Dear Parents and Carers

I have always admired the humble cupcake for the enduring role they have played in my life.  I think they were the first thing I baked and my first experience of contributing something to a shared experience.  I probably left the kitchen covered in baking debris, but what I remember more was the joy (or the good acting) of my family.  That has continued over the years, and with their portability are often my 'turn to' contribution to a morning tea, picnic or other spontaneous moments of hospitality.  Over the years, I enjoyed seeing my own children enact the same rituals in the kitchen.  They have been powerful memories this week as the humble cupcake has been front and centre of student led activity.  Today was "Vinnies' Pride" day and cupcakes created the colours of the rainbow and the powerful messages of diversity and inclusivity.  The intake of food colouring would have been high, but the symbolism of colour is strong in the context of a rainbow.  A rainbow forms when light strikes (water).  It is a great metaphor that we need to let 'light' into our lives and into the darker places where fear, doubt and prejudice can hold us back from being, and allowing others to be their most authentic selves.  It has taken me too long to realise the truth that has underpinned many of the Pride activities in Sydney this month, including a Human Rights conference - Love who you are, choose who you love.

My other powerful cupcake revelation came through the post from a volunteer at St Canice's kitchen, where cupcakes made by our students are highly appreciated.  The love and care invested in each little morsel is so evident and carries so much more than a sugar hit.  I share with you this letter of appreciation:

"Dear Mrs Fry - What an amazing surprise to see myriad boxes of cupcakes arriving at the St Canice's coffee shop where I was serving last Thursday - dozens of them!!  I had only just been discussing with my fellow 'barista' how few buns and cakes we had that morning from leftovers from Baker's Delight.

We were thrilled to receive them, and I wanted to pass onto you, the whole school and particularly the 'cupcake bakers' how much our 'customers' loved them.  We displayed them on trays and each cake was specially chosen - some people took two.  They (the cupcakes) were pretty, funny, colourful, cheerful and delicious (I confess I even had one - I couldn't resist).  We were so proud to tell everyone that they were made by the girls from St Vincent's College.  I pass on the thanks from the over one hundred lovely people who enjoyed them.

Thank you girls, for your thoughtfulness and the care you took in their decoration.  You brought many smiles to many faces and many warm feelings of knowing you care for others less fortunate than yourselves.  What a great school to give your girls the opportunity to give back to their community."
"...PS:  The smiling faces on some cakes were wonderful - and so were the gluten free.  So thoughtful..."

When next someone asks you what you made or are making, let your answer resound "JUST cupcakes"!

From the Deputy Principal

It is a true privilege to witness students transform their aspiration into action.  Since the beginnings of Term 4 the 2022-2023 Student Leadership Team have spoken about their commitment to nurturing community with a focus on diversity and inclusivity.  And today was a defining moment in seeing these leaders shine as people of justice and joy.

As educators we reflect upon our purpose for education in the times in which we live and look for ways to see that realised in the context of our own communities.  Since 2021 the Gonski Institute for Education (GIE) (which sits within the Faculty of Arts, Design & Architecture at UNSW), is underpinned by a strategy focused on creativity, collaboration, and inclusion in order to solve real-life problems.  The GIE works across disciplines at the intersections of education with health, justice, social policy, business, and economics to address and advance educational equity.  Its interdisciplinary reach positions it uniquely to ask bold questions, challenge conventional thinking, and propose evidence-based solutions.  Their work is organised under three broad themes overseen by leading educational researchers:

  • Achieving educational excellence with equity at scale (focus: systems and policy)
  • Building education communities (focus: schools and their communities)
  • Realising every learner’s potential (focus: classrooms, learners and their families)

I have a particular interest in reading in the area of achieving educational excellence through the consideration of building education systems for equity and inclusion.  As educators we are asked to consider how we are creating environments and pedagogies for culturally responsive schooling.  It is vital that we create the space for authentic listening to enable this.  Our Ignatian spiritually invites us to see the goodness in all and to pause to listen, reflect and act upon the discernment that arises in this Ignatian way of proceeding.  Student voice informs us what matters to the young people we are educating and enables them to play a leadership role in being authentically responsive.

Our Year 12 Class of 2023 decided they would build upon Sydney’s current hosting of World Pride to advance their own Vinnies Pride.  They wanted a clear visual that signifies the celebration of inclusion whilst also generating an energy of joy felt when communities are at their best.

