses (Years 11 and 12 2022/2023).  To ensure that you as parents as well as our students, receive detailed and specific information of the course requirements and your daughter’s suitability for certain courses, we have arranged a Subject Selection Information Evening, as previously communicated, on Monday 17 May from 3.30pm to 7.00pm.  The evening provides opportunities for you to meet with the individual Head of Departments and some of their course specialist colleagues, to ensure that you have a full understanding of the demands of each course, so that your daughter’s interest in studying the course is matched by specific advice from these experts to ensure your daughter’s suitability for each course.  More specific information about this evening will be published shortly.  The Year 10 Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews are scheduled on the College calendar for Monday 24 May from 3.30pm.  Soon you will be invited to book Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews online to receive valuable feedback about your daughter’s learning thus far.  As we at SVC pride ourselves in knowing our students, each teacher knows your daughter’s specific strengths and talents.  You as parents know her best, so we invite you to instigate conversations at home with your daughter regarding her aspirations for her Stage 6 courses and her dreams for her future. In particular, you may wish to consider asking her what I like to refer to as the three wise questions:

What do you like studying?  Where do your natural talents lie?  Where would you like to challenge yourself?

A reminder that in Week 3, Year 7 and Year 9 students will complete the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) Online. The tests will be conducted from Wednesday 12 May to Monday 17 May.  Provision will be made for students who are absent on a test day to sit a catch-up test within the week of testing up to and including Tuesday 18 May.  Students will be reminded to bring a fully charged laptop each testing day and lessons as per usual will continue after the NAPLAN tests each day.

Finally - big news for our Year 12 cohort yesterday, with the release of their personal HSC timetables.  There were squeals of delight for some students whose last subjects weren't being examined on the last day of the HSC timetable, yet for some students I know they have some examinations stacked up in a week.  Unfortunately, as a College we have naught to do with the placement of NESA’s HSC examinations on the calendar, yet we know that this very sensible and resilient Year 12 cohort are taking their preparation seriously and in good humour.  I will address the Year 12 students on Wednesday to give them my advice about the journey ahead in their Trial and HSC final preparations, keeping the perspective that there are still 50% of their marks to come in each of their courses from the final external examinations.  I cannot believe how quickly this cohort's final year is progressing and as a College community we continue to extend our support and blessings on them as they continue to impeccably respond generously to opportunities to learn and grow’.

The staff of SVC do Vinnies Night Patrol once a month.  We are a great bunch of people.  On Tuesday night we stopped at a new ‘spot’ in Eastlakes; there were 30 people waiting patiently for us to serve them sandwiches, delicious homemade muffins made by our students, a snack-pack to get them through the next day and share a laugh over a cuppa.  We met our old friends at the previous two stops; it was good for Jody to get stuck into the banter with Ray the football supporter, who, according to Jody, is supporting the wrong team, and it was good to be remembered by Terry.  At our third stop we met ‘Brendan’ an 11 year old with the best manners in the world.  He was very happy to get a sandwich, a cup of Milo and a muffin for his lunchbox tomorrow. When I asked if he would like a second muffin for tomorrow, his response was delightful and told a deeper story of his life: “Yes please!  Then I can share!”.  It was good for him to have something in his lunchbox that he was proud to offer others.  That’s going to stay with me for a while.

We are starting up a Sandwich Project.  Students are invited to sign up via the link below, make sandwiches after school and the teachers will offer them to our clients on Night Patrol.

Sandwich Project

If parents would like to help out with our sandwich making project, we’d love you to ‘fund a filling’ by donating Woolworths Gift Cards so we can pop down the road and buy our ingredients.  Every 4th Tuesday of the month we will need 20 loaves of bread, ham, cheese, egg, lettuce, vegemite and tuna to get the sandwich process going.  I’ve just learned that Woollies offer e-gift cards - that makes the whole thing a lot easier.  If you can help out, that would be great.  Gift cards can come to Mrs Dianne Forster in Reception and any e-vouchers can be emailed straight to me.  kenderesj@stvincents.nsw.edu.au

SNACK PACK PERFECTION

Students are also invited to make up ‘Snack Packs’ for us to take out to our clients.  Each snack pack should contain five items in a ziplock bag:

1 popper juice

1 can of tuna or a cup-a-soup sachet or pack of instant noodles.

