From the Principal, Mrs Anne Fry

Dear Parents and Carers

Happy St Patrick's Day to the many families who share Irish heritage (and the many more who wished they did!).  The Australian Catholic Church was built from the early foundations by Irish congregations who came to the early settlements.  I acknowledge the hurt created through the actions of individuals within those congregations, and the inertia of the many more who allowed such wrong-doings to remain unchallenged.  It would also be wrong to not acknowledge the enormous contribution of the many fine, selfless women and men who have ministered in education, health, social advocacy and parishes, since their earliest days of the Catholic Church in Australia.  On this great feast day, our College was represented by staff and students of Irish heritage at a mass celebrated at St Mary's Cathedral by Bishop Terry Brady.  It is an opportune moment to thank the Sisters of Charity for their outstanding contribution to the social capital of Australia.  Their early work here in Australia was in prison ministry, education and health.  They have evolved as they responded to the sign of the times.  The Sisters of Charity famously and courageously set up the first specialised ward for nursing HIV/Aids patients in the 1980's and strongly advocated for the setting up of safe-injecting rooms.  In Kings Cross/Darlinghurst the two bookends of the neighbourhood are the Hospital and the College.  Through the intercession of St Patrick we pray they both continue to be beacons of justice and inclusivity.

Today 18 March, is the 7th anniversary of Mary Aikenhead being declared venerable.  This is an important stage in the journey towards being recognised as a Saint of the Roman Catholic Church.  Mary Aikenhead, Foundress of the Religious Sisters of Charity, lived from 1787-1858.  She lived long enough to know of the establishment of our College founded on 1 May 1858.  In her lifetime, she pioneered the apostolistic work for religious women (as compared to the enclosed convent).  She and her Sisters gave to the poor for love what the rich could afford to buy for money.  Now her ministries extend around the world offering an outreach of care.  We commend Mary Aikenhead as a person of heroic virtue worthy of sainthood.

Prayer for the Beatification of Venerable Mary Aikenhead

Compassionate and bountiful God, if it be Your will,
we ask You to enable us to promote the holiness
of Mary Aikenhead.
We ask for the grace to continue to make her love of Christ
and of the poor known throughout the world.
Grant that we may be encouraged by the Church to offer
her public honour as one of Your saints.
We ask this in the name of Jesus, Your Son.

Amen

In hope,

Yours sincerely

Extended Day Program Timings

Our students are thoroughly enjoying being enriched through the conversation, mentoring and tutoring of our Extended Day program.  Ms O'Connor is a very skilled educator and is making real connections with the students.

What I ask now, is that parents understand how important it is to note the program finishes at 6.00pm.  Ms O'Connor is not able to accompany and wait with students at the gate at any other finishing time.  Also, please note, if your child is not able to attend after you have booked her in, please notify Ms Francine Shanahan ( collegesecretary@stvincents.nsw.edu.au ) at Student Services during the day.  This will save us a good deal of time as for duty of care purposes we need to account for the students who are 'booked in' for each session.

Many thanks.

From the Deputy Principal

I begin by commending our Year 12 Class of 2022 on their exemplary behaviour at last Friday night’s Formal, and more particulary for their spirit of joy in each other’s company.  It was a pleasure to be amongst them and see their anticipated event come to fruition.  Equally, it was wonderful to meet with so many parents and carers at the P&F Cocktail Evening - to reconnect and discover again our shared joy in being part of this community.

Students are hard at work as they complete assessments and assignments.  Hard work is ok.  Let’s not shy away from it.  There is learning in the learning itself.  Today I commenced my Year 9 English Speeches and was impressed by the realisation of a carefully considered thesis in response to a broader topic, supported by oracy skills and visual presentations to enhance their meaning.  Added to this was the class chat at the beginning of the lesson about how they were feeling in approaching the task, the dialogue shared as a cohort and the impact this has both positive and negative upon their perception of the task.  The capability to reflect upon oneself as a learner and appreciate how she has navigated challenge to perform is commendable.  For you as parents and carers, I encourage you at home to lean into this as you have much impact upon your daughter’s self-concept as a learner.  The genuine commendation they gave each other after each speech as recognition for learning growth was indeed what we aspire to at St Vincent’s College.

Please see the reminder at the top of the Bulletin to update your daughter’s details via the Edumate parent portal.  This must be done by Monday 21 March to enable our generation of emergency contacts and medical alerts to ensure your daughter’s safety at camps and retreats.  We must provide our camp/retreat providers with dietary requirements with sufficient notice so that students will be catered for.  If you have not already done so, your immediate attention to this is appreciated.

