Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers

The semester has ended and there is a palpable sense of excitement at the prospect of the three week break.  This winter holiday will give some families the opportunity to chase the sun in northern places; for others the chance to discover the delights of Sydney and surrounds and for our senior students, a chance to consolidate their preparation for their upcoming HSC Trials.  Wherever and whatever your plans, the real value will be found in the whoever you are sharing the experience with this holiday.  I hope for every family this is time to enjoy good company and good times.

The last week of the semester has been characteristically busy.  The Years 11 and 12 students were invited last evening to spend time in informal mentoring with ex-students of the College from a broad range of professions.  This event was an initiative of the Year 12 SRC, and was facilitated by Mrs Jane Palin from the College Advancement team.  The evening was enjoyable and helpful to our senior girls as they begin to think seriously about their transition from secondary to tertiary and beyond.  Agility and creativity featured broadly in the conversation.  (Please see a photo from the evening at the beginning of this issue).

The Boarding students had a busy week of packing up after the first semester of the year.  They also provided magnificent hospitality to a group of Year 6 students from a Catholic primary school in Warrnambool, Victoria.  The students were enroute to Dubbo after winning a competition to interact with a drought affected primary school.  They had several unexpected changes to their itinerary but they coped exceptionally well, and the Boarding community were outstanding in their fexibility and hospitality.  A special thanks to Ms O'Donoghue and Ms Linda McCabe.

Our last assembly was our chance to say goodbye to some cherished staff and students leaving the College.  We said our best wishes Ms Mariann Barkho, leaving to have her baby at the end of July, Mrs Penny Radford leaving to take a term of long service leave, Ms Jacquie Hilmer, who has finished her temporary contract and Mr Joseph Hekeik, leaving on the staff scholarship to study the role of the United Nations in promoting Human Rights.

I also want to acknowledge Ms Rachel McLean, who has today shared the news that she is going to take up full-time study in 2020.  Ms McLean in her role as Director of Faith and Mission, has been pivotal in so many aspects of school life.  Ms McLean has been at St Vincent's College ten years and has served in a variety of substantive and acting leadership roles including Acting Principal.  We will commence our recruitment process early next term.

Happy holidays.  I would like to thank Mrs Joanne Anderson, for stepping into the position of Director of Pastoral Care in Term 2.  She has done a fantastic job.  We will welcome Mrs Brooks back in Term 3.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Anne Fry
Principal

Boarder Lines

On Sunday 23 June the Boarders' went to 'Broadway'! It was my first time going to Broadway, so I had no clue what to expect!  When we arrived we realised we had the whole theatre to ourselves!  We quickly got popcorn and drinks, reclined our chairs and got ready for the movie!  We watched Toy Story 4 and it was such a throwback to my childhood.  I had the best time!!

Zara McPherson, Year 10, Wagga Wagga

On Saturday the Boarding House participated in cooking with a Boarder parent, Ms Terrie Bell (Tamarla in Year 12's mother).  We were ready by 9:00am on Saturday to immerse ourselves in cooking, and to learn how to cook homemade chicken soup and fried bread.

We learnt how to create our own broth, cutting up our own vegetables and then making the soup.  Whilst making the bread we were taught how to cook it to perfection, and we made sure to try some before handing it out amongst all the Boarders.

With Ms Bell's help, we learned a new skill and we did something that is not in our usual routine.  Cooking a new dish and serving it amongst the Boarding House is not something we would normally do, as our meals are normally pre-made for us.  I think we can all say this Boarders' IN Weekend was an experience and we all really enjoyed it

Dakota Macourt, Year 9, Nambucca Heads

On Friday evening the Boarders' and Boarding staff along with Ms Mclean and Mrs McDonnell, travelled to North Sydney Oval to watch the Women's State of Origin.  The excitement and energy coming from the girls was ecstatic, everyone was keen to get into the oval and sit down and watch a bit of women’s footy.  After the NSW women came away with the win, a few Boarders stayed back with Ms O'Donoghue to run onto the field and interact and get photos with the players.  Overall, the girls enjoyed their night and had a lot of fun.