Plus any three of the following:

Le Snack/Cheese Dippits

Packet of chips or popcorn

Little box of sultanas

Fruit cup

Single serve pack of biscuits (Tiny Teddies)

Muesli bar (nut free) - chewy bars as many of our clients have dental problems.

Students are invited to make up the Snack Packs at home and bring them into Reception at any time.  Dianne will make sure I get them into the car for our Night Patrol.  We give out 150 snack packs each week.  Where I live, we make Snack Packs in a little production line.  It’s fun.

Some weeks ago I was horrified to hear that homelessness and hunger in the Woy Woy area is drastically increasing.  Young people are at particular risk, and with the weather getting colder it’s going to get very difficult.  There is no Vinnies Night Patrol in that area.  Why? They don’t have access to a van.  You can see in the photo that the Night Patrol vans are ‘kitted out’ which costs substantially more than your average Tarago.  St Vincent de Paul tell me that they have people ready and willing to provide and serve the food, but finding funding for a van is proving too much for them.  Vinnies says the need in the Sydney area continues to grow, so they can’t take a van from Sydney and send it to Woy Woy.  Vinnies is looking for a sponsor.  The current economic climate is proving challenging for many businesses and families, but perhaps we know someone who could help out?  Let me know if you do.

Next Monday afternoon Year 7's and 8's are invited to spend some time learning more about Ignatian spirituality and doing some sharing and reflecting. Ignatian spirituality is our way of engaging in the challenges and joys of living.  It embraces the challenge, formed by St Ignatius of Loyola, of Finding God in all things.  Students are invited to attend one or both afternoons, Monday 3 May and Monday 10 May, 3.15pm-4.30pm.

And coming on May 14 and beyond… Finding God in the Dark; a series of encounters for Years 11 and 12, where we will watch some challenging and groundbreaking movies.  We will be asking questions, laughing, crying and trying to work out what it all means in the space between.  It will also involve popcorn - which is a win.

We are preparing for Sorry Day on 26 May.  I have so much more to tell you.  Perhaps there will be room next week.

The Waverley Youth Art Prize encourages creativity in young artists from across Sydney.  It is open to anyone aged between 9-18 years old who are living in, studying or even simply, who plays in Sydney’s east.  All artworks are hung so that each artist will get to experience the joy of exhibiting and see an audience appreciate their work.  Young artists also go in the running to receive encouragement awards including art packs and vouchers to attend classes at local institutions such as the National Art School.

Each year the Waverley Youth Art Prize has a different theme for which artists create their work in response.  In 2021 the theme is:  We are Family - Ancestors, Bloodlines and Belonging.

Artworks are accepted across a broad range of mediums including drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and video/film/new Media. IMPORTANT SPORT UPDATES

IGSSA (Independent Girls Schools Sport Association) previously were an arm of the AHIGS (Association Head Independent Girls Schools) along with Archibald Debating, Festival of Speech etc.  AHIGS have now rebranded their association name to IGSA (Independent Girls Schools Association), and a lot of our Sport competitions and carnivals will now be called IGSA Sport.  This will just take us all a little while to get use to - just know until then, it's not a typo!

From Term 4 this year IGSA Sport will be offering sport for two terms, and we will not be entering as many external competitions likeSEHA Hockey, UNSW Water Polo or Santa Sabina Basketball.  We will still, however, be entering in the ESTA Touch competition and possibly Volleyball and Futsal.  Instead, our students will be offered ESTA Touch, Water Polo and Tennis in Terms 4 and 1 and IGSA Netball, Hockey or Soccer in Terms 2 and 3.  More information about this will be given out next term.  Please contact Ms Jacinta Jacobs if you have any questions about these changes.

Attention Vinnies Saturday Sport Families

In honour of Mother's Day weekend, next Saturday 8 May is going to be the FIRST EVER #SVCMUMSATSPORT DAY!

Shout out to the Mums, carers and significant women in our Vinnies girls' lives - Remember to take a photo with your girls before you leave home, at drop off or at the sport venue.  Then have your Vinnies girl tag her Sport/Year level and email it to our Comms and PR Captain, Matilda Emery so she can post it to our Instagram’s SVCMums page.  We look forward to seeing lots of photos!

Cross Country

The IGSA Cross Country Carnival will be held in Week 3 on Friday 7 May at Frensham.  Final training sessions with Tash will be on Monday and Wednesday 3.15pm-4.30pm from the College.  The bus will now be leaving Victoria Street at 6.00am on the Friday, so please make sure you are on time and have plenty of warm gear.

