From the Principal, Mrs Anne Fry

Dear Parents and Carers

This week the Sisters of Charity have gathered together for their Congregational Chapter.  This has been a time of prayer, celebration and the discernment of their new Congregational Leader.  On behalf of the College community I offer our congratulations to Sr Loreen Dixon, who will be the next Leader of the Australian Sisters of Charity.  Sr Loreen Dixon is well known at the College as a former College Board Member, neighbour and Trustee of Mary Aikenhead Ministries.  We also acknowledge the wonderful leadership of Sr Clare Nolan during the last six years.  She indeed has been a great friend of the College.

One of the most anticipated weeks of the school year is approaching - that is of course Camps/Retreats week in Week 9 of Term 1.  It is with confidence and excitement that we look forward this year to these experiences after having to postpone or cancel them last year.  It is an enormous logistical exercise to facilitate six concurrent experiences, but it is a commitment we make each year because we believe in the great value these residential programs provide for each student.  The memories made and consolidated while away on school camps/retreat last for a long time and often shape the years ahead.  The independence, resilience and learning to manage challenge are all such important and laudable goals and there is something so very, very important about having fun!  I ask for your support as you encourage your daughter to participate in the camp/retreat program for 2021.  All venues will have their individual COVID-safe plans in place but the general principles of protection we are living with in the community will also be important to observe.  St Vincent's has an enviable location in so many ways, but one reality we have to contend with is the school was here before the first motor car!  On the day of departure and return there are some strategies that help prevent traffic gridlock.

  • If possible, have your daughter travel to and from the College using public transport.  Closely aligned to this is packing appropriately.  Your daughter will need to be able to carry her own luggage.  At some of the campsites this involves considerable distance; her departure and return may involve stairs.  It is not possible for parents to accompany their daughter to or from the bus so she must be independent with her luggage.

  • If it is not possible to use public transport please consider car-pooling.  The streets around the College are notoriously busy, narrow, and there are roadworks on Macleay Street.  If you can avoid being in the vicinity on those days you will be glad.  The police will assist with traffic management but prevention is the best solution to traffic chaos.

  • Punctuality is also critical.  The arrival time of the buses is staggered, and if a bus is held up by a student arriving late then that has a flow-on effect.

There is much hard work going into the preparation of the camps/retreats for this year, and I am certainly looking forward to participating in the Year 7 camp.  I am not sure I will be able to complete the "leap of faith" on camp, but the physical exhilaration and confidence the students gain from this activity is a good metaphor for many of the daily challenges in life.  This year I am sure I will again be inspired by their courage and envious of their flexibility!

Mrs Hunter has asked me to pass on her appreciation for all the well wishes and support.  Her husband will start a chemo and radiation protocol next week.  Please continue to keep this family in your prayers.

Congratulations to our Swimming Team who represented us with distinction last Tuesday placing a very close second to Monte Sant' Angelo College; and best wishes to our Tildesley Tennis Team who will compete in this prestigious tournament next week.

Yours sincerely

From the Deputy Principal

It always feels good to affirm the committed work of our staff who give so generously of themselves to the education and growth of our students.  Amongst our core business of designing effective learning experiences, the extra layer of collegial conversations to share strategies that respond to individual student learning and pastoral needs and the good humour and care that I witness in interactions when a teacher is on yard duty, or even playing a hit of tennis, or farewelling students at the school gates with the firm but fair expectation of remembering one’s school hat whilst wishing them all a good weekend.  This is what makes us community and people working in relationship with one another.  We continue to hold expectations of our students’ responsibilities in creating optimal learning opportunities by being prepared for classes and interacting with a generosity of spirit that actively chooses to engage and make the most of the opportunity to learn - for themselves and others.  Punctuality, completion of homework, bringing correct resources including sports and dance are all part of these active choices.  Learning and good relationships require the intentional good work of students as much as teachers and we appreciate the support and guidance you offer at home.

