SVC Parents and Friends Cocktail Party - Saturday 18 February 2023

Dear Parents and Carers

As the first full week of the new year comes to an end it is with appreciation that I note the extraordinary efforts our students and staff have made to ensure the year started as we intend to continue!  The focus on Justice as a Value has already provided us with a wonderful scaffold upon which to build our goals for the year.  Our first commitment is to be Just in our practices, habits and attitudes.  As a learning community we will focus on "just learning" and what the responsibility is upon each learner - to be ethical, to be prepared, to be punctual, to be considerate of the rights and opinions of others, to have the resources required, to respectfully engage with teachers and to equitably share common learning spaces.  "Just learning" will help us enhance the already positive and unique learning culture of St Vincent's College.  While the prime focus will be in our learning culture, we will throughout the year often add the descriptor of "just" to the role of friend, team member, leader, Teacher, Principal... It will be a very aspirational value but one I know our students and staff are ready to embrace.

It has been great to have seen so many of you in this first week at our information afternoon/evenings.  We considered it very important to have these in situ rather than online as there were new staff to introduce, new roles and new initiatives to introduce.  Thank you to those who were able to attend and make our new staff feel so welcome.

Tonight our Year 12 students will walk the red carpet to their Year 12 Formal.  They are excited and so are we to provide them with this opportunity to start their last year of secondary schooling in such a celebratory manner.  I am very confident they will have the time of their lives!

Yours sincerely

Mrs Anne Fry
Principal

From the Deputy Principal

Has it only been a week?  I say this with delight and admiration for all that has taken place in our start to the 2023 year at St Vincent’s College.  The reward of seeing the school fill with the chatter of students and staff – reconnecting and embracing new beginnings makes the work of dreaming and planning so very worthwhile.  I add my welcome to new and returning students, families and staff.  I hope that you all find our community one where you feel of value and where you will continue to grow in the partnership of educating young women in knowledge and faith.  Just today I listened to my Year 7 Cahill Tutor group sharing a prayer of gratitude for those people and circumstances who have enabled them the opportunity and support as they start their journey at St Vincent’s.  And not long afterwards I watched the happy faces of Year 12 students anticipating this evening’s Formal as a way of celebrating the start to their final year together.  These are moments to savour for students, parents and carers and educators and highlight that community is at the heart of our interactions together.

At St Vincent’s we wish to nurture what we know is valued and working well whilst also strengthening the supports we provide our students.  2023 sees the consolidation of our vision for the pastoral and academic care of our students after much discernment and appointments that have provided our students, staff and parents confidence and hope this past week.  Our Parent Welcome Information Evenings on Tuesday and Wednesday offered the opportunity to meet Mr David Woolbank, stepping into the role of Dean of Middle Secondary School, and Ms Samantha Newbond joining the College in the role of Dean of Senior Secondary School, now joining Mrs Sheenagh Doran in her second year as Dean of Early Secondary School.  We are excited to offer the role of Dean to better support the evolving developmental stages of adolescence and schooling.  They each bring passion and experience suited to the students within the particular stage of schooling in their care.  The dialogue this adds to strengthen our teachers in knowing and nurturing student growth has been well received by staff and students have certainly offered a warm welcome.  The PDF of the presentations from our Parent Welcome Information Evenings have been sent to parents and carers of Years 9, 10 and 11 today.

Our vertical House and Tutor structure will be retained as the much-cherished heart of our community experience for our students and teachers.  In 2023 the focus for Heads of House will be leading Tutor teachers to proactively nurture an environment in which each student is known, valued and supported to grow her strengths and develop strategies to regulate wellbeing within a climate of positive relationships (Aikenhead – Ms Tanya Schneider; Cahill – Ms Siobhan Devaney; Cater – Mrs Edelle McCrudden; De Lacy – Ms Simone Lock; O’Brien House – Mrs Silk Burke; Williams House – Dr Kirsty Soles).  In both our horizontal and vertical structure of support, your daughter’s Tutor teacher remains a key point of communication between home and school.

All students received a College Diary upon her return to school.  To ensure you and your daughter are familiar with College Policies and Procedures, parents and carers are asked to please read this information and sign page 38.  Students have been asked to have this completed by next week to be checked by their Tutor teacher.  Parents and carers of Years 11 and 12, please ensure you have read the email sent from Ms Michelle Smith sent earlier in the week, and signed your daughter’s Application for Leave if she has Study lessons.

This afternoon, a letter has been sent to the parents and carers of Years 10, 11 and 12 students outlining the topics of the workshops that will be presented by Paul Dillon this coming Monday 6 February.  Our curriculum extends to our partnership with you in the wellbeing of your daughter as we provide opportunities to educate our students in the healthy choices they make for themselves and in the care of their peers.  Paul’s workshops focus on:

Year 10 – ‘Young people, alcohol and risk taking: Looking after your mates’

Year 11 – ‘Alcohol and cannabis: What if something goes wrong?’