Year 9 parents and carers we are in the planning phase with an alternate provider given the circumstance of flood damage at Somerset.  We will be able to provide updated communication early next week.  When we do so we will very much appreciate your diligence in responding to the documentation required.

Deputy Principal

From the Director of Teaching and Learning and Education Administration

“Kind thoughts, kind words, kind deeds.”

Such hope-filled parental advice is relevant as much in our approach to learning as it is in our approach to our everyday lives.  Whilst kindness is not a value that is much talked about, or currently in vogue, it can be a powerful ingredient to hope-filled learning.  Kindness can be both the catalyst and fuel for change and epitomizes the notion of a small change making a significant difference.  Random and anonymous acts of kindness often carried out spontaneously, or in passing, can literally change lives.

Whilst kindness to oneself may not at first appear to align with rigour or resilience in our learning, actually a good supply of nurture is needed to keep efforts sustainable.  The expression ‘nourish to flourish’ is one that I use quite often with students and may take many forms including, proper amounts of sleep, hydration, time with friends and family and pursuit of sporting, cultural and other interests.  Kindness to one’s self extends to realistic expectations in learning to avoid unnecessary disappointment as well as patience to allow the learning journey to unfold.

The flow on effect of kindness to others in learning is more obvious and has great potential to be contagious.  Grasping the notion of learning in community best leads to an awareness and appreciation of the needs of those around us.  Working collaboratively is a vital skill in learning in the immediate, but is also identified as an essential component for success in future workplaces.  An element of kindness from an awareness of those we are learning with is a powerful glue to work successfully alongside others, as well as with others, in group work situations.

The collective kindness of a community such as ours also has the potential to create a secure environment for everyone to take risks in their learning with a little more confidence.  It is in taking the risks with the difficult parts of learning that the deep and long-lasting learning occurs in the struggle.  Knowing that our learning space is free of negative criticism and cynicism benefits everyone in the space and lives out the Gospel values on which our College was founded upon and continues to have its foundation.

Experiencing Wellbeing

The importance of Character, Connectedness, Perspective and Discernment, Physical Health and Sustainability and Optimism - the touchpoints of our program, play foundational roles upon which we can experience elevated wellbeing.

The Science of Wellbeing

It is with the greatest pleasure and humility that we can announce that St Vincent’s College has been selected to present our bespoke wellbeing program ‘Cura Personalis’, alongside our wellbeing structures and interventions at the 2022 European Conference of Positive Psychology (ECPP) in Reykjavik, Iceland.

It is with boundless gratitude that we acknowledge the historical and contemporary approaches to wellbeing at St Vincent’s College, our dedicated staff; Pastoral Leads, Heads of House, Tutors, College Counselling and Student Support Services, and most importantly our teachers…we owe them our deepest appreciation.

“The theme of the conference is ‘Creating a world we want to live in’…
The focus will be on positive society, and how we can apply the science of wellbeing throughout the life course, during the first years, in schools, workplaces and with older people, to create a better world. The conference program will include subjects such as happiness, flow, meaning, mindfulness and wellbeing in schools, at work, in media and in policies.”

At St Vincent’s we endeavour to make every day, a day to experience ‘wellbeing’.

Mr Mitchell Grace
Pastoral Dean of Students

From the Director of Faith and Mission

We have completed our Novena for Ukraine.  We have prayed each day for a different group of people and our final prayer on Monday was for Russian President, Vladimir Putin.  Praying for Putin has not felt right for some people; they don’t believe he deserves our prayers.  I guess he doesn’t, but he certainly needs them.  Sanctions, logic, pleas, justice and the cries of children have not changed him or diverted his intent.  Perhaps prayer is all there is left.  Luke's version of the Beatitudes tells us, “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”  It’s a challenge.

If you would like to spend some time praying with us, click on the links below.

We had a great day of Zooper Doopers today.  Of course it would have been perfect if I’d remembered to put the Zooper Doopers in the freezer earlier.  They were mostly frozen.  We are inhabiting the positive, so mostly frozen is still good.  The money raised will go to St Vincent de Paul’s flood relief drive.  We know that Vinnies' will use the money in really practical ways.  We had great music pumping on Caritas Christi to entertain our customers and get the troops dancing.  The songs were carefully selected numbers with an environmental awareness theme, to celebrate our first Friday of paper recycling.  I don’t know how Dancing Queen made it onto the playlist, but again, we are inhabiting the positive.