Teachers and students are now preparing for the upcoming Camps and Retreats (24-26 March).  This is a tremendous commitment of all of our teachers who leave their own families and comfortable beds to commit three days of experiential learning for our students.  We do this because we believe in the gain.  We position ourselves to know and support our students well.  Each student is accompanied by a St Vincent’s College teacher as their small group leader, and of course have opportunity to strengthen relationships with peers.  Camps and Retreats offer the opportunity for a young person to meet challenges and develop strategies that enable success with support and collaboration.  These are the moments that become the shared culture of the cohort as they will create memories that define who they are.  Please ensure you have returned all permission and medical forms as they are now outstanding.

I end with a prompt to parents and carers to continue to engage in conversations about the safety of young people within the context of their experience. We continue at school to engage the student voice in ways we may provide education and dialogue and support.  During the week, some senior students also shared their concerns regarding online behaviors and the too easy access to online dating sites.  This is likely a conversation that can be best entered into with your adolescent in the hypothetical - providing opportunity for you to discuss what you would perceive to be the dangers of a young person engaging in conversations on such a site.  By no means do I suggest this is common, but when our young people offer a heads up, its good to be informed and enable the conversation to educate and protect our children.  I offer here a couple of sites that may be of use to build your knowledge - https://sexeducationaustralia.com.au/

From the Director of Teaching and Learning

I always welcome the start of the cooler seasons.  They bring with them an opportunity to slow down from the busyness of the hotter, more festive seasons, to retreat to the warm comforts of a slower time of year where the family home becomes a haven of warmth and comfort.  The less-inviting weather brings opportunity for more time to retreat inward.  I love the quiet moments on the weekend; the reading of books, the marking of papers and the sharing of meals and stories around the dinner table.

With the change of seasons last week, so too came a ‘seasonal shift’ in our learning focus.  With learning well and truly entrenched in the SVC/NESA curriculum and class dynamics with teachers and students well established, the dust on the startup of the academic year has indeed settled.  As part of the privilege and responsibility teachers have ‘in knowing our students and how they learn’ (Australian Professional Standards for Teachers), so too is it imperative that we evidence our students’ learning as part of the teaching and learning cycle - not as the end point.  For our Years 8 to 12 students, ‘Assessment Season’ is well and truly underway.  Year 7 students remain engaged in formative assessment opportunities as we get to know our youngest students as learners.

As part of our flourishing learning culture, quality assessment practices and robust feedback are a central component of knowing each of our learners and nurturing their ability to achieve their fullest academic potential. Our school-wide learning intention this year is to ‘create and respond generously to opportunities to learn and grow’.  Assessment that is fair, yet challenging for students to demonstrate what they know (knowledge) and ‘how they know it’, (skills) enables us as teachers to guide ‘where students still need to grow’ their learning.  Each time an assessment activity is returned to students after marking, students will immediately engage in a reflective practice that demands they identify areas still needing consolidation and set realistic goals to achieve them.  The students thereby enter into a continuous cycle for ongoing feedback and consolidation of learning.  Academic success stems from the reciprocal and respectful partnership between teacher and student, as well as the hard work and commitment each learner needs to execute outside of the classroom.  Students should be in regular study routines at home that also include sports training, recreational pursuits, mindfulness and relaxation.  Balance is key to the longevity of study routines whilst enhancing adolescent wellbeing.  At SVC our Learning Framework is designed to empower this academic success by:

●   Informing each student of the outcomes they have achieved on each assessment activity

●   Transforming the students’ learning through concrete, skills-specific advice about how to improve on areas of weakness

●   Empowering our students to reflect on and action their teacher’s feedback to set their own goals.

To assist your daughters to prepare for their forthcoming assessment activities, please do check your emails for an edition from me on 19 February, via my assistant Ms Maxine Byrom.  Your daughter’s 2021 Assessment Handbook complete with their full 2021 Assessment Schedule detailing every formal 2021 Assessment Activity, the College’s Assessment Policy and specific advice about our Illness/Misadventure Policy are contained therein.
(For your convenience, the 2021 Assessment Handbooks links are also listed below).