The Year 12 Student Leadership Team articulated their vision -

“Our purpose is to create a celebratory community event that recognises all diversity at Vinnies and today specifically celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community. We want to celebrate this diversity and part of what makes the Vinnies community so strong.  As a Year 12 cohort, we have discussed our role as leaders in nurturing an inclusive community, particularly as leaders of Justice.  The Year 12s in each House have brought in cakes decorated in their own House colours and put them all together to make an amazing rainbow, representing all of us.  As we look forward into the year, we hope that all members of our community can feel valued and affirmed for all of who we are - our gender diversity, our cultural diversity, our country and city diversity.  We hope the rainbow cakes are a visible symbol of our commitment to justice through inclusion.”

“Today was a celebration that felt so full of Vinnies spirit … to see all Year groups mingling together, dancing around the cupcake stall, culminating in a congo line with the junior students joining in - it made us feel so proud to have created such a palpable community spirt.  It really was a visible celebration of our diversity with a genuine care for each person within this community.  We are really, really proud”.
Lucy Fraser and Summer Robinson - College Co-Captains

I am certainly grateful for the vision and hope of our senior students.

Finally, I add a prompt to ask that you be as prompt as possible in returning your daughter’s Camp and Retreat permission letters, including updating Emergency contacts, medical details and dietary requirements on Edumate to enable the safe care of your daughter.  This includes the camp venue online medical and consent forms for Years 7, 8, 10.  This is the weekend to please attend to this - permission notes are due back at school this coming Tuesday 7 March.  We very much appreciate your support to enable our organisation in the care of your daughters.

From the Director of Teaching and Learning

Testing.  It can easily appear to dominate education as it is testing that is often picked up by the media where performance and league tables are easily reported and easily manipulated into sensational headlines. As a number of our cohorts are about to undertake testing of different forms over the coming weeks it is timely to put testing in its educational place.

One function of testing can be to offer us insights into ourselves.  This is the purpose of the Careers Testing that Year 10 will be completing on Tuesday 7 March.  It can seem quite early to be starting to think about careers; our Year 10 students have yet to reach Stage 6 and have several years of school ahead of them before they start to make choices that might direct them into different professions and vocations.  However, rather than narrow thinking this testing is designed to achieve the opposite and broaden the horizons of our students.

The tests will provide our Year 10 students with insights into their personal preferences for relating to others and responding to situations.  It captures the kinds of problems that they have strengths in solving and helps to identify the ways in which current attributes and skills might open up career opportunities that students have yet to consider.  It is the case that ‘we don’t know what we don’t know’ and this type of test is designed to reveal possibilities that we did not know existed.  It’s the starting point for thinking that will continue throughout Years 11 and 12, and most likely well beyond formal education given that we live in a world where careers are constantly evolving and where it’s now the norm to change careers multiple times during one’s working life.

Another function of testing can be diagnostic, offering insight into students, schools or states that are in need of supportive intervention.  This was the primary purpose of NAPLAN which is often lost in the media’s efforts to use it as a ranking tool.  Testing always needs to be about the student first and foremost - they are the ones undertaking the testing after all.  NAPLAN is tracking a student’s learning progress and growth across years and stages of learning.  Even then, NAPLAN offers us a fairly narrow view of learning progress.  It measures literacy and numeracy skills, which are significant, but are not the only skills that a student is gaining and developing at school.  Therefore we need to tread a careful line, acknowledging the value NAPLAN holds and asking our students to take the test seriously and complete it to the best of their abilities.  But we also want to ensure that it is recognised as one of many lenses through which we can learn about our students, and therefore ought not to be a source of anxiety or stress for our Year 7 and 9 students.

I trust that all our students in Years 7, 9 and 10 will constructively engage with these testing experiences so that the feedback they receive in the coming months is purposeful and offers helpful insight that might inform future steps on their learning journey.

Key notes for parents of  for Years 7 and 9 students:

  • Students will download the locked down browser to their devices on 7 March (Year 7) and 9 March (Year 9).  This is essential for each student to be able to access the tests.
  • Students will complete practice questions during class on 8 March (Year 7) and 9 March (Year 9) so they are familiar with the navigational functions of the platform and have had recent experience of the kinds of questions they will encounter.
  • Students start the NAPLAN tests on 15 March and need to arrive with a fully charged laptop and headphones.