All runners competing in this event need to have the correct running singlet (Nbr 21), navy blue shorts or leggings/bike pants and good running shoes to compete at this event.  Touch/Basketball singlets can be worn as long as we add the number 21 to it.

After the Athletics Carnival on 19 May, trainings on Wednesdays will change to E S Marks Field and Mondays will remain at Rushcutters Bay.  All IGSA cross country permission notes must be returned to Ms Jacobs by Monday 13 May, at the latest.

The highlight of the term will be the Inter-House Athletics Carnival which is being held on Wednesday 19 May.  All students are encouraged to compete in as many events as possible for their House and need to enter events on their House Google ClassroomGirls wishing to compete in the first event, the 800m, are to be on the first bus.

The inter-House 1500m will be held at fitness training on Monday 17 May, and any girls interested in competing for their House must register with Ms Jacobs via email.  There is also a copy of the carnival program and records on the noticeboard for those who would like to get prepared for the carnival.  Relay teams will be selected at the next House meetings.

The College Athletics Team is chosen from this carnival, with one girl permitted to compete in each event at the IGSA Carnival at Homebush on 12 and 13 August next term.  Fitness sessions on Wednesdays will change to E S Marks after our carnival and all girls selected in the squad are to attend as many of these sessions as they can.  The College team will compete in two lead up twilight meets at Homebush on Friday 30 July and 6 August.  More information will be given to the team once selected.

TERM 2 SPORT

St Vincent’s has entered three teams in the SEHA hockey competition for our final year in this competition.  Good luck to all teams for their first games this Saturday.

All teams train on Wednesday afternoons at David Phillips Field at Daceyville, from 4.00pm-5.00pm.  All information can be found on the College website.  Please make sure that all players have shin pads, hockey stick and mouthguard for all training sessions and matches.  The bus leaves at 3.15pm from Victoria Street and will return to the College at approximately 5.30pm

Please Note:  If students are being picked up from the field - it must be at 5.00pm, otherwise they have to go back to the College on the bus as we cannot leave any student unattended. If you cannot attend training for any reason you must email Ms Jacobs and Laura.  This week we had too many unexplained absences - in particular Year 11's.

Ms Laura Wiggins
Head Hockey Coach

St Catherine's Netball

St Catherine’s School Netball competition commenced on Wednesday 28 April.  SVC is fielding 17 teams, displaying just how committed our students are to netball. All teams did really well in their first matches with some very close score lines.  A reminder that all players are to arrive at the venue 20 minutes before start time for warm-up - many players unfortunately, were late this week.

You will find all netball information on the College website under LEARNING/ SPORT/NETBALL

TERM 3 SPORT

Sport Registrations are now open for Term 3 Sport.  If you wish to play IGSA Netball, IGSA Hockey or Ascham 5-A-Side Football, you must go onto the College website and register before 3.00pm on Friday 14 May.  There is NO EXCUSE TO BE LATE.  If you have problems with online registrations, please see Ms Jacobs with your computer.

PLEASE NOTE:  Term 3 is the last term where you will be allowed to play a Sport for just one term. From Term 4 all Sport will run for two terms:

Touch, water polo, volleyball and tennis will run in Terms 4 and 1

Basketball, hockey, netball and football will run in Terms 2 and 3.

IGSA Netball

Notes about the IGSA Competition:  As the St Vincent's College netball page explains: If your daughter plays for RNA (Randwick Netball Association) or another association, please do not register for SVC Netball Club if game times may clash and SVC is your second priority.  If SVC priority is equal with another club priority, then enrol your daughter and we will make it work.  Sometimes it’s best to choose one or the other, so that your daughter isn't overloaded with commitments.

IGSA game times are from 8.00am-11.00am, last game concluding at 11.50am.  We do not know the time of games until the July school holidays. Traditionally, seniors are scheduled for 8.00am/9.00am; Juniors - 9.00am/10.00am; Year 7 - 10.00am/11.00am.

IGSA netball is a big commitment for parents with travel involved all around Sydney.  Once teams are formed we try to share the travel - especially for transport of Boarding students.  The fun part is discovering all the amazing school grounds around Sydney!

Ms Elyse Harmanis
Head Netball Coach