Year 12 – ‘Last year at school: What do I need to know about alcohol and other drugs?’

Paul’s presentations are very affirming of the positive choices made by young people which enable positive conversations and consequent impact upon adolescent behaviours.  Parents and carers across all years, you may be interested in Paul’s resources - Fact Sheets on topics raised during the presentations:  http://darta.net.au/factsheetsparents/ and Paul’s blog for parents is also a great resource:  http://doingdrugs-darta.blogspot.com/ .  I thank the College P&F for their continued commitment to supporting this education.

My very best wishes to you and your families for 2023.

Mrs Elizabeth Brooks
Deputy Principal

From the Director of Teaching and Learning

It has been a great pleasure to have joined the St Vincent’s College community as we embark on 2023.  After spending some time most recently at an Independent boys school, I am thrilled to be returning to girls education with a renewed commitment to the learning that supports young girls to develop into self-assured, knowledgeable and capable women of the future.  I have already been struck by the distinctiveness of the St Vincent’s community in its warmth and strong collaborative relationships.

These characteristics are powerful as learning is a relational endeavour.  The start of the year is a time to reestablish existing relationships, and to forge new learning relationships with teachers and peers across all classes.

These relationships may require time to develop.  I know that my colleagues and I are designing lessons that will enable them to get to know the learning strengths and needs of each student in our classes so that we can be responsive to the interests, abilities and skills of the diverse group of learners we have been entrusted with.  As relationships are reciprocal, the coming weeks are also a time for each student to intentionally engage in class, to keep an open mind about the subject and content and to step into the academic challenges that they are presented with.  They are encouraged to speak to their teachers, discuss their learning preferences and ask questions as they encounter unfamiliar concepts and content.  It is this interaction that will be foundational for a year of academic development.

I would like to add my congratulations to the class of 2022 whose results have been received with celebration.  They speak to a cohort who has been tenacious, focused and committed to challenging their thinking and their skills in the pursuit of learning.  The College’s publications have highlighted the successes of students who achieved State rankings or made it on to the distinguished achievers or All Rounder lists.  These are significant achievements and serve as a model of what St Vincent’s College students can achieve when faced with the rigour of the HSC credential.

However, these are not the only stories worth celebrating and I would like to also acknowledge the stories of students who persevered amidst personal and/or academic challenges, the students who were determined to master subject areas that may not have been their passion and the students who surpassed their own expectations and conceptions of their capacity.  These are also valuable stories because they speak to the ability of every learner to achieve growth in their academic pursuits.

As I explained to Year 11 and Year 12 during their opening assembly on Monday, growth is what learning and education is all about.  It is my hope and expectation that each student is able to look back at the end of the year and see that their effort and engagement with their learning programme has manifested in a growth of knowledge, understanding and skills.

From the Director of Faith and Mission

It feels like we’ve been doing 2023 for months already; so much has been achieved.  But before we move on completely, I want you to know how successful our hamper drive was at the end of last term.  We received this letter a few weeks ago.  Go Vinnies'!

It’s good to know that we are actually making a difference in people’s lives.  I can’t imagine what it would be like to try to set-up house on your own, with no support.  So thanks, Vinnies'.

This week I popped a few rosters on the Student Life Classroom to get going for the year.  The Cupcake roster filled to capacity in five minutes.  The Sandwich Project roster took about an hour to fill up and the Night Patrol roster was full before I blinked.  In true St Vincent's style, I received a number of emails from girls who were bitterly disappointed that there were no spots left.  Every email was a delight to read for its sense of kindness and compassion, but also slightly terrifying.  What do I do?  I have found us a few extra nights on Night Patrol because some other groups have dropped out.  I’ll open those up to girls who missed out in the first round.  That will work.  The thing to remember about Night Patrol is that at least two staff accompany the girls each time.  They are so generous.  It’s a late night and staff are happy to serve and then front up to work the next day with a spring in their step and great care for your daughters.  It’s a good place to be.

Coffee Queens kicked off again this morning in the Atrium.  What a hoot!  We have introduced iced chocolate to our summer menu.  It’s very decadent with whipped cream on top.  Our latest recruits did an amazing job.  It was our busiest morning ever.  It’s great coffee.

We had our first Environment Club meeting on Thursday under the guidance of Astrid.. What a turnout!  Look at the photo…

We plan to further our recycling program with more negotiations in the pipeline and bins waiting to be ordered.  Other plans include e-waste recycling and battery recycling.

