From the Principal, Mrs Anne Fry

Dear Parents and Carers

We head a 'wonderful Wednesday' this week, with an impressive panel of our ex-students from the Class of 2021 talking to our Year 10 and Year 12 students.  The panelists shared with wisdom and maturity how they had successfully navigated their way through their HSC years (despite the anticipated and many unexpected hurdles of 2020/2021).  I could not have been more proud of the panel.  We were all the richer and wiser after listening to their presentations.  Their strategies very much aligned with our value of Hope, and being personally committed to making the small changes needed to fulfil our aspirations.

On Wednesday afternoon we 'opened' the College to the prospective Year 7 students of 2023 and 2024 (the graduating classes of 2028 and 2029).  Like all current events we had to plan with caution around the weather and Covid, and at the last minute had to make some modifications.  As it turned out, the first drops of rain fell as the last guests left the campus.  The open afternoon was an authentic statement of who we are - no 'bells and whistles' just an opportunity to see who we are and what we do every day!  My deep appreciation goes to Mrs Robyn Pedley (our Registrar), Mr Bob Anderson (Director of Teaching and Learning), the Heads of Department, staff members and the 'super-stars' of the afternoon, the Year 10 guides, who shared their stories with the prospective families as they guided them around the campus.  The feedback from parents and applicants was positive - they got a glimpse of that Vinnies' spirit and they loved it.  Thank you also to the many parents who clearly are being 'super-spreaders' of the best kind - spreading good news and advocacy for the College.  Many of our prospective families were here purely on the strength of a recommendation from a current family.  Thank you.

Next week the camp and retreat program will run Wednesday to Friday.  To say this has been a fraught process would be an understatement, as we adjust every day to the exact number of students and staff impacted by Covid.  This is HOPE in action - changing to meet the objective of getting our students back into the beauty of the bush, the contemplation of their retreats and the joy of community.  Mrs Brooks is leading the program with meticulous planning and unflagging optimism!  May her efforts and the efforts of so many be rewarded with fine weather, high spirits and deep gratitude.

In hope,

Yours sincerely

From the Deputy Principal

We pray a Prayer for Generosity often at our College.  Whilst it is often thought this prayer was written by St Ignatius, it actually appeared as ‘The Scout’s Prayer’ in a French Boy Scout manual.  It expresses a whole-hearted commitment to be people of Christ with a readiness for hard work with a generous spirit.  I feel its expression in action brings us to a place of hope.

Wednesday brought together for us our past and our future and by doing so illuminated the present.  Five of our Alumnae of the Class of 2021 returned to share their experience and wisdom with our senior students - Years 10 and 12, and filmed for Year 11.  They were asked to reflect upon their approach to their schooling as senior students and share strategies for effective learning.  It was a privileged conversation to listen to the intentional choices these students made and to share in the joys of their discoveries about themselves and their cohort peers and teachers that they realise were so crucial to their success as young people.  I share with you some of their key insights:

  •  choose your mindframe - make a choice about your attitude and actions
  •  maintain consistency to work smarter not harder
  •  set yourself goals so you have something to strive for
  •  it's ok to not feel motivated all of the time, but find ways to lift yourself back
  •  know yourself, trust yourself - know how to get the best out of yourself.

Thank you sincerely to Lucia Holt, Maddie Neill, Georgia Jones, Amelia McPherson and Lani Bresnahan for your generosity and commitment to the students of St Vincent’s College; we look forward to hearing of your continued journeys of learning and discovery.

That afternoon we opened the gates to welcome prospective students, with parents and carers, who will be potential graduates of the Classes of 2028 and 2029. Their enthusiasm was a refreshing reminder of the perceived goodness of what happens here at the College and not having had the opportunity to host such an occasion for two years it was indeed a welcome dialogue.  These 10 and 11 year olds had their questions ready and it appeared their roller skates on to grace every corner of the school with their excitement.