We have launched ‘House Keep-Cups’ for $8.50, and so far they are looking very popular.  Students are invited to preorder/purchase a Keep-Cup with the College logo and House colour band and lid.  They are really stylish!  They look very like the picture.

A Vinnies House Keep-Cup ensures a discount at Coffee Queens for all hot drinks and a discount on hot chocolate later in the year.  The small mark-up on the cups will go towards our environmental efforts.  Vinnie the Koala is still our responsibility and we will have a fundraiser later in the year to ensure his habitat remains safe.  He would approve of a Vinnies House Keep-Cup. He is yet to choose a colour.

Our paper recycling bins are full.  Thanks to all those students who volunteered to bring their bin to Caritas Christi this morning in Tutor time and thanks to the teachers who, along with calling the roll, organising the day, leading the prayer and ensuring their students are safe, happy and ready for the day, also had to remember to organise the recycling go out.  Our Environment group deeply appreciates your efforts, as does Pope Francis and the planet.

Monday is HARMONY DAY.  Students are invited to come along with a $2 coin or two, buy a tasting plate and learn about the lives of women from small communities on each of the five continents.  We will have dishes from Central Australia, Tanzania, Mexico, Belarus and India.  The small but gifted team of chefs will bring their dishes along on Monday morning, ready to be served at lunchtime.  Ken Devlin will, of course, be helping us set up our tables and BBQs.  I hope I don’t burn the pappadums.

Two students popped into St Mary’s Cathedral yesterday for the St Patrick’s Day Mass.  It was a great celebration.  Thanks to Mrs Edelle McCrudden for taking them.

Lenten Reflection morning continues next Tuesday with a contemplation of the gospel for the following Sunday, The Prodigal Son.  It will be a winner.  All students and staff are invited to join us in the Chapel at 8.00am.  We finish by 8.30am.  It’s really nice.  People find the most amazing things in the scriptures.  This week we looked at the parable of the fig tree that won’t fruit.  Jesus’ story is about second chances, about feeding and nourishing and hoping for the best.  I hadn’t realised before that the story was told in response to Pilot murdering a group of Galileans in the temple.  It was a savage attack.  Jesus is from Galilee.  Galileans are not considered very important people.  They are not quite up to speed socially, so the Judeans may not have been too fussed about the massacre.  But they were worried about the mess that disturbed their sacrifices in the temple.  It’s interesting that some things never change.  The suffering of some people seems more horrifying than the suffering of others.  I wish it didn’t.

Thanks, Vinnies' community, for supporting all our efforts to make our faith real and active - as St Ignatius would say.

Director of Faith and Mission

Year 11 Modern History Excursion to Sydney Jewish Museum

On Friday 4 March, our Year 11 Modern History class went on an excursion to the Sydney Jewish Museum in Darlinghurst.  The museum was founded by Holocaust survivors with the intent of informing people and keeping their stories alive.  For the first hour of the trip, we had the privilege of hearing firsthand the story of Litzi Lemberg, a Holocaust survivor who lived in Vienna at the start of the Second World War.  After Litzi had told us about her life, we were extremely lucky to have the chance to ask her questions about what she went through.  Many of us felt that this was the highlight of the experience, as it was a once-in-a-lifetime insight into this historical tragedy and enriched our learning of both this topic and history in general.  We were then led through the main exhibitions of the museum by three amazingly knowledgeable guides, who gave us great background information into all of the sources, including artefacts, informational videos, and written and oral accounts.  The section that stuck with us the most was the children’s memorial, where many artefacts and backstories of children who didn’t survive the Holocaust are displayed.  All in all the excursion had an emotional impact on every single one of us and was a highly valuable experience, not just in our History class, but in our holistic education and awareness of the world.

SVC College Production 2022 - Matilda!

Last week we commenced our rehearsal process on the Thursday afternoon.  We began by getting to know each other - drama games and some Matilda related improvisation to get everyone ready to work together and understand the value of ensemble work.  Then we started learning the first part of one of the main dances that has motifs that will be repeated in the show.  The auditions were amazing and now pose a much bigger job than ever with some big surprises - talent-wise!  So many amazing singers and actors.  This week we started singing together outside in the fresh air - some great moments and even harmonies already coming together.

All students are welcome to be a part of this show - they need a signed and returned permission note.  Students will need to return the permission note and commit to rehearsal dates and production dates.  The permission note is on Student Life in Google Classroom.  I look forward now that auditions are over and we have started dance and singing rehearsal, to starting scene work next week!  Our next rehearsal is next Thursday in the College Hall, commencing at 3.05pm sharp!