Clare Lienesch, Year 10, Bourke

The BRC have a Food Forum meeting with Selina, our head chef, every fortnight.  At the most recent meeting the committee decided to put on a BBQ on Tuesday night and 70 steaks were cooked.  Thank you to Isabella Quinn, Amy Lienesch, Rosie Secombe, Matilda Roddy, Alex Barclay, Tyler Leahy and Clare McGrath, who helped cook an amazing meal. And, to our maintenance team who set up a lovely pergola to keep us dry while we cooked.

Over the holiday period, we are encouraging Boarders to source and bring back reusable cutlery that can be used throughout the week for hot lunches, to cut back on the single-use plastic cutlery currently in circulation.

The Boarding coordinators and I hope that you all have a safe and enjoyable three week holiday and look forward to seeing the Vinnies Boarders' return from 4.00pm Monday 22 July and SCEGGS Boarders on Tuesday 23 July.

Yours in Boarding

Ms Maryanne O'Donoghue
Director of Boarding

From the English Department

The English Department has celebrated the opening of the Heritage Centre by taking our Year 11 Standard classes to review the interactive elements of the displays.

In Term 2, Year 11 Standard have been studying a unit called Contemporary Possibilities in which students have been developing a vocabulary to appreciate, describe, analyse and evaluate the ways in which digital texts tell stories.  Students presented screencasts in which they argued for the relevance and value of a variety of interactive digital texts such as interactive documentaries, digital graphic novels and games.

At the conclusion of our unit, students visited the Heritage Centre to examine the way in which the display uses interactive technologies to tell the stories of real people and their real experiences from the Sisters’ real social justice work.

This year’s students were confident enough to prepare worksheets for use by students next year!  So, be prepared Year 10!

Thank you to Ms Playoust and Ms Rune for taking their students to the Heritage Centre.

Year 10 PASS

This term in Year 10 PASS, we have been exploring the different body systems, their roles, structure and basic contribution to efficient movement.  The systems that we have been studying include the skeletal, muscular, respiratory, cardiovascular and energy systems.  As PASS is a partially practical subject, we were given the opportunity to participate in sports aerobics to increase our understanding of how our body systems work during movement.  We were instructed by Ms Joelle Maguire, who generously gave her time to teach us the basic skills of this sport.  We then divided into groups of four or five students and devised our own patterns and formations for the previously learnt Level 3 routine.  In the final performance session, the girls dressed up in costumes and performed to the Dance students.  We then worked together to learn another dance aerobic routine.  It was a highly enjoyable experience that gave us a real hands-on experience of how our aerobic energy system is used.

By Lucia Holt, Year 10 PASS

Year 9 PASS

In Year 9 PASS, our Term 2 topic was Enhancing Performance.  To complement this unit of work our class participated in four weeks of golf tuition led by Laura from the Jack Newton Junior Golf Academy.  We learnt a variety of stroke techniques, with a strong focus on enhancing our skills through video analysis.  As a result of this, we were then able to critique our own and others performances and make significant improvements to our technique.  The four-week program was highly influential, as we learnt a wide range of skills and tactics through different types of golf based activities.  All of us enjoyed this experience and we highly recommend it for other girls interested in choosing PASS in the upcoming years.  Quite a few students in the class have now taken up golf as a leisure sport.  Perhaps one of us will replicate the recent success of Hannah Green in the future!  Thanks again to Ms Whiley for organising this opportunity for us!

From the Languages Department

Wonderful news to end the term with our fantastic results in the NSW Language Perfect Championships.  Students competed for seven days answering questions on vocabulary, grammar and culture in a range of languages, but with a main focus on French and Italian.  The girls competed with great enthusiasm in class, at home, at lunch times and right up until the last second of the competition!  Special mention must go to Carla Rizzi-Kelly and Ornella Fox, who both achieved the Elite Award, which is the highest category earning over 10,000 points during the competition.

Our College rankings and scores:

-        1st in Italian in NSW

-        12th in French in NSW

-        5th overall out of 294 schools in NSW.

-        Ornella Fox ranked 26th in NSW overall for all languages

-        Alexandra Manuel ranked 39th in NSW overall for all languages

-        Grace Gallard ranked 43rd in NSW overall for all languages.

We had eight students ranked in the top 20 for Italian:

-        1st in NSW for Italian, Carla Rizzi-Kelly

-        2nd in NSW for Italian, Ornella Fox

-        4th in NSW for Italian, Cleo Heywood

-        5th in NSW for Italian, Alexandra Manuel

-        7th in NSW for Italian, Bronte Murphy

-        8th in NSW for Italian, Stella Trevaskis

-        10th in NSW for Italian, Grace Gallard

From the Director of Pastoral Care

As the College prepares to head off for a very well-deserved winter holiday break, we wish the girls relaxation and a different pace of learning and activity in their holiday time.