As is our way, we believe the most authentic sharing of who we are and what we are about is in relationship and in the doing.  And so many of our current students were hosts and students demonstrating the learning that occurs across the full academic curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities.  Here lies the moment of illumination.  This opportunity to reflect and consider what matters, what excites, how learning impacts on the formation of mind and character provided a refreshing energy and insight to current students.  The expression of pride in themselves and of the College was palpable.  The Year 10 students who chose to be your guides were exemplary!  They demonstrated wisdom and maturity but most importantly intention to step up and into being a generous student committed to her learning and community.  In speaking with Year 10s that afternoon, many commented on the positive provocation in listening to the insights of the Class of 2021.  I acknowledge and thank the many parents of these students who stayed at school on Wednesday afternoon.  Your recognition that your daughter’s learning is also about giving back is appreciated but what I hope you heard was also a growth moment for her.

I link this to our students’ preparation for camps and retreats next week and ask you as parents and carers to take the opportunity for dialogue with your daughter.  What does she anticipate?  How will she choose to participate?  What are her hopes for the experience in terms of her own growth?  And how might she positively contribute to the experiences of others?

Generosity of spirit is more than a disposition.  It is a choice followed by intentional action to contribute and impact upon another.  Learning is not passive - it will not just happen by showing up.  Our Generosity in a learning environment recognises both our strengths and vulnerabilities with a willingness to accept challenge.  In doing so we open ourselves to deepening our intersections with peers and deepening the learning experience.  Our generosity ignites hope for ourselves and others.  I believe St Vincent’s College is enriched by the generosity of many and our students now and the future have every good reason to hope in what grows from their learning.

Finally, I draw your attention to the letter sent today regarding our Covid risk mitigation for our Camps and Retreats.  Please read this letter carefully - sent by smithml@stvincents.nsw.edu.au - receipt of this letter assumes your awareness of and agreement with the responsibilities of students and parents/carers.  We ask that parents ensure students take a rapid antigen test on Tuesday evening 29 March before our departure Wednesday 30 March and agree to keep students at home where they test positive.  If you require another RAT, please ask your daughter to collect from Student Services.  In addition to emailing collegesecretary@stvincents.nsw.edu.au as is usual practice for all absences, please complete this Parent Reporting of non-attendance due to Illness on Tuesday evening / Wednesday morning if this is the case, so that we may amend our details prior to school opening.  For students who will be finishing their time in isolation over these days or unable to attend camp due to injury, there is an alternate program operating at school - students may wear casual clothes to this program and are to meet in the College Library each morning at 8.00am.

May we all seek ways to be generous of spirit and generate hope over the coming week.  And may we consider with gratitude the many opportunities we have to learn and grow.

Lord, teach me to be generous,

to serve you as you deserve,

to give and not to count the cost,

to fight and not to heed the wounds,

to toil and not to seek for rest,

to labor and not to look for any reward,

save that of knowing that I do your holy will.

From the Director of Teaching and Learning and Education Administration

“The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice.” - Brian Herbert

This week has been a genuine milestone week for learning in Term 1, with a particular emphasis on the practicalities of studying and organising.  On Wednesday we were most fortunate to have five members of the Class of 2021 return to the College to give insights and reflections on their senior experience.  The students represented the diversity of interests and talents that St Vincent's students have in abundance.  Maddison Neill, Lani Bresnahan, Amelia McPherson, Lucia Holt and Georgia Jones, shared their journey through the senior years and provided insight into what served them well in achieving success.  This was a valuable experience for the two Year groups who could assemble in the Hall, and will be shared with all students in the coming weeks as part of our study skills and organisation work that will reach out to all students across the College.

Year 11 have spent time refining the process of their study regime and looking at skills or organising themselves and setting goals as part of their senior journey.  Year 8 began the process of looking at organisation and what study actually is, with Mrs Cartmer and Mr Latham.  Other Years' will rotate through these programs, each session tailored to the particular cohort.  The experience of having started their learning journey for the year provides experience for reflection and personal evidence of what is working and what needs attention.  A signature idea of this year has been that small changes can result in big differences and this is certainly evident in learning.

On Wednesday prospective future St Vincent's students had the opportunity to not only visit the site and experience the atmosphere of the College, but also to tour the diversity and richness of the learning within the College.  Their guides were Year 10 students, who spoke with enthusiasm of their insight into their own experience, and were honest and positive ambassadors.  Different department displays featured students from other Years demonstrating skills in a huge variety of areas.  I would like to publicly express my gratitude for the spirit into which these students volunteered to stay back after their school day and share the excitement of their Vinnies' experience with future Vinnies' families.  I would also like to express my gratitude and pride in the staff who created the displays and experiences of the Open Afternoon.