We also want to do a deep dive into the data around how much electricity we use each day and how much of that is offset by our solar panels.  It’s a great question, Lucy Fraser.  We will get the answer and see where it takes us.  Knowledge is power, and our knowledge enlivens our faith in the possibility of a more just world and a deeper reverence for creation.  Scientia cum Religione.

“Trees are people”.

I leave you with some snaps from Coffee Queens this morning.  To appreciate them fully you need to listen to KC and the Sunshine Band, “That’s the Way I Like It”.

Starting our High School Journey at St Vincent's

As our first week of schooling draws to a close, we acknowledge our newest community members, the Year 7 students, who have embraced high school with true spirit, learning quickly and experiencing first hand what makes us who we are here at St Vincent’s College.  The girls have taken on every challenge and in many ways when I see them sitting together at recess, some could even be convinced that they have been here for quite some time!  There has been great chatter and excitement about the many opportunities to be involved in community, academic and co-curricular programs.  Teachers have commented on the number of girls trying out for dance, debating, sports, ensembles and choirs…they are definitely a year group that are not afraid to get involved, which will undoubtedly see them connected to each other and our school in no time at all.

As a key part of their transition to high school, Year 7 students are learning and establishing habits around organisation that will support them as challenges and responsibility increase.  Use of the College Diary, timely morning arrival to commence their day (around 8:20am or before is ideal) and mindfully preparing for learning success (packing bags the night before, reading emails and daily messages on the Student Life Google Classroom) all assist with positive emotions and a calm sense of being as the new day commences.

Our Year 7 Tutor team along with class teachers, extended staff and students are looking forward to working with them, in partnership with you, to make the most of their time at St Vincent’s College.

I feel incredibly grateful as I walk alongside them in this journey each day.

Mrs Sheenagh Doran
Dean of Early Secondary

Co-Curricular 2023

Co-Curricular Performing Arts and Public Speaking

Welcome back!  We are excited to be starting our co-curricular lessons and ensembles next week.  Please see below our ensemble timetable and important information regarding upcoming activities.  Any student who is having individual lessons will be contacted directly from their tutor.

Each ensemble will have its own Google Classroom so students should refer to this and 'Student Admin notices' for information specific to their ensemble.

Students who have not yet registered but would like to participate can register via the College website at:  https://www.stvincents.nsw.edu.au/learning/co-curricular-activities/

PUBLIC SPEAKING

The College has entered the Catholic Schools’ Public Speaking Competition this year.

This is a knock-out style competition held over three Friday nights in March - 3, 10 and 17.  The venue for each round could be any Catholic school in Sydney.  This is the largest public speaking competition in Sydney and draws contestants from just under one hundred schools.  Students compete in their own Year group.

Unfortunately, the College is only able to enter two students in each Year group.  This should not dissuade students from trying out for the competition. Information about trials will be given to students through Student Admin notices in Week 2.

This is a wonderful opportunity for students to formulate ideas and consider issues that matter to them as individuals and present these ideas in a broad forum giving voice to what matters in 2023.

If you have any questions regarding co-curricular activities, please email peoplesb@stvincents.nsw.edu.au

Risk Warning

(Under Section 5M of Civil Liability Act 2002)

On Behalf of St Vincent’s College and IGSA:

Sporting Activities 2023

St Vincent’s College organises many individual and team sporting activities during the course of a year.  Some of these are organised in conjunction with IGSA Sport, a sub-committee of the Association of Heads of Independent Girls' Schools NSW (AHIGS), now trading as IGSA.  Students participating in these sporting activities take part in practice and in competitions.

St Vincent’s Collegeand IGSA Sport expect students to take responsibility for their own safety by wearing compulsory safety equipment, by thinking carefully about the use of safety equipment that is highly recommended and by behaving in a safe and responsible manner towards team members, opponents, spectators, officials, property and grounds.

St Vincent’s College and IGSA Sport also expect parents, spectators and other participants to behave in a safe and responsible manner, to comply with the Codes of Conduct and to set a good example for the girls.

While St Vincent’s College and IGSA Sport take measures to make the sporting activities as safe as reasonably possible for participants, there is a risk that students can be injured and suffer loss (including financial loss) and damage as a result of their participation in these sporting activities, whether at training or in actual events.

Such injury can occur while the student is engaging in or watching a sporting activity, or travelling to and from the event.  The injury may result from a student's actions, the actions of others, the state of the premises or equipment failure.

On some occasions, an injury can be serious (such as torn ligaments, dislocations, back injuries, concussion or broken bones).  In very rare cases an injury can be life threatening or result in permanent disability.  If a student has a pre-existing injury, participating in a sporting activity could result in an exacerbation of that injury.

Students could also suffer loss as a result of their personal property being lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed.