The Pastoral CP programs have run extremely well this term, most notably with several incursions for our senior students.  Year 11 have contemplated an Ignatian approach to Leadership, and they are currently in a period of discernment as a cohort to work to elect their peers into the Leadership positions of 2019-2020.

As Year 12 prepare to embrace tertiary opportunities and a full life beyond the College, we welcomed this week a presentation from Senior Constable Martin.  From her experience, she is able to communicate with expertise and compassion, the rights of young adults and the array of professional support that is available.  Some of the topics that may arise include social media, assault and process of reporting, drug possession and mobile testing, ‘schoolies' and concerts’ procedures - rights and support, fake licences, making a statement and the Young Offenders Act.  This list is not exhaustive, and it is an informative yet relaxed Q and A session where students may wish to ask questions afterwards in the lunchtime that follows.  Our pastoral staff are there to assist along with our College counsellor, Ms Sophia de Prendegast.

As we look to Term 3, please do ensure that blazers are dry cleaned, uniform is adjusted and hem lengths are appropriate.  This is especially important for the Year 12 girls planning to Graduate in style.  A reminder please that chewing gum is not permitted on College premises.

We thank and bid a brief farewell to two members of our pastoral team.  Ms Mariann Barkho has ably led Cahill House this term, and we wish her, and her husband the most joy as they look forward to the arrival of their first child.  Bon courage!  Mrs Penny Radford of O’Brien House is taking Long Service Leave, and as an experienced scientific globetrotter, her travel plans are superb.  Bon voyage!  Ms Kate Parish is welcomed back in to reprise the Head of House role, and will lead O’Brien House.  I return to Head of Cahill House as Mrs Elizabeth Brooks returns in Term 3 from her Long Service Leave.  Welcome back Mrs Brooks!

Director of Pastoral Care

ST CATHERINE’S  NETBALL COMPETITION

Congratulations to SVC 6 (Junior 1), SVC 9 (Junior 4) and SVC 12 (Junior 7), who all made the Grand Finals this week as well as SVC 11, who played off for third place.  WELL DONE EVERYONE!  Pocket authorities will be allocated to SVC 9 for winning their division in the St Catherine's competition.  The notification will be entered onto students' Edumate accounts and the pocket authorities are put on blazers towards the end of the year.

It has been a successful season at St Catherine’s on Wednesdays.  This is not because of winning games, but because of the big hearts that our girls display with respect to their coaches, each other and the opposing teams. That’s what makes SVC girls very special.  A special thanks to parents and Boarding co-ordinators who drove Boarding students back to Potts Point after the games.  SVC Sport cannot function without your generosity.

We had about 100 fathers and daughters participate last year in what was a great night and raised over $1,200 for Charity.  We are hoping to double that this year and we are planning to make it even better.  For those who might like to support the organisation of the event, please contact:

Seeking Volunteer Readers/Scribes for the HSC Examinations - Learning Support

Are you willing and able to help us to help our Year 12 HSC students?

In the Diverse Learning Department we have a number of Year 12 students requiring Disability Provisions for their HSC examinations in October/November 2019.  HSC examination provisions are granted by NESA after a complex application process.

We are seeking a number of volunteers to assist as readers and/or scribes for the HSC examinations.  Volunteers would need to have a Working With Children Check, and cannot be the parent of a Year 12/2019 HSC student.

Our students really appreciate having an adult rather than a fellow student as their reader/scribe.  If you, or anyone you know, would be willing to help us in this endeavour, please contact Ms Alanna Rose rosea@stvincents.nsw.edu.au

News from the College Caterers - Catering Industries

We are purchasing new ENVIROMENTALLY FRIENDLY CUTLERY for the canteen (starched based cutlery).  From next term the girls will need to buy this cutlery with their food for 20 cents whether it is a knife/fork or spoon.

Also, we will be starting a 'Bain Marie' with hot food to sell instead of using a lot of plastic containers.  There will be a token involved with purchase and then the students pick up the food around the outside of the canteen, making it more efficient service inside the canteen to get in and out.