Boarder Lines

An In Weekend in the Boarding House always brings about new friendships for all Boarders and lots of fun.  With a storm looming on Friday night, we took a chance to enjoy a few hours at Luna Park.  New rides brought lots of excitement and for our first off-site activity in two years, the staff and Boarders were happy to bring back some normalcy to our lives.  After dealing with some queasy stomachs brought on by those topsy-turvy rides (which they just love!) and lots of laughter and stories from the rides, we missed the storm by ten seconds!  Thankfully our bus driver was in the right place just at the right time.

Ms Laliotis kindly donated her time and her amazing skills to help us create resin crosses just in time for the Easter break.  As you can see from the pictures, the Boarders were enthralled in learning a new technique and creating really pretty crosses.  Thank you Ms Laliotis, for giving up your Sunday morning to do this with us - we really appreciate it!

In the last couple of years we have celebrated International Women’s Day by reading stories of strong, independent women who we may not know the stories of.  Below are a few pictures of the books being read during dinner and the book reports given after it, which gave great insight into how these women contributed to the world in general.  The Year of Hope, that St Vincent’s College is celebrating this year, ties in really well to IWD reminding us all that with hope and good intent we can be strong and courageous women - women who speak their mind and will stand up for injustice - women who encourage others to be the best that they can be each and every day.

With camp week approaching, our SCEGGS Boarders are looking forward to the peace and quiet for a few days whilst we’re out camping and reflecting.  A reminder to all parents/carers, to please fill in 'End of Term Leave' on Orah Boarders’ Travel Day is Friday 8 April and we will close the Boarding House by 6.00pm that evening.

Yours in Boarding

Year 8 PDHPE R - Cultural Food Day

Student Report

We have been studying healthy foods in class looking at food labels, the nutrients present in our food, how to reduce food waste in our homes and the amount of sugar that is present in food.

To explore food choices further, we researched the cultural influence on our food choices.  In groups of two or three the class made a wide variety of food with a chosen cultural significance, ranging all the way from sushi from Japan to lamingtons from our very own country, Australia.  We wrote about the significance of these foods for the country they come from, and where they came from, eating as much as we wished during class.  Some of these foods included stroopwafels from the Netherlands, Mars Bar slice from England and Australia, matcha cupcakes and cookies from Japan, gyoza and sushi from Japan, focaccia sandwiches from Italy, loukoumades from Greece and cream horns from Austria.  We collaborated on all of our food choices and created a recipe book for our class.

Written by Sophie Anderson, Year 8

Year 7 PDHPE Lessons Report

Over the past seven weeks we have learnt so much in both theory and practical lessons.  We are excited for every lesson we have, but let us go into a bit more detail.

We have been timed while racing down the pool swimming breaststroke, freestyle and butterfly.  We have been very excited every time we see we have a practical lesson so we can swim and try and beat our own times.  It’s a lot of fun to have a practical lesson because we get to jump in the cool pool and sometimes if we have time, play fun racing games.  We also are playing mini games of water polo.  It is also fun if it is raining because then we get to go to the gym and play Newcombe ball and sometimes even do 'Just Dance'.  We can’t wait till the swimming and athletics carnivals come up so we can swim and compete for our Houses.

When we had a theory lesson, we learnt about the five dimensions of health (physical, emotional, spiritual, social and mental).  Then we learnt about what happens during  puberty, and now for the last two weeks we have been informed about the menstrual cycle and female and male reproductive systems/body parts.  We have been looking at how we all grow and change at different stages in our lives and we are currently looking at menstrual products and how to use them.

SVC College Production 2022 - Matilda!

Rehearsals are progressing well on Thursday afternoons.  Students are getting to know each other - with drama games and some Matilda related improvisation to get everyone ready to work together and understand the value of ensemble work.  Then we started learning another dance that is a big main dance - Loud - which is a different style of dancing.  Also, Mr Paul began working on some main songs.  Please enjoy some of the captured moments - you can see a lot of Trunchbowl moments!

Year 11 Drama Play 2022 - The Witches!