TERM 1 SPORT

ESTA Touch

This Saturday we will be playing the play-offs for touch.  Please make sure you check the website for any last minute changes due to the weather.  Last week there were many changes because of the weather and some students failed to turn up!  They let their team and the opposition down and Vinnies' do not like to do that.

All players are to be at their field 30 minutes before the scheduled start time to warm up before their game.  Good luck to all teams!

Santa Sabina Volleyball

Well done to the players who did the correct thing last Saturday and turned up at Santa Sabina to play volleyball.  It was very disappointing that we had to forfeit some games because some Year 12 girls did not turn up.  This is not acceptable and is not in the Vinnies' spirit.  Please make sure you are there this week.

IGSA Saturday and Tildesley Tennis

Congratulations to all girls who played tennis last Saturday.  We had some great improvements from all teams.  Please make sure you are at your training  sessions next week before camp and finals come up.

The prestigious Tildesley Tennis Shield was held at Pennant Hills on Sunday 13 and Monday 14 March, and all players did their best.  The weather stayed dry for us and it was lovely to see so many parents and Mrs Fry there to support our team.  Congratulations to Isabel Murray-Nobbs, who was our best placed player, reaching round 3 in the singles.  Congrats also to Evie Kelly who played some great tennis in the second round, narrowly missing out on the win!  (see more photos from Tildesley at the end of this article)

Water Polo

We have been lucky that most water polo teams have still had their matches on Saturday mornings as most are indoors.  It was great to see so many dads at the games last weekend again supporting their daughters in sport.

Please check the College website or the Sports noticeboard for training times and draws.  Water polo does usually still go ahead regardless of weather.  It may be cancelled only if there is lightning or a problem at the venue, for example, the Dawn Fraser Pool in Balmain is tidal and is often closed after lots of rain due to pollution.

Swim Sessions:  Jordan, one of our elite water polo coaches, concludes this term's swim sessions this week. Last chance to slot in your training sessions for this term on Tuesday 22 and Thursday 24 March - 7.15am-8.15am for any keen swimmers and water polo players.  All levels will be catered for - just turn up!

Fitness and Cross Country

Fitness training with Tash is on Monday, and is on every Monday and Wednesday afternoon as we prepare for the IGSA Cross Country Carnival at Frensham on Friday 13 May in Term 2.  We are allowed to enter up to ten competitors in each age group and this acts as the St Vincent’s Cross Country Championships, as first girl finished from each age group will be awarded our Age Champion.  We would like to have a minimum of three per age group for the relay point scores, so we are looking for more competitors.  12 and 13 years only run 3km, with all other girls doing 4km except 18 years who have to do 6km.

All levels of fitness will be catered for at the training sessions and are not just for those wanting to do cross country.  Any students wishing to improve their fitness are invited to come to one or both days.  Please email Ms Jacobs if you would like to sign up.  Students meet Tash outside the change rooms at 3.15pm.  If it is wet they will do a fitness session in the gym.

TERM 2/3 SPORT REGISTRATIONS

Registrations have now closed for Term 2/3 Sport.  Trials will be held over the next few weeks as we need to grade our teams for the IGSA competition.  Most sports are now full, although we do have a few spaces left in junior hockey and junior soccer - so any Year 7, Year 8 or Year 9 studentswho would like to join, please email Ms Jacobsjacobsj@stvincents.nsw.edu.au .  Please see the details below and put them in your diaries.

SPORTS STAR OF THE WEEK

Congratulations to Isabel Murray-Nobbs, Year 12, who played some great tennis at Tildesley last Sunday and made it through to the third round.  She has been a great role model to the younger tennis players over the past few years.

P&F Cocktail Party and P&F Art Show

P&F Cocktail Party

Thank you to all the parents and carers who attended the P&F Cocktail Party last Saturday night.  It was great to welcome all the new parents and to be back together as a community once again after so long.

A special thank you to the P&F committee for all their hard work to make it a fun and successful evening.

P&F Art Show

We are looking for volunteers to join the P&F Art Show committee to help bring the event to life and make it a success.  You don't have to be an art expert to join us, it's about teamwork, having fun and the good feeling you get for doing your part for a great cause.  Click here to register your interest.

If you have any questions and would like to have an insight or discussion, please contact Holly Davies on 0438 149 764.