Whilst this autumn weekend will be a seasonally atypical, I invite you to find a ‘cosy moment’ to enter into dialogue with your daughter about her forthcoming assessment activities, checking in on how she is preparing for them both academically and with good self-care over the three-week buffer between notification and assessment.

The Pony Tail Project is approaching.  I’m willing my hair to grow more quickly so we get some length for the chop.  It’s not complying.  Friday the 19 March is the day.  If you haven’t sponsored anyone yet, it’s not too late.  Click on the link and off you go.  It’s very easy.  Click on the link below.

I have heard that our book collection for St Canice’s Library has been very well received.  They have over 1,500 books - the new shelves are coming next week and their guests have let them know a few titles or categories that they would like to see on the shelves:

Natural remedies

Gardening

True Crime

Psychology

Biographies

Medical

History

Science

Mathematics

Comedy

Fantasy

To that end, we would be very happy to find a new home up at St Canice’s for any unwanted books from the above categories.  Send them into Reception and they will find their way to my office - and I can make a delivery.

Our mover and shaker, Tess McGrath, Year 10 Cahill House, has been invited to do a tour of the library when it is all ship shape.  Tess will report back on how our efforts have impacted this most worthwhile project.

Our Year 8 Language classes are involved in a fundraiser next week, raising money to sponsor students at the School of St Jude, Tanzania.  They are Spelling for Tanzania!  Our students learn a little about the student their efforts will be impacting, they get family and friends to sponsor their spell work, and it is success all around.  Learning sponsoring learning.  This is a really good initiative.  Sponsorship forms will find their way home to Year 8 families soon.  Ms Maria Manitta (Head of Department Languages) is making it happen.

The Charism Team have met this week and batted around ideas as to how best celebrate Holy Week.  It will be upon us very soon.  This will bring an end to Lent on Easter Sunday, and the yearly reflection on what this central story and event means for us in 2021.  Our theology has changed over the past 2,000 years.  Certainly, when the story of Jesus was first told by Paul in his letters, there was an emphasis on the resurrection experience.  It was about Jesus’ being real and present to Paul in a risen form, long after the dust had settled in Jerusalem.  Paul speaks of being completely accepted and loved by Jesus despite his failings and inadequacies.  For Paul, this way of feeling loved and being loved is so overwhelming that it is beyond the bounds of duty, the law and social expectation.  Paul is completely and utterly in love with the freedom from oppression he sees that Jesus offers.  And he knows he is loved back.

The Gospel writers all have a slightly different story to tell about the time we call Easter.  They use the stories of the Torah (The Old Testament) to inform the story of Jesus.  “The Temple veil tears in two” in Marks’ Gospel, suggesting the diving of the Red Sea in Exodus, showing the way to freedom.  Matthew’s gospel has Jesus die alone, calling out the great psalm, “My God, why have you forsaken me?” as his ancestors had done in the desert.  Luke has Jesus forgive his executioners because they don’t understand what they are doing, and John relies on the Prophet Isaiah to demonstrate that Jesus is the one we have all been waiting for:  Jesus says, “It is finished.”  Jesus' human life was certainly finished at that point, but the message was not, the work for justice was not and peace was far from being accomplished.

Now is a good time to reconsider what this event means in our lives.  Jesus dies at the hands of his enemies because he demands justice and love.  His saving effort is that he teaches us how to love and his resurrection is the hope we need to keep loving.  More on that later.

My question this week comes from Mark’s Gospel.  The temple veil, which is in front of the Ark of the Covenant, tears in two so that the Ark can be seen by everyone.  God is now available, visible, accessible to everyone because Jesus makes love visible.  What does love look like?  Like what Jesus does.  I’m going to think about how I can demonstrate love more clearly.

Lenten Challenge for this week:

Who am I keeping love from?