What an exciting project for our Year 11 Drama class.  Students pitched their projects to the class and we all voted.  This is a great way for students to learn The Elements of Production.  They also learn a lot about project management and working with others.  Problem-solving is also a big part of making theatre happen in the real world, not just theorising about it.  This particular Year 11 class has really elevated the standard with students rehearsing scenes for the pitch, as well as really interesting and engaging pitches.  Voting was difficult and the numbers were very close.  Now the process is finished, 'The Witches' won.  Now the SVC community can look forward to the Year 11 Drama play - 'The Witches' in the College Hall next term.  Please see the great pitches in the photos.

Congratulations to Hannah Fenely, Year 11 Drama Student

Hannah was in the College Bulletin at the beginning of the year when she was awarded an external Drama program, however, she has now also been awarded a writing scholarship:  Oxbridge Paris Program for Creative Writing - for Exceptional Merit Scholarship.  We will all look forward to reading more of Hannah's writing.

Following this is a Music update from our new senior Music teacher, Mr Jim McCrudden.  He is ensuring our Music students are having fun and engaging with Music and music in our context.  Please enjoy his update and the photos of our Music students.

Music News

Throughout these ever-changing times this term, Music has remained a welcome constant.  Our ensembles offer our students the opportunity to make music together with old friends and new, while fostering resilience, musicality and well-being.  The orchestra has dusted off their instruments and filled the MCR with Mozart and Dvorak (and some ABBA thrown in for good measure - Mamma Mia!).

We welcome back Ms Irina Andreeva - who is putting the string ensemble through their paces on Thursday afternoons with a rich and varied repertoire.  Under the watchful eye and listening ear of Mr James Paul, the choir has been growing steadily every Wednesday morning in the College Hall.  New members are always welcome!  Meanwhile, lunchtime comes alive with the multiple rock bands thrashing it out in the many practice rooms of the Garcia building.  If you have any questions about the Music ensemble programs, please contact Mr McCrudden at the College  james.mccrudden@stvincents.nsw.edu.au .

Taking advantage of the better weather, Year 7 took to the grounds of Garcia to work on their latest project, Indigenous storytelling with a percussion instrument.  Students devised their own notation system, recorded their voices and added a mixture of percussion instruments and found objects such as zippers, velcro, water bottles - anything creative!

Water Polo

We have been lucky that most water polo teams have still had their matches on Saturday mornings as most are indoors.  Water polo does usually still go ahead regardless of weather.  It may be cancelled only if there is lightning or a problem at the venue, for example, the Dawn Fraser Pool in Balmain is tidal and is often closed after lots of rain due to pollution.

This is the final round before the finals, so good luck to all teams!

Swimming sessions have now concluded for the term.  We may start this up again in Term 4 if we have enough interest.

Fitness and Cross Country

Fitness training with Tash is on every Monday and Wednesday afternoon as we prepare for the IGSA Cross Country Carnival at Frensham on Friday 13 May in Term 2.  We are allowed to enter up to ten competitors in each age group and this acts as the St Vincent’s Cross Country Championships, as first girl finished from each age group will be awarded our Age Champion.  We would like to have a minimum of three per age group for the relay point scores, so we are looking for more competitors.  12 and 13 years only run 3km, with all other girls doing 4km except 18 years who have to do 6km.

All levels of fitness will be catered for at the training sessions and are not just for those wanting to do cross country.  Any students wishing to improve their fitness are invited to come to one or both days.  Please email Ms Jacobs if you would like to sign up.  Students meet Tash outside the change rooms at 3.15pm.  If it is wet they will do a fitness session in the gym.

SPORTS STAR OF THE WEEK

Congratulations to Ali Green, in Year 8, who has been selected in the Para-Matildas soccer squad.  Ali has been used widely in the advertising campaign and we wish her all the best for final selections!

Congratulations to our Swimming Team, who had some fantastic performances at the IGSA Carnival on Friday.  As mentioned earlier in this article, special mention must go to new Year 9 swimmer, Jana Kowalski, who qualified fastest for her first 50m freestyle IGSA final (also making other finals) and won the 100m freestyle!  Also, more great results and special congratulations to Ali Green who won four medals - three silver and a bronze. Well done everyone.