From the Director of Faith and Mission

How we don’t all have a sugar headache, I do not know.  Our 'Pride Celebration' in cupcakes has just ended, and we have managed to celebrate who we are in vibrant colour.  For us at Vinnies', our celebration this week is certainly a celebration of diversity, but our celebration is firmly established in the understanding that all people are loved into being by God, all are unique and all are made in God’s image and likeness, able to love and be loved, worthy of love in its fullness.  According to John’s Gospel Jesus said, “I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full.”  All are afforded the dignity of living in fullness, knowing themselves - who they are and who they are called to become.  Imagine if we could all be the very best of ourselves, if our gifts and uniqueness could be fully lived, fully realised and fully appreciated.  What could our world be?  If women had not been limited and belittled, beaten and denied for the past few thousand years, and all that giftedness and brain power and creativity and brilliance had been allowed to flourish, what could our world look like today?  What diseases could be cured, what injustices could be an historical study, rather than a daily experience?  Imagine if our LGBTQI+ community had always been accepted and embraced and celebrated as equally loved and desired by God, what wonders could our society behold, what joy could be deeply felt in waves across our world.  I'm just wondering.

Night Patrol:  We have a proposal - and I want to flag it with you.  The Saturday night shift needs a team.  We are thinking we could cover it with a team of Dads and Daughters.  It might mean two Saturday nights in the year for a Dad and his daughter in Year 11 or 12.  It is a fantastic thing to do together.  Have a think about it and when it comes to signing up to a roster, we will be ready to go.  It’s easy and there are lots of people who will show you the ropes.  I love it.  It might involve some sandwich making as well, but that won’t be onerous.  I am confident that our great Vinnies' Dads and their daughters could make a real difference to the growing numbers of homeless and those really struggling in Sydney.
Save the Date:  Saturday 18 March, 4.00pm-6.00pm…Dads and Daughters.  The Fathering Project has an offer that you will not be able to refuse.  More information to come.  It will be a winner.

The Sandwich Project is going well.  I received some very generous Woolies vouchers this week, AND, one Mum told me the story of her daughter who has just got her first job.  She is going to put a proportion of her weekly wage towards a Woolies voucher to feed the homeless, and her parents are going to supplement it.  I was really moved by that.  That’s loving creativity.  Thank you!  If you or your family would like to ‘fund a filling’ just email me a Woolies voucher kenderesj@stvincents.nsw.edu.au or have your daughter drop in a gift card.  I promise I will put the funds to good use.  We are making 180 sandwiches now for Night Patrol, and that costs about $150 each fortnight.

I delivered 150 wet-packs to Matt Talbot on Thursday.  They were so appreciative.  If you’d like to contribute, just by a ticket on Humanitix    https://events.humanitix.com/copy-of-matt-talbot-wet-pack-support-2023 .  A $10 ticket will supply enough funds for two wet-packs - each one has tissues, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion, cotton buds, hand sanitizer, a comb, toothbrush, toothpaste and of course a razor, all in a ziplock bag.  Our Matt Talbot volunteers put them together every week.

From the HSIE Department: Year 11 Ancient History

Did the Trojan War really happen? This question has fascinated historians for years since Heinrich Schliemann’s early excavations at Hissalik, Turkey, in the late 19th century.  Our Year 11 Ancient Historians have spent four weeks familiarising themselves with Homer’s Iliad, the excavations in Turkey over one hundred and fifty and various other historical sources, mostly in fragmentary form, before constructing their hypothesis to the question.  The students embraced the Troy Fact or Fiction activity well and displayed excellent historical skills in creating their presentations.

Co-Curricular Performing Arts

This Week in Jazz Band

Vinnies' is getting Jazzy!! (again...)

As of 2023 St Vincent’s College has officially recommenced Jazz Band!  However, you may be aware that this is certainly not the first Jazz Band we have had. Unfortunately, due to the influence of the pandemic, Jazz Band came to a premature end.  With some of my fondest memories in the SVC Performing Arts realm being Jazz Band, I was determined to revive the life of jazz at St Vincent's... and .... (drum roll please, no pun intended) - it worked!

We are incredibly lucky to have such sensational musicians in our student body and beyond dedicated Performing Arts staff who have reshaped the group, reintroducing Jazz to the College and replenishing aspects of 'life lost' in Covid.  We rehearse every Tuesday and explore different pieces, developing personal and ensemble skills which are so important to develop, to replenish some long-lasting lockdown effects and continue the tradition of Jazz.  We hope to be performing some very fun, jazzy tunes we all know and love, reminding us of the love of music at Vinnies’ - especially a love of Jazz.