Where am I not being transparent in my efforts to be a better person?

Am I rejecting someone who needs my time, my attention, my help?

What’s on?

Years 11 and 12 have been invited to a series of Reflection afternoons - Mondays in March.

We will gather, have some afternoon tea, consider some good ideas from great philosophers and movers and shakers, share our own ideas and do some meditation and journaling.  It promises to be a worthwhile experience.

Monday 15 March - 3.15pm-5.00pm

Monday 22 March - 3.15pm-5.00pm.

It’s not too late for students to sign up.

Laundry

On International Women’s Day on Monday, each table during dinner time was given a book on a prominent woman in the world.  Each table was then asked to give a book review and explain why their woman was important to the world.  From Rosie’s story of Dolly Parton (in a Texan twang as well!) to Cyndell’s rendition of Maya Angelou’s life, to Grace’s explanation of who Vivienne Westwood is - there were ten stories of women who are/were strong, who pushed the boundaries and who left an everlasting impact on others lives.  This day is important for all women to realise that you don’t need to be an Anne Frank or a Coco Chanel or an Audrey Hepburn to have an impact, we need to be our best version of ourselves and be the best that we can be.

This weekend is our second 'In Weekend' of the term.  We have moved this one (which normally occurs in Week 9) because of the attendance at camps/retreats of our SVC students, tired Boarders never make for a fun weekend!  A reminder that our next In Weekend in Term 2 is in Week 7 (4-6 June). The long weekend is the weekend after (11-14 June), and we will be keeping the Boarding House open during that time because the term concludes on 18 June.

Following is a pic from Monday of the laundry from 40 Boarders.  Thought you’d appreciate how long it takes to unpack this laundry when it returns nice and clean…!

PASS Kayaking Report - From the PDHPE Department

In Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS) this term, our class has been lucky enough to participate in kayaking in the Harbour with Ozpaddle Sydney, located in Woolloomooloo.  Currently in PASS we have been learning about risk behaviours/environments, risk assessment, risk management and lifesaving skills, therefore, kayaking was a great activity for us to learn about and practise safety in water-sports.  Before paddling, we would all go through a risk assessment to identify the likelihood of possible risks occurring, as well as coming up with ways to minimise and manage these risks.  Some possibilities included falling off the kayak, hitting the rocks when entering the water, accidentally hitting someone with your paddle and, of course, getting eaten by a shark!

We were also taught paddling techniques by the fabulous instructor, Sophie, who helped us learn how to turn, reverse and 'raft up' whilst in the kayak.  Each session a few would paddle on single kayaks and others would paddle on doubles, which was very enjoyable.  After only one lesson with Sophie, we were given the opportunity to try and paddle on the narrower, faster kayaks which were quicker but a lot trickier to balance.  Over the duration of three lessons we paddled to many locations in Sydney Harbour including the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and The Royal Botanic Garden.  In addition, our class participated in a few kayaking races, as well as 'accidentally' falling off a few times.

Overall, it was an extremely fun and educational experience for our whole class.  Thank you to Sophie, Mrs Williams and Mr Bradley who came along with us!

SKI TRIP 2021 - Expressions of Interest

The College has for many years safely conducted an Alpine Ski Trip for students in Years 9, 10 and 11.  The trip has always been thoroughly enjoyed by students and staff who have participated, and greatly anticipated by younger students.

We are currently looking for expressions of interest in this five nights package that includes travel by coach, full-day ski lessons, lift tickets, ski hire and accommodation in a ski lodge with breakfasts and dinners.  The cost in the past has been under $2,000 dependent on the number of students joining the trip.

The dates this year will be from early Sunday 20 June and returning on Friday evening 25 June.  This takes place in the first week of the three week break between Semesters 1 and 2.

If you are keen to support your daughter‘s application, please send me an expression of interest to my email:  cartmerm@stvincents.nsw.edu.au .  Once we have a better understanding of numbers we will be in touch again if the ski trip for 2021 is viable.
